Stainless Steel Sheet for Automotive Exhaust & Railway Wagons

Jindal Stainless makes stainless steel sheet for automotive exhaust and railway wagons, and it sorts into three grade families matched to service. For automotive exhaust, specify 409M / 409 ferritic for the cold and mid sections (pipes, silencer and muffler shells), then step up to the stabilised ferritics 439 / 441 / 436 for the hot end (manifold, downpipe, flexible sections). For railway freight wagons, the material is 409M, the IRSM-44 corrosion-resistant wagon grade. Railway passenger coach shells (LHB-type) call for 301LN austenitic, available against indent or on request.

That covers "409m stainless steel railway" and exhaust grade selection in full: pick the family for the temperature and corrosion it will face, order it at the right thickness and finish, and take a mill test certificate (MTC) with dispatch. All material conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911 as produced by Jindal Stainless. Choosing a stainless steel sheet for automotive exhaust railway wagons, in the end, comes down to one thing: matching the grade family to the temperature and corrosion each part will see.

Relinox Stainless holds authorized MoU partner status with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) for stainless flat products. "Jindal" here refers specifically to Jindal Stainless (JSL): stainless sheet and coil out of the Hisar and Jajpur mills. It doesn't mean Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), JSW (carbon steel), or Jindal SAW (pipes), and it isn't SAIL Salem either. Rail wagons and vehicle bodies also rely on carbon steel, but the grades covered here are stainless components only. Our supply is genuine JSL-melted jindal 409m along with stabilised exhaust grades, never re-rolled bazaar stock. Every shipment comes with MTC and pan-India dispatch, out of our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi base.

Recommended grade, thickness & finish (buyer map)

This is the grade-for-use recommendation table. It maps use case to grade, explains the reasoning, and gives working thickness in both mm and gauge, plus finish. For full composition and mechanical values, follow any grade through to its page. Grade spec and price-per-kg live there too, not here, HR included.

All grades come from Jindal flat products, conformance to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, and MTC is available. 301LN sits on the verify list: it ships against indent or on request, and isn't held as stock.

Stainless steel for automotive exhaust systems

Ask for the right stainless steel sheet for automotive exhaust, and nine times out of ten the answer is a ferritic stainless steel exhaust grade, not 304. Ferritics run roughly 11–18% chromium with low nickel content. That keeps costs down against austenitic 304, and it also gives better resistance to thermal fatigue, the repeated heat-cool cycling that eventually cracks an exhaust. This is the real answer to the 409 vs 304 for exhaust question people keep asking. ss 409 exhaust has become the industry default for a reason. 409, along with the manganese-modified 409M, is the classic 409 exhaust grade used for cold and mid sections, covering the pipes and the silencer/muffler shell.

Fabricators know this material by a different name: exhaust patti. It comes as an 8x4 sheet, ready to be sheared down into stainless steel for silencer and muffler parts.

For the hot end, manifold, downpipe and flexible sections, move up to the 439 / 441 / 436 exhaust stainless family. These are stabilised ferritics: titanium in 439, titanium-plus-niobium in 441, and molybdenum with Ti/Nb in 436. Stabilisation, paired with higher chromium, buys better high-temperature oxidation resistance and thermal-fatigue life right where the gas runs hottest. Full attribute data sits on the stabilised exhaust grades 439/441/436 page. For the cold and mid sections, the workhorse grade is covered on the 409M ferritic grade, full spec & composition page.

The ferritic exhaust grade properties below come straight from ASTM A240 as nominal published values, not figures someone made up, they're composition ranges. The service-temperature entries, on the other hand, are just qualitative guidance showing where each grade fits along the exhaust line.

Stainless steel for railway wagons

For stainless steel for railway wagon body work in freight and hopper wagons, the specified grade is 409M, the 409m wagon grade set out as IRSM-44 wagon steel by Indian Railways. It's a corrosion-resistant ferritic, and it outlasts corten and carbon-steel wagon bodies over the life cycle. That matters because it cuts the corrosion loss that thins a freight wagon hopper carrying wet or abrasive bulk cargo. Traders call it the wagon patta 8x4 in market shorthand. It comes as sheet or plate at 4–6 mm for body and hopper panels. Wagon floors and walkways, by contrast, typically go to 304 with a chequered pattern for slip resistance.

Material conforms to the applicable standard as produced by Jindal Stainless, with MTC. Where your indent calls out IRSM-44 or another railway specification, confirm the exact spec against the indent on your RFQ, and we'll match the conforming Jindal material. Here's the component-by-component picture across the three duty families:

Stainless steel for railway coach shells

Passenger coach shells use 301LN railway coach stainless, the LHB coach grade. 301LN (UNS S30153) is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic that work-hardens heavily. That's what gives it the strength needed for a lightweight, all-welded, stainless car-body shell of the LHB type. This coach grade stainless sits on our verify list, and we frame 301LN as available against indent / on request rather than stocked material. Send us the coach specification and quantity, and we'll source it to your indent. Attribute data lives on the 301LN railway coach grade page. Standard sizes, thickness & price pointer

Sheet and coil come in HR or CR, standard Indian sizes, with cut-to-size available on request. Thickness gets quoted in mm and gauge, so confirm the exact stocked range on your RFQ and cross-check the published size & thickness chart. Wondering what separates hot-rolled from cold-rolled? The HR vs CR stainless sheet guide breaks it down. Finish choice, whether No.1 or 2B, is covered in the SS finishes explained guide.

FAQ

Which stainless steel is used in automotive exhaust systems?

Ferritic grades 409 and 409M handle the cold and mid sections: pipes, silencer, muffler. For the hot end (manifold, downpipe), stabilised grades 439, 441, and 436 take over. They cost less than 304 and hold up better against thermal fatigue in exhaust service.

What grade of stainless steel is used in railway wagons?

The IRSM-44 corrosion-resistant wagon grade, 409M, is used for freight and hopper bodies. Confirm the exact railway specification against your indent on the RFQ.

What grade is used for railway passenger coach shells?

301LN austenitic is a nitrogen-strengthened grade with high work-hardening capacity, and that's what gives it the strength needed for a lightweight, all-welded LHB-type coach body. It's supplied against indent or on request.

Is 409 stainless steel magnetic?

409 and 409M are ferritic grades, so yes, they're magnetic. That's normal for exhaust and wagon ferritics and doesn't point to lower quality.

Why is 409 used for exhausts instead of 304?

409 is roughly an 11% Cr ferritic. It costs less, handles thermal fatigue better, and offers enough oxidation resistance for exhaust service. 304 comes into play when more corrosion resistance is needed, and its higher cost is justified there.

What is 409M / IRSM-44?

Jindal Stainless's 409M is a manganese-modified version of the 409 ferritic grade, used in railway wagons and exhaust parts. It's supplied against IRSM-44, the Indian Railways specification family for this material. Relinox supplies conforming Jindal Stainless material with MTC.

Can you supply IRSM-44 / Indian Railways spec material?

Material is produced by Jindal Stainless and conforms to the applicable standard, with MTC supplied. Please confirm the exact railway specification (such as IRSM-44) against your indent on the RFQ, and we'll match the conforming grade.

Do you provide mill test certificates?

Jindal-melted material does come with a mill test certificate. Ask for a sample MTC on your RFQ; you'll find the details on the quality & MTC page.

What thickness and sizes are available?

8x4, 4×10 and 5×10 ft sheets, thickness roughly 0.3–6 mm for sheet and 4–12 mm+ for wagon plate. The exact stocked range gets confirmed on your RFQ.

What's the price of 409M sheet per kg?

Prices are indicative and depend on grade, thickness, finish, quantity and freight, so we don't fix a number here. See the dated indicative price list and confirm today's rate on the RFQ.

Do you deliver outside Delhi?

Yes, we ship pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, Delhi. Just send your delivery location on the RFQ and we'll confirm freight.

Can you cut sheets to my exhaust or wagon sizes?

Cutting and shearing job-work? Yes, we offer that. Send your cut sizes along with the RFQ, and we'll return sheet cut to your dimensions.
