Stainless Steel Sheet for Elevators & Lifts: Grades, Finishes & Supply
Jindal Stainless recommends grade 304 stainless sheet in a No.4 hairline finish for most elevator and lift interiors: cabins, doors and frames. For coastal, humid or exterior glass lifts, step up to 316 or 316L. Reserve 430 for dry, cost-led goods-lift interiors only.

That's really the whole decision behind any elevator stainless steel sheet order. Match grade, finish and thickness to each surface: cabin walls, landing and car doors, door frames, ceilings, kick plates. Then buy genuine Jindal material with a mill test certificate. Whether it's a stainless steel sheet for elevator work, an ss sheet for lift panel, or an SS sheet for lift India-wide dispatch, they all start from the same grade-and-finish logic. The material conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, as produced by Jindal Stainless.
Relinox Stainless holds an authorized MoU with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) for stainless flat products. That's not Jindal SAW, not JSW, not JSPL, since those deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it isn't SAIL Salem either. What we supply is genuine JSL-melted jindal ss sheet for elevator and lift work. Call it jindal elevator sheet if you prefer; it comes in the full grade range, never re-rolled bazaar stock. Everything ships pan-India from our stock point at Ajmeri Gate, Delhi, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. Fabricators phrase the request differently depending on where they're from. Ask for lift ke liye SS sheet or lift wali steel sheet, and this is exactly the material and grade map they're after.
Which stainless steel grade for elevators & lifts?
The core question, which grade for elevator cabins, and 304 vs 316 for lift work, comes down to the environment. 304 is the austenitic default for indoor passenger cabins: formable, corrosion-safe and it takes hairline, mirror and PVD finishes cleanly. 316 / 316L adds molybdenum for chloride and pitting resistance, specify it for coastal, high-humidity or exterior/glass lifts. 430 is a lower-cost ferritic (magnetic) option for dry, cost-led goods lift or freight elevator ss sheet interiors only, usually in a heavier gauge. The table below maps each component to a recommended grade, finish and typical thickness; the 304-vs-316 decision is expanded in the SS 304 vs 316 guide.
| Component | Recommended grade | Why | Typical finish | Indicative thickness, mm (gauge) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cabin walls (interior, dry) | 304 | Austenitic, formable, corrosion-safe for indoor cabins | No.4 hairline / mirror / PVD / rigidized | 1.0–1.5 mm (20–16 G) |
| Landing & car doors | 304 | Rigidity plus finish match on high-touch surfaces | Hairline / rigidized / PVD | 1.2–2.0 mm (18–14 G) |
| Door frames / jambs (patta) | 304 | Wear and impact at the entry line | Hairline / mirror | 1.5–2.0 mm (16–14 G) |
| Cabin ceiling / valance | 304 | Light-weight panels | Hairline / mirror / PVD | 0.8–1.2 mm (22–18 G) |
| Kick plate / skirting | 304 | Abrasion at the floor line | Hairline / rigidized | 1.2–1.5 mm (18–16 G) |
| Coastal / exterior / glass lift | 316 / 316L | Added Mo for pitting and chloride resistance | Hairline / mirror | 1.2–2.0 mm (18–14 G) |
| Budget goods-lift interior (dry) | 430 (ferritic, magnetic) | Lower cost, indoor only; less corrosion-resistant | 2B / hairline | 1.0–1.5 mm (20–16 G) |

Finishes for lift cabins & doors
The finish shapes how the room looks and how it wears over years of hands touching it. The table below lines up each finish with its look, how it takes fingerprints, how it scratches, which component it fits, and the page where you'll find that finish.
| Finish | Look | Fingerprint / scratch behaviour | Best-for component | Owner page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No.4 hairline | Fine brushed satin | Hides both well, the lift default | Cabin walls, doors, kick plates | Stainless steel sheets |
| Mirror (No.8) | Bright reflective | Shows fingerprints and scratches | Premium lobby cabins, feature panels | Mirror finish |
| PVD colour | Gold, rose-gold, black tints | Good; anti-fingerprint variants available | Design-led cabin walls, doors | PVD colour |
| Rigidized / embossed | Textured, patterned | Best, masks marks, vandal-resistant | High-traffic and goods-lift panels | Embossed |
| Etched | Patterned matt design | Good, pattern hides marks | Decorative feature walls | Etched |
Designer finishes are job-work done on Jindal base sheet. For finish theory, see SS finishes explained.
Hairline (No.4): the default lift finish
A hairline sheet for lift cabins, also sold as a No.4 brushed sheet for elevator interiors, is the industry default. The fine directional grain hides day-to-day scuffs and fingerprints, and it wipes clean without much effort. Most passenger cabins, car doors and kick plates ship in No.4. You'll find the base sheet on the stainless steel sheets page.
Mirror finish for premium lobbies
A mirror sheet for lift lobbies, a mirror finish elevator sheet in No.8, reads as premium but shows every fingerprint. Reserve it for low-touch feature panels rather than door leaves. Finish entity and pricing are owned by the mirror finish SS sheets page.
PVD colour: gold, rose-gold, black
For design-led cabins, a PVD gold, rose-gold or black elevator sheet delivers a coloured, durable finish, and anti-fingerprint PVD variants suit high-touch doors well. You'll find colour options and detail on the PVD colour SS sheets page.
Rigidized, embossed & etched: anti-fingerprint, vandal-resistant
An etched, embossed or rigidized anti-fingerprint lift sheet is the practical answer for busy and public lifts. The texture hides marks and resists denting. A no-fingerprint SS sheet for lift brief points here, and so does a vandal-resistant or textured lift panel requirement. Route to embossed, etched or water-ripple designer sheets.
Component-by-component guide
Each lift surface has its own sweet spot for grade, finish, and thickness. Read this alongside the grade selection table above.
Cabin walls
The lift cabin ss sheet, a lift cabin stainless steel sheet used for interior wall panels, also searched as an elevator cabin ss sheet or cabin wall panel sheet, usually comes in 304 with a No.4 hairline, mirror or PVD finish, running around 1.0–1.5 mm. It's the largest visible surface in the cabin, so whatever finish you pick here sets the tone for the whole space. Fabricators tend to order this one first; it also goes by the name elevator wall panel sheet.
Landing & car doors
An elevator door SS sheet, or lift door stainless sheet, covers both the landing door at each floor and the car door SS sheet on the cabin. It runs 304 in hairline, rigidized or PVD, 1.2–2.0 mm. Doors take a beating from constant hands and traffic, so they need that rigidity. This is exactly where rigidized or PVD anti-fingerprint finishes prove their worth.
Door frames (jambs / architrave)
The elevator door frame, jamb or architrave sheet takes the brunt of wear and knocks right at the entry line. Specify 304 at 1.5–2.0 mm in hairline or mirror. Builders often turn to ss patta / patti for lift door frame work for these, a narrow strip cut and folded to match the jamb profile. That routes to SS patta / strips.
Ceiling & valance
An elevator ceiling ss sheet, or lift false ceiling panel, is a lightweight 304 panel, usually 0.8–1.2 mm thick. It comes in hairline, mirror or PVD to match the walls and holds the light fittings.
Kick plates & skirting
A lift kick plate, also called a skirting ss sheet, protects the floor line from trolley and foot abrasion. Use 304 at 1.2–1.5 mm, either hairline or rigidized. Rigidized hides scuffs best, particularly in goods and service lifts.
Sheet sizes, thickness & gauge for elevators
We stock the standard Indian market sizes and cut to your cabin panel drawing. The classic 8x4 ss sheet for lift (also written 4x8 sheet lift) covers most cabin and door panels. 4x10 and 5x10 suit taller cabins, along with full-height door leaves. For ss sheet thickness for elevator work and gauge for lift door leaves, elevator components typically run 0.8–2.0 mm. Walls stay thinner; doors and frames run thicker.
| Size (ft / mm) | Typical use | Thickness band, mm (gauge) |
|---|---|---|
| 8x4, 1250 × 2500 | Cabin walls, ceilings, kick plates | 0.8–1.5 mm (22–16 G) |
| 4x10, 1250 × 3050 | Tall cabin panels, door leaves | 1.0–2.0 mm (20–14 G) |
| 5x10, 1500 × 3000 | Full-height doors, large panels | 1.2–2.0 mm (18–14 G) |
Sizes are standard, and mm-to-gauge follows the usual sheet-metal conversion. Cut-to-size is available as job-work. Confirm the stocked thickness range on RFQ.
For sheet weight per 8x4 and other sizes, we won't restate a single figure here, since weight comes down to length × width × thickness × density. Use the weight calculator instead, or check the SS sheet weight chart. Need full size and gauge references? See SS sheet sizes & thickness.
Compliance & material assurance
Elevator sheet from Jindal Stainless conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, and it ships with a mill test certificate. That's mill conformance, not a Relinox certification. Genuine JSL-melted material matters here: re-rolled bazaar stock can carry off-grade chemistry, the kind that fails at welds and corrodes in humid shafts. Standards detail lives at ASTM A240 and IS 6911. MTC handling is covered at quality & mill test certificates.

FAQ
Which stainless steel grade is best for elevator cabins?
For most indoor passenger lifts, grade 304 does the job well, it forms easily, resists corrosion and takes hairline, mirror and PVD finishes without fuss. Coastal, humid or exterior/glass lifts call for 316 / 316L instead. Reserve 430 for dry, cost-led goods lifts only.
304 or 316 for a lift, what's the difference?
316 brings in molybdenum, which sharpens resistance to chloride and pitting, so it earns its keep near the coast or outdoors. Indoors, 304 remains the standard pick. See the comparison in the SS 304 vs 316 guide.
What finish do elevator interiors use?
No.4 hairline is the default choice, and it earns that spot by hiding scratches and fingerprints. Mirror finish works best in premium lobbies. For something more design-forward, PVD gold, rose-gold, and black finishes, along with rigidized and embossed options, deliver anti-fingerprint, anti-vandal surfaces.
What thickness of SS sheet is used for lift doors and walls?
Typically 0.8–2.0 mm. Cabin walls and ceilings run thinner, from 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm, while doors and frames come in thicker, at 1.2 mm to 2.0 mm. The exact gauge is set by the OEM, so check it against your indent on the RFQ.
Which sheet size do you supply for lifts?
Standard 8x4 (1250×2500), 4x10 (1250×3050) and 5x10 (1500×3000) mm, plus cut-to-size options matched to your cabin panel dimensions. Check the SS sheet sizes & thickness page for details.
Is elevator stainless steel magnetic?
304 and 316, both austenitic, are largely non-magnetic. 430, ferritic, is magnetic. A quick magnet test tells a budget goods-lift 430 panel from a 304 cabin.
How do I stop fingerprints showing on lift panels?
Rigidize the surface, emboss it, or go with a hairline finish instead of a mirror polish. A PVD anti-fingerprint coating works too. The texture or grain hides marks on doors and walls that get touched constantly.
Is your material genuine Jindal Stainless?
Relinox holds an MoU partnership with Jindal Stainless (JSL), and it supplies JSL-melted material backed by mill test certificates rather than re-rolled bazaar stock. See quality & MTC.
Do you provide mill test certificates for elevator orders?
Yes, a mill test certificate goes out with dispatch. Request a sample copy along with your RFQ so you can match heat and chemistry to your indent.
Can you cut sheets to our cabin panel sizes?
Yes, cut-to-size, shearing and designer finishing are all available as job-work on Jindal base sheet. Just send your cutting list along with the RFQ.
Do you deliver outside Delhi?
Yes, we dispatch pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point, and the logistics are honest, with no fake local address. Send your city and quantity on the RFQ and we'll confirm freight terms.
What does an elevator SS sheet cost?
The rate depends on grade, finish, thickness and quantity, so we won't pin down a number here. Check the dated indicative price list and confirm today's rate on the RFQ.
