SS 304H Stainless Steel Sheet (UNS S30409): High-Temperature Grade, Supplied Against Indent

Ss 304h sheet, also written 304h stainless steel sheet, is the high-carbon, elevated-temperature variant of the 304 family. Chemically it's 18Cr/8Ni austenitic stainless with carbon held to a controlled 0.04–0.10% band, against ≤0.08% for plain 304 and ≤0.03% for 304L. In one line, what is 304H stainless steel? It's a 304h high temperature grade engineered so the extra carbon delivers creep-rupture strength for sustained hot service: superheaters, boiler and pressure-vessel parts, the sort of applications where low-carbon grades would soften. Its designations are AISI 304H, UNS S30409, SUS 304H, EN 1.4948 (≈ X6CrNi18-10).

Relinox is a jindal ss 304h sheet supplier, an authorized Jindal Stainless MoU-partner channel that supplies genuine JSL-melted 304H on request or against indent, with mill test certificates (MTC), pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. Composition and property figures below are standard published values per ASTM A240 (Type 304H / UNS S30409), the same values referenced on the mill test certificate.

Jindal Stainless (Relinox's parent supplier) publishes the underlying data; values here follow ASTM A240 (UNS S30409), the standard grade 304 reference used throughout. Compiled by the Relinox Technical Team.

Jindal Stainless here refers only to Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), maker of stainless flat products. Relinox holds an authorized MoU partnership with JSL. The name shouldn't be confused with Jindal SAW, JSPL or JSW Steel, which deal in carbon steel and pipes. It also has nothing to do with SAIL Salem.

Supply status: 304H is quoted against indent or on request; it isn't held as floor stock. Confirm current availability and quantity through the RFQ form.

What is 304H stainless steel?

304H (also known as 304h stainless steel, or aisi 304h) is the high-carbon member of the 304 austenitic family. It's defined by UNS S30409 and set aside for elevated-temperature, creep-governed service. The grade shares the same 18Cr/8Ni base as 304, but its carbon window gets pushed up deliberately to 0.04–0.10%. That carbon stays in solution at temperature, and it's what gives the grade the creep-rupture strength the low-carbon grades simply don't have. ASTM A240 also imposes a 304h grain size requirement alongside the carbon band: grain size ASTM No. 7 or coarser. Coarser grains improve creep performance further. These two rules, taken together, are what separate 304H from ordinary 304.

Stainless steel splits first into the austenitic 300-series, and from there into the 304 family. 304H sits inside that family, the high-carbon, high-temperature variant. Its siblings are 304, meant for general purpose work, and 304L, which is low-carbon and geared toward welding and cryogenic service. Pressure-vessel and boiler applications under ASME turn to 304H for one reason: the controlled carbon content buys allowable stress at elevated temperature. In the Hindi market, buyers ask for it as 304h patta, 304h patti, or 304H chadar and sheet. These are all names for the same grade, and orders typically specify it as an 8x4 or 4x8 sheet.

Designations & equivalents

For a 304h stainless steel equivalent on a spec sheet, quote UNS S30409 / EN 1.4948. That designation set sits behind s30409 stainless, 1.4948 stainless, and the JIS synonym sus 304h.

The astm a240 304h / a240 type 304h conformance is confirmed on the mill test certificate; see ASTM A240 and IS 6911 for the standard scope. Note that 304H is not separately listed in the common IS 6911 grade list, where an Indian-standard callout is needed, it is supplied to the ASTM A240 S30409 requirement on request.

304H chemical composition

The 304h composition / 304h chemical composition shown here follows ASTM A240 for Type 304H (UNS S30409). Carbon is the row that sets it apart. Not a simple maximum, but a floor-and-ceiling band: 0.04–0.10%. A floor, not just a ceiling. 304H needs enough carbon on hand for creep strength, and it still needs that cap, the same as plain 304.

ElementMin %Max %
Carbon (C)0.040.10
Chromium (Cr)18.020.0
Nickel (Ni)8.010.5
Manganese (Mn)—2.00
Silicon (Si)—0.75
Phosphorus (P)—0.045
Sulphur (S)—0.030
Nitrogen (N)—0.10
Iron (Fe)Balance

Two requirements make this a 304H rather than a 304 certificate: the carbon band of 0.04–0.10%, and the 304h grain size requirement of ASTM No. 7 or coarser noted on the MTC. Everything else, including chromium, nickel and the residual limits, matches the 18Cr/8Ni base of standard 304.

304H mechanical & physical properties

The 304H mechanical properties below are annealed reference minima per ASTM A240; the physical constants come from standard published 304 family values. These are the figures, the 304H tensile strength among them, quoted against indent.

Mechanical properties (annealed sheet)

Tensile strength (min)515 (75 ksi)MPa
0.2% yield strength (min)205 (30 ksi)MPa
Elongation (min)40%
Hardness (max)≤201 HBW / ≤92 HRB—

Physical properties

PropertyValueUnit
304H density~8.0 (7.9–8.0; ≈7,900–8,000)g/cm³ (kg/m³)
304H melting point / range~1,400–1,450°C
Max service temperature~800 continuous (creep / elevated-temp service; application-dependent)°C
Magnetic responseNon-magnetic (annealed)—

So the 304h density is about 8.0 g/cm³ (≈7,900–8,000 kg/m³) and the 304h melting point / melting range is roughly 1,400–1,450 °C. The value that matters for this grade is the elevated-temperature behaviour: 304H keeps useful creep resistance and allowable stress in sustained hot service to around 800 °C+ continuous, application-dependent, the whole reason the carbon band exists. To turn these into weight per sheet, use our SS sheet weight chart or the stainless steel weight calculator at density ~8.0.

Corrosion behaviour & magnetic response

Aqueous corrosion is where 304H and standard 304 part ways from the rest of the story, they behave essentially the same. The raised carbon in 304H is there for creep strength, not corrosion resistance, and it doesn't touch the general corrosion resistance of the 18Cr/8Ni base. There's one catch tied to that carbon, though: in the 425–870 °C sensitisation range, it can precipitate as chromium carbide at grain boundaries. For welded parts that need to resist wet corrosion after hot service, a stabilised or low-carbon grade is the safer route.

304H is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, same as the rest of the austenitic 304 family. That said, heavy cold work can bring on a slight magnetic response. As always, rely on the mill test certificate rather than a magnet to confirm the grade.

304H vs 304L vs 304 (high-temperature)

304H vs 304L, and 304H vs 304, both turn on one variable: carbon, and what that carbon means for what the part has to survive. That's especially true for the 304H vs 304L high temperature and creep comparison. All three grades share the same 18Cr/8Ni austenitic base. Carbon range and intended duty are what set them apart. There's no separate 304H-vs-304L guide out there, so this stands in as the decision table for that comparison.

Choose 304H when service temperature and creep govern, the extra carbon buys allowable stress in the hot zone. Choose 304L when weld-zone corrosion or cryogenic toughness matters instead; its low carbon avoids sensitisation. For ordinary ambient service, plain 304 does the job. Is 304H stronger than 304L at high temperature? Yes, and that's exactly the trade-off the carbon band was built for. For the standard 304 and 304L pages, see SS 304 and SS 304L.

304H vs 321 vs 310S: choosing among high-temperature grades

304H sits partway up the high-temperature ladder. Once service temperatures climb past what 304H can handle, or sensitisation and oxidation start to bite, buyers reach for the 304h vs 321 and 304h vs 310s comparisons and move up a rung.

GradeApprox. max continuous tempNote
304H~800 °C+Controlled carbon (0.04–0.10%) for creep strength in the 304 family
321~870 °CTitanium-stabilised for the 425–870 °C sensitisation range
310S~1150 °C25Cr/20Ni heat-resistant; highest of this austenitic set

For titanium-stabilised high-temperature service, compare SS 321; for oxidation and scaling resistance well above 304H, compare the high-temperature 310S alternative. Browse the full grades hub to compare across the range.

Applications of 304H

304h high temperature grade demand clusters wherever equipment runs hot under pressure and must hold its strength over long service:

Boiler and pressure-vessel parts: shells, headers, and components where ASME allowable stress at temperature governs the design.

Superheaters and high-temperature piping. This covers superheater and reheater elements, along with hot steam and process piping running above the range of plain 304.

Heat exchangers and furnace or exhaust components: heat-exchanger internals, plus exhaust and furnace parts, where creep resistance matters more than aqueous corrosion.

These are elevated-temperature, creep-governed uses, for the general process-equipment and fabrication routes 304H feeds into, see chemical process plants and pharma & dairy equipment. When to choose 304H: pick it when service temperature and creep-rupture strength are what decide the part. Weld-zone corrosion is a different question entirely, and that's where 304L does the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is SS 304H?

SS 304H is 304's high-carbon cousin, running 0.04–0.10% C, and it's built for elevated-temperature and creep-rupture service. Designation: UNS S30409. That controlled carbon content, along with a coarser grain size, gives it strength at temperature that plain 304 and 304L simply don't have, as spelled out in ASTM A240.

304H vs 304L, which for high temperature?

304H is the clear pick. It's higher carbon content (0.04–0.10%) gives it the creep strength needed for sustained hot service. 304L, by contrast, keeps carbon low (≤0.03%), a trait aimed at weld-zone corrosion resistance and cryogenic toughness rather than heat. When temperature is what matters, go with 304H. When weld corrosion is the concern, 304L wins out.

What is the maximum service temperature of 304H?

304H holds up under continuous elevated-temperature service to around 800 °C+, depending on the application. Controlled carbon content and coarse grain size preserve creep-rupture strength in that range, per ASTM A240 and standard 304-family data.

Is 304H magnetic?

No, 304H doesn't attract a magnet in the annealed condition, same as the rest of the austenitic 304 family. Cold work can change that, though. Push it hard enough and you'll get a bit of magnetic response even on a genuine 304H part. That's why the mill test certificate is what confirms the grade, not a magnet test.

What is the chemical composition of 304H?

Per ASTM A240 (UNS S30409), carbon runs 0.04–0.10%, chromium 18.0–20.0%, and nickel 8.0–10.5%. Manganese is capped at 2.00%, silicon at 0.75%, phosphorus at 0.045%, sulphur at 0.030%, and nitrogen at 0.10%. A grain size of ASTM No. 7 or coarser is also required.

Does Jindal / Relinox supply 304H?

As a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, Relinox can supply 304H on request or against indent. It's a specialised high-temperature grade, not something kept as floor stock. Confirm current availability and quantity through the RFQ form.

Do you provide MTC (mill test certificate) for 304H?

Yes, 304H comes with a mill test certificate as an authorized JSL channel, documenting the carbon band, grain size and mechanicals. Request a sample MTC via the RFQ form.

What sizes and forms, sheet, plate, patta?

Sheet, plate, coil and strip/patta get quoted against indent. Standard sizes are 8x4 (1250×2500), 4×10 (1250×3050) and 5×10 (1500×3000) mm, with thickness given in mm plus gauge. Exact stocked sizes get confirmed on RFQ.

What is the price of 304H per kg?

304H is a controlled high-temperature grade, and it's quoted against indent, usually dearer than plain 304. We don't post a fixed ₹/kg for it; instead we share an indicative rate on RFQ. Check the SS 304 sheet price page for the 304 baseline, and confirm today's rate for 304H on RFQ.

Will you deliver 304H to my city?

Ajmeri Gate, Delhi is our stock point, and yes, we dispatch pan-India. Every order ships with a GST invoice, and freight terms are spelled out upfront, no surprises. Want a delivered quote with MTC? Just send your city and requirement through the RFQ form.

How is 304H different from standard 304?

Both are 18Cr/8Ni austenitic, but 304H pushes carbon up to a 0.04–0.10% band (304 stays at ≤0.08%) and tacks on a grain-size requirement of ASTM No. 7 or coarser. These two rules are what give 304H its creep strength at temperature, per ASTM A240.
