Jindal J4 Stainless Steel Sheet: Grade, Composition & Supply (India)
Jindal J4 is a proprietary low-nickel 200-series (chrome-manganese, Cr-Mn) austenitic stainless steel, developed and marketed by Jindal Stainless (JSL). It's a copper-bearing grade built for economy, suited to utensils, cookware, furniture and appliance panels rather than wet or coastal environments. J4 is Jindal's own trade name, so it carries no separate AISI/UNS/IS number. Its closest relatives are the standardised 200-series grades: 201, 202 and 204Cu.
This page is a plain HTML j4 stainless steel datasheet. You'll find the j4 grade stainless steel definition, its composition and properties, corrosion and magnetic behaviour, a quick J4-vs-304/202/204Cu comparison, available forms and sizes, and where to source genuine jindal j4 sheet.
Relinox Stainless holds MoU-partner status with Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. J4 happens to be Jindal's own grade, which makes the authorized-channel angle uniquely ownable here: we supply genuine JSL J4 melted material, mill test certificates included. To be clear, this is Jindal Stainless (JSL). It isn't Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), all of which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it isn't SAIL Salem either. J4 is a proprietary grade name, separate from standardised grades such as 304 or 202.

What is J4 stainless steel?
What is J4 stainless steel, or as buyers put it, j4 kya hai? It's a mainstream j4 stainless steel flat-product grade: a low-nickel Cr-Mn austenitic where manganese, copper and nitrogen stand in for most of the nickel used in the 300-series. You'll see it written as j4, grade j4, ss j4, j4 ss, J-4, "j4 steel", jindal j4 stainless steel or jsl j4. It belongs to Jindal's J-series of economy austenitics.
Because nickel is the most expensive alloying element, this low-nickel chemistry lowers cost and price volatility while keeping the austenitic (formable, largely non-magnetic) structure, which is exactly why j4 grade stainless steel is a workhorse for utensils, cookware circles and modular-kitchen furniture. It sits in the family as: stainless → austenitic → 200-series (Cr-Mn, low-nickel) → Jindal J-series → J4 → forms (sheet, coil, patta, circle). J4 is a proprietary JSL grade, so unlike 202 or 304 it carries no AISI/UNS/IS designation; where a standardised near-equivalent is needed, the 200-series Cr-Mn grades (201/202/204Cu) are the closest family. For the wider lineage, j4 vs j1, j series grades and the jindal j series as a whole, see the Jindal J-series overview.
J4 chemical composition
J4 chemical composition is a Cr-Mn-Ni-Cu austenitic, built around low nickel and added copper. This j4 stainless steel composition isn't an ASTM A240 grade; it's a proprietary JSL chemistry, so the exact element ranges come from Jindal Stainless published data, and the actual heat analysis gets confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC) that ships with the material. Ask for a copy against your indent. The table below lays out what each element does in the J4 balance.
| Element | Role in the J4 (low-nickel Cr-Mn) balance |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | Kept low for formability and weldability |
| Manganese (Mn) | High, the Cr-Mn austenite former that partly replaces nickel |
| Silicon (Si) | Residual deoxidiser |
| Chromium (Cr) | Primary corrosion-resisting element (passive film) |
| Nickel (Ni) | Low, the defining economy feature vs 304 |
| Copper (Cu) | Added, improves deep-draw formability for utensil bodies |
| Nitrogen (N) | Austenite stabiliser and strengthener |
| Phosphorus (P) / Sulphur (S) | Residual, held low |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Against 304 (8–10.5% Ni, ~18–20% Cr), J4 swaps out most of the nickel for manganese, copper and nitrogen. Compared with 201/202, it's Jindal's own economy variant of the same low-nickel family. The precise j4 specification figures follow JSL's published data and are confirmed on the MTC.
J4 mechanical & physical properties
Jindal Stainless publishes the j4 mechanical properties and j4 stainless steel properties shown below as standard reference values for the low-nickel 200-series austenitic family. The actual guaranteed figures for any given J4 heat come from Jindal's published data and get confirmed on the mill test certificate. As with other Cr-Mn austenitics, nitrogen strengthening tends to push J4's annealed yield above that of 304, and the work-hardening rate runs higher during forming too.
| Property (annealed, 200-series Cr-Mn reference) | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | ≈ 515 MPa (family reference; J4 per MTC) |
| Yield strength (0.2% proof), min | ≈ 275 MPa (higher than annealed 304) |
| Elongation, min | ≈ 40% (good ductility for forming) |
| Hardness | Moderate (rises with cold work); confirmed on MTC |
The j4 physical properties are those of a 200-series austenitic. Density is used for weight-per-sheet maths, see the SS sheet weight chart and the stainless steel weight calculator for j4 sheet weight and j4 8x4 weight figures.
| Physical property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.9–8.0 g/cm³ (≈ 7,900–8,000 kg/m³) |
| Structure | Austenitic (Cr-Mn, copper- and nitrogen-bearing) |
| Magnetic response (annealed) | Largely non-magnetic |
| Work-hardening rate | Higher than 304 |
In the annealed condition, J4 behaves like most austenitics: largely non-magnetic. Cold work changes that. Bend it, deep-draw it, roll-form it, and a slight magnetic pull can show up, because Cr-Mn austenite is less stable than 304. That's ordinary 200-series behavior, not evidence of "fake" stainless.
Corrosion resistance & where J4 fits
On j4 corrosion resistance, the honest answer to "is j4 rust proof" is: no stainless is fully rust-proof, and J4, with lower nickel and chromium than 304, has a moderate, narrower corrosion envelope. It performs well in dry, indoor and mildly humid service (utensils, cookware, furniture, appliance panels) but should be kept out of marine, coastal, chloride-heavy, wet food-processing or aggressive chemical duty. For j4 stainless steel food grade questions, J4 is widely used for dry indoor utensils and kitchenware; for guaranteed wet food-contact, dairy or coastal service, step up to SS 304 or 316, see food-grade stainless steel.
When to choose J4: go with J4 when you don't need 304-grade corrosion resistance and cost is a factor. Indoor, dry, decorative and utensil work fits well here. Formability and a bright surface matter more than chloride resistance in these cases.

J4 vs 304, j4 vs 202, j4 vs 201, j4 vs 204cu: that's the short list of questions people actually ask, and they all boil down to the same three things. Nickel content. How much corrosion the grade can shrug off. What it costs.
That's it for the quick take. The full comparison, grade by grade, sits on the other pages.
| Grade | Nickel level | Corrosion resistance | Relative cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jindal J4 | Low (Cr-Mn-Cu) | Moderate, indoor/dry | Lowest | Utensils, cookware, furniture, appliance panels |

Typical applications of J4
J4 stainless steel's practical uses and applications come down to one thing: low nickel content that works fine in dry, indoor settings. When people ask about J4 for utensils or J4 for kitchen work, a few answers come up again and again:
- Utensils, cookware and pressed circles, see utensils & kitchenware
- Furniture, modular kitchens and appliance panels, see furniture & modular kitchens
Where not to use J4: coastal, marine, chloride-heavy, wet food-processing or aggressive chemical service. Specify SS 304 or 316 for those instead.

Frequently asked questions
Is Jindal J4 good?
For the right job, yes. J4 is honest economy stainless: good forming, decent shine, and the lowest cost on the ladder, right for dry indoor duty like utensils, furniture, trims and budget fabrication. For wet, coastal or food-contact service, step up to SS 304; the nickel is what buys corrosion resistance, and J4 deliberately carries less of it.
What is J4 stainless steel?
Jindal J4 is a proprietary low-nickel 200-series (chrome-manganese, Cr-Mn) austenitic stainless steel that Jindal Stainless developed for utensils, cookware and furniture. It carries a JSL trade name rather than an AISI/UNS grade number. Its closest family peers are 201, 202 and 204Cu.
Is J4 stainless steel magnetic?
J4 stays largely non-magnetic in the annealed condition, much like other austenitics, though it can pick up slight magnetism after cold-forming operations such as bending or deep drawing. A weak magnetic pull on a formed J4 part is normal for 200-series grades. It doesn't mean the stainless is fake.
What is J4's chemical composition?
Jindal Stainless's J4 is a Cr-Mn-Ni-Cu austenitic that runs low on nickel, with copper thrown in and manganese and nitrogen picking up most of the slack nickel would otherwise carry. It's a proprietary JSL chemistry, not an ASTM A240 grade. So the element ranges quoted come from Jindal's own published data, and the actual heat analysis gets confirmed on the mill test certificate.
J4 vs 304, what is the difference?
J4 has far less nickel, so it comes in lower on both corrosion resistance and cost. 304 remains the Cr-Ni benchmark for wet, outdoor and food-contact durability. Pick J4 for dry indoor utensils and furniture. For wet or coastal service, go with 304. The J4 vs 304 comparison has the full breakdown.
Is J4 stainless steel rust-proof or food grade?
No stainless steel is completely immune to rust. J4 offers moderate corrosion resistance, which fits dry, indoor uses like utensils and furniture. It's a common choice for dry indoor kitchenware. But if you need guaranteed performance in wet food-contact settings, dairy environments, or anything near the coast, 304 is the better food-contact grade to reach for.
What is the price of J4 sheet per kg?
Stainless rates shift daily, so instead of quoting a fixed figure here we publish a dated indicative price list. J4 usually runs below 304 when nickel content is lower. Check the price list, or send your requirement through the RFQ form to confirm today's rate.
Is this genuine Jindal J4?
Relinox is indeed a Jindal Stainless MoU partner. J4 is Jindal's own grade, so we supply genuine JSL-melted J4, backed by a mill test certificate. Ask for a copy of the MTC against your indent.
What sizes and forms does J4 come in?
Jindal base sheet, coil, patta/patti and circle come in standard Indian sizes like 1250×2500 (8×4), 1250×3050 (4×10) and 1500×3000 (5×10) mm, across various gauges. Confirm the exact stocked thickness range on request against your indent.
Can I get J4 in a mirror, PVD or designer finish?
Mirror, PVD-colour, etched and embossed finishes are available on the J4 base as job-work finishing, alongside standard 2B, No.4 and BA finishes.
Do you provide a GST invoice and HSN code?
Yes, supply is on a GST invoice. For the HSN code and GST rate applicable to stainless sheet, check the SS HSN codes & GST reference.
How does J4 compare with J1, J2 and the wider J-series?
J4 sits at the higher-chromium end of Jindal's low-nickel J-series, a family that also covers J1, J2 and JT in the utensil and appliance segment. For a full breakdown of how the grades stack up against one another, see the Jindal J-series overview.
