Stainless Steel Weight Calculator: Sheet, Plate, Coil & Circle (kg)

Stainless steel sheet weight, cut to the essentials: Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. This calculator hands you the exact kg figure for any SS sheet, plate, coil, strip/patta or circle, once you feed it grade, size (mm or 8x4) and thickness. Everything a stainless steel weight calculation needs sits in one place. Pick the grade first, since that's what sets the density. Then enter size and thickness, whether in mm or gauge, and you'll get weight per piece plus the total in kg. Keep in mind, though, that this is a theoretical number, built from nominal density and nominal size. What actually gets billed at dispatch is the mill or weighbridge weight recorded on your MTC.

By the Relinox Technical Team, Jindal Stainless MoU Partner, working out of Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's busiest hubs for stainless steel trade.

Jindal here means Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. It's not Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL); those run carbon-steel and pipe businesses. Nor is it SAIL Salem. The density and formula values below come from standard published figures per ASTM A240 / IS 6911 and JSL's own published data. The shipped tool uses the very same constants Relinox relies on to quote material by weight.

The stainless steel weight calculator

It's an instant, no-login SS weight calculator, a grade-aware steel weight calculator built specifically for flat products. Punch in the inputs below and the weight updates live, in kilograms.

Weight per piece (kg), total weight (kg), and a unit toggle for ss sheet weight per square metre / per sq feet (kg, kg/m² and kg/sq ft) round out the output. The grade drives the density, so this one interface handles the ss 304 sheet weight calculator, the ss 316 / 316l sheet weight calculator, the ss 202 / 201 / 204Cu sheet weight calculator, the ss 430 / 409 / 410 weight calculator, and the duplex 2205 weight calculator all at once. Buyers also know it as the Jindal ss sheet weight calculator or the Jindal Stainless weight calculator, and for good reason: the material is genuine JSL stock. A CSV of the density constants used here is available on request through the RFQ form.

How to calculate SS sheet weight (formula)

For how to calculate ss sheet weight and how to calculate weight of ss sheet / plate, the flat-product ss sheet weight formula (identical to the ss plate weight formula) runs as follows:

FormFormulaNotes / units
Sheet / plate / stripL(mm) × W(mm) × T(mm) × ρ(g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000Result in kg; ρ = density from the grade table
Circle(π ÷ 4) × D(mm)² × T(mm) × ρ(g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000D = diameter in mm; result in kg
CoilWidth(mm) × running length(mm) × T(mm) × ρ(g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000Treat coil as one long flat sheet
Per areaArea(m²) × T(mm) × density factorFor 304-type (ρ 8.0): 1 m² × 1 mm ≈ 8.0 kg

The shortcut worth remembering is the ss weight calculation formula in area terms: for 304-type stainless, one square metre at one millimetre thick weighs about 8.0 kg. So kg = area (m²) × thickness (mm) × 8.0. In Hinglish trade terms, that's how you answer ss sheet ka weight kaise nikale and ss patti / patta weight kaise nikalte hai: width × length × thickness × density, divided by a million.

Worked example: 8x4 SS 304 sheet

An 8x4 ss sheet measures 1250 × 2500 mm. Taking it at 1 mm thick in SS 304, with a density of 8.0, here's the walk-through for figuring out the 8x4 ss sheet weight, or kg per sheet:

Input (grade / size / thickness)CalculationWeight (kg)
SS 304 · 8x4 (1250 × 2500 mm) · 1.0 mm1250 × 2500 × 1.0 × 8.0 ÷ 1,000,00025.0
Same, per m²3.125 m² × 1.0 mm × 8.025.0 (≈ 8.0 kg/m²)
Same, per sq ft25.0 kg ÷ 32 sq ft≈ 0.78 kg/sq ft

So a 1 mm 8x4 SS 304 sheet is about 25.0 kg. Change only the thickness or grade and the weight scales directly. For a ready lookup across sizes and thicknesses, use the ready-made SS sheet weight chart in kg rather than recomputing each row.

Circle & coil weight

For a stainless steel circle weight calculator, pick circle mode and type in the diameter. The tool applies (π ÷ 4) × D² × T × ρ ÷ 1,000,000. Take a 1000 mm diameter × 1 mm SS 304 circle and you land at roughly 6.28 kg. A ss coil weight calculator, on the other hand, treats the coil as a flat sheet and multiplies width by running length. The ss strip / patta / patti weight calculator runs on that same flat formula, just swapping in the strip width.

Chequered material is a different story. With the ss chequered / chequered plate weight calculator, the raised pattern adds extra weight on top, so don't treat the number the calculator spits out as final. Use it as a starting point and confirm the pattern allowance for SS chequered sheets when you send an RFQ. Worth checking too: circles and patta/patti strips for sizes we keep in stock.

Stainless steel density by grade

Density is the constant that drives every result, so ss density, including the common ss 304 density kg per m3 query (8000 kg/m³), is laid out below. These values come from standard published ASTM/JSL figures, and each grade links to its own page for full composition and attribute data.

Because 304 and 316 share the same density, 8.0 g/cm³, a sheet of either alloy in the same size weighs about the same. The 200-series grades (201/202/204Cu) run a touch lighter, at 7.8–7.9, and the ferritic and martensitic grades are lighter still, at 7.7.

Sheet size & gauge quick reference

Thickness works in gauge too, and the on-page helper handles the conversion, turning ss sheet size / gauge to mm chart values into mm on the fly. Here's a short gauge to mm helper:

Why Relinox: and theoretical vs weighbridge weight

Relinox holds MoU-partner status with Jindal Stainless, an authorized channel that supplies genuine JSL-melted flat products rather than re-rolled bazaar stock. Every day, quotes go out and material ships by weight from Ajmeri Gate, Delhi, with dispatch reaching across India. The calculator publishes the same density constants Relinox quotes with. That's the reason it can be trusted for sizing a job, raising a PO or estimating freight.

Jindal Stainless produces material that conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911. One honest caveat: this weight figure is theoretical, worked out from nominal density and nominal size. Rolling tolerance nudges the actual mass one way or the other, so your dispatch gets billed on the mill/weighbridge figure recorded on the mill test certificate (MTC), never on the calculator. Every dispatch comes with that MTC attached. For more on this, see mill test certificates and the Jindal MoU partnership.

This is a flat-product tool, sheet, plate, coil, strip and circle only. It won't help with an ss pipe / round bar / angle weight calculator; long and tubular products fall outside its scope.

Get the price from the weight

The calculator gives weight; rate lives on the price pages. For ss sheet weight and price / rate calculator or a ss sheet price calculator per kg, and for ss sheet rate today / price per kg, multiply the weight here by the current rate on the SS sheet price by thickness page (weight × today's rate = your cost) and confirm today's figure on RFQ, no rates are printed on this tool. For a static, downloadable table there is the SS sheet weight chart in kg; for tax codes, HSN & GST codes for SS sheet.

Know your weight, now get today's rate. Send your grade, size and thickness via the RFQ form for a quote with MTC. Looking for a ss sheet dealer / stockist / trader / supplier near me? See the Delhi dealer page and buy Jindal SS sheets (all grades & sizes), plates or coils. Grades on the verify list (317L, 304H, 301LN and others) are available against indent / on request.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the weight of a stainless steel sheet?

Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. Use the density that matches the grade. For 304-type stainless, that's roughly 8.0 g/cm³.

What is the weight of an 8x4 SS 304 sheet?

A 1250 × 2500 mm × 1 mm SS 304 sheet weighs around 25.0 kg, based on a density of 8.0. Want a different gauge? Scale the figure by thickness, or just pull the number straight from the weight chart.

What is the density of SS 304 and SS 316?

Both weigh in at roughly 8.0 g/cm³, or 8000 kg/m³. So a 304 sheet and a 316 sheet, cut to the same size, come out to almost the same weight.

Do 202/201 sheets weigh the same as 304?

Slightly less, yes. The 200-series alloys (201, 202, 204Cu) run about 7.8 to 7.9 g/cm³, while 304 sits at 8.0. A 202 sheet of the same size ends up marginally lighter.

How do I calculate SS circle weight?

The formula for weight in kilograms is (π ÷ 4) × diameter (mm)² × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. Select circle mode and enter the diameter.

Does the calculator cover plate, coil and patta/patti?

Yes. Plate runs off the same flat-product formula, coil gets computed as a long flat sheet, and strip/patta/patti draws on the strip width. Just pick the form.

Is this the actual billed weight?

No, it's a theoretical figure worked out from nominal density and size. Your dispatch gets billed on the mill/weighbridge weight shown on the MTC.

How do I convert gauge to mm?

Use the on-page gauge helper (16 gauge ≈ 1.588 mm, 18 gauge ≈ 1.270 mm, for instance), or check the full sizes and gauge-to-mm chart on the sizes page.

Can I get the price from the weight?

Yes. Multiply the weight by the current rate per kg from our indicative price pages, and confirm today's rate on RFQ. This tool doesn't print rates.

Do you supply all these grades?

Relinox carries the entire Jindal flat-product grade range as an MoU partner. A number of grades, including 317L, 304H and 301LN, ship only against indent or on request.
