Stainless Steel Sheet for Fabrication & Engineering: Grades, Cutting & Job Work
Jindal Stainless makes the flat sheet that a job shop or engineering workshop cuts, shears, bends, forms and welds into finished parts. The grade you pick decides how well the material welds, forms and holds up over time. For most stainless steel sheet fabrication work, go with 304, the all-round workhorse. Step up to 316/316L when parts face corrosion, marine exposure or chemical contact. Drop to 202/J4 for cost-sensitive indoor or decorative jobs. Choose duplex 2205 when high strength is the priority.

That's really what "which SS grade for fabrication" comes down to. Match the grade, thickness and finish to the job, order it cut to size, and make sure a mill test certificate (MTC) ships with the material. Every sheet conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, as produced by Jindal.
Relinox Stainless holds authorized MoU partner status with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), for stainless flat products only. That doesn't include Jindal SAW, JSPL, or JSW, which cover carbon steel and pipes. It isn't SAIL Salem either. We supply genuine JSL-melted jindal ss sheet for fabrication, a true jindal stainless fabrication sheet, with cutting and job-work included, dispatched pan-India from our stock point at Ajmeri Gate, Delhi. You might call it ss sheet fabrication, an ss fabrication sheet, or fabrication ke liye ss sheet. Whatever the term, this page is the grade-and-processing guide you need.
Which stainless grade for your fabrication job?
Choosing a fabrication grade ss sheet comes down to matching the part's service to the right alloy. The table below works as a best ss sheet for fabrication selector: it answers which ss grade for fabrication by mapping grade to typical use, key property, suggested finish and working thickness. Follow any grade through to its page for composition and mechanical values.
| Grade | Use in fabrication | Key property | Finish | Thickness | Grade page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304 / 304L | General engineering, weldments, ducting, frames | Best all-round; 304L low-carbon for heavy welding | 2B / No.4 | 0.5–6 mm | 304 · 304L |
| 316 / 316L | Corrosive, marine or chemical-adjacent parts | Molybdenum-bearing corrosion resistance | 2B / No.4 | 0.5–6 mm | 316 · 316L |
| 202 / J4 / 201 | Cost-sensitive indoor / decorative fabrication | Economical 200-/J-series | 2B / No.4 | 0.5–3 mm | 202 · J4 · 201 |
| 430 | Appliance panels, non-structural | Ferritic, magnetic, economical | 2B / BA | 0.5–3 mm | 430 |
| 409M | Utility structural, non-decorative | Utility ferritic | No.1 / 2B | 1–4 mm | 409M |
| Duplex 2205 | High-strength / aggressive service | High strength + corrosion resistance | 2B / No.1 | 2–12 mm | 2205 |
All grades come from Jindal flat products, conforming to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, with MTC available.
304 and 316 sheet for fabrication
A 304 sheet for fabrication is what most job shops reach for by default. It welds and forms well, and it covers general engineering work, brackets, enclosures, ducting and frames without fuss. Switch to a 316 sheet for fabrication when the part will face chlorides, marine air or chemical splash. The added molybdenum buys corrosion resistance that 304 simply can't match. For the full head-to-head, see the SS 304 vs 316 guide.
Cost-optimised and high-strength options
For indoor work, low-corrosion jobs, or anything decorative where cost matters most, the 200-series and J-series grades handle it fine and cheaper: 202 and J4. Ferritic 430 is the right call for appliance panels. But when a part carries load or sees harsh service, you need a duplex sheet for fabrication, and that means a genuinely high strength ss sheet: duplex 2205. It pairs high yield strength with strong corrosion resistance. Narrow parts and patta work get covered separately, under processing.
Sheet thickness & sizes for fabrication
SS sheet thickness for fabrication comes listed in both mm and gauge, across the standard Indian sheet sizes. The reference below matches common fabrication gauges against their mm equivalent and the standard sizes: 8×4, 4×10 and 5×10. Values follow the standard gauge conversion. Confirm the exact stocked range on your RFQ, and check it against the published size & thickness chart too.
| Gauge | Thickness (mm, approx.) | Typical fabrication use | Standard sheet sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 G | 0.6 mm | Light panels, enclosures, trim | 8×4 (1250×2500) 4×10 (1250×3050) 5×10 (1500×3000) mm |
| 20 G | 0.9 mm | General sheet-metal parts, covers | |
| 18 G | 1.2 mm | Ducting, cabinets, brackets | |
| 16 G | 1.5 mm | Frames, weldments, structural panels | |
| 14 G | 2.0 mm | Heavier weldments, load panels |
Sheet runs roughly 0.3–6 mm for most fabrication; heavier work moves to stainless steel plates (up to 12 mm+), and narrow strip parts to SS patta / strips. See also the SS sheet weight chart and the weight calculator for weight-per-sheet planning. No ₹/kg table here, see today's indicative price list.
Weldability & formability notes
Grade behaviour on the shop floor makes the difference between an easy job and a scrapped part. Plain 304 fabricates and welds well for most work, but it doesn't hold up as well on heavy, thick, or multi-pass welds. There, a low-carbon ss sheet welding grade, 304L, resists weld-zone sensitisation (chromium-carbide precipitation) and keeps corrosion resistance intact across the heat-affected zone. For chloride service, 316L brings that same low-carbon weld advantage, plus molybdenum.
For forming, the austenitic grades (304, 316, 202) work-harden as they deform, and that trait suits bending, roll-forming and deep drawing nicely. Ferritic grades (430, 409M) are a different story: magnetic, less ductile, and better suited to simple bends and flat panels than to a deep draw. In practice, that means ss sheet shearing, bending, forming and deep drawing all lean toward the austenitic 300-series when the shape gets demanding, while ferritics hold down cost on flat, lightly-formed parts. Finish is its own decision: 2B for general work, No.4 for visible weldments and exposed panels, No.1/HR for heavier plate fabrication, and BA where a mirror finish is needed. That's covered in the SS finishes explained guide. The distinction between hot- and cold-rolled base, HR versus CR, is covered separately in the HR vs CR stainless sheet guide.

FAQ
Which stainless steel grade is best for fabrication?
304 stays the default all-round choice for general fabrication. For corrosive or marine exposure, reach for 316/316L; 202/J4 suits cost-sensitive indoor work; duplex 2205 covers jobs that demand high strength. See the SS 304 vs 316 guide.
Which SS grade is easiest to weld?
304 fabricates and welds well for most work. For heavy or multi-pass welding jobs, though, low-carbon 304L is the better call, it resists sensitisation in the weld zone and keeps corrosion resistance intact across the heat-affected zone. Need the same protection in chloride service? Reach for 316L instead.
Can you cut stainless steel sheet to size?
Yes, cut-to-size and shearing are both provided from stock. Send us your dimensions or cutting list with the RFQ, and we'll return sheet cut to spec.
Do you provide laser cutting for SS sheet?
Laser, plasma and waterjet cutting are all handled as job-work, yes. Send us your DXF or drawing on the RFQ and we'll send back cut blanks or profiles.
What is SS sheet job work?
It's processing your material or ours, cutting, shearing, perforation, finishing, to your spec before dispatch. The sheet arrives ready to fabricate.
What thickness SS sheet is used in fabrication?
Commonly, sheet runs 0.5–6 mm (roughly 24–14 gauge). Heavier work calls for plate up to 12 mm or more. Check the size & thickness chart and confirm the stocked range on your RFQ.
Is 304 or 202 better for indoor fabrication?
For general, long-lasting use, 304 stands out as the sturdier all-around choice. If you're working indoors or on decorative pieces where corrosion risk stays low and cost matters more, 202/J4 brings the price down. See the SS 202 vs 304 guide for a closer comparison.
Do you supply genuine Jindal material with a certificate?
