Stainless Steel Sheet for Pharma & Dairy Equipment: Grades, Finishes & Sizes (India)
For pharmaceutical and dairy equipment, specify grade 316L for product-contact surfaces. Its roughly 2–3% molybdenum content makes it weld-safe (low-carbon 316L resists sensitisation) and resistant to chlorides and CIP/SIP cleaning chemicals. Use 304L for non-aggressive or structural parts instead, things like frames, clean-room cladding and dry-zone panels. Both are austenitic, food-and-pharma-contact-appropriate grades conforming to ASTM A240 / IS 6911, produced by Jindal Stainless, and each ships with a mill test certificate (MTC) for your QA dossier. Contact surfaces get finished to a smooth, cleanable BA (bright-annealed), mirror/No.8 or electropolished (EP) surface at a specified low Ra. That's what "pharma grade stainless steel sheet" means in practice: the right grade, the right finish, and the certificate. Not a separate kind of steel.
Relinox Stainless is an authorized MoU partner of Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) for stainless flat products, this excludes Jindal SAW, JSPL, and JSW, which cover carbon steel and pipes. We supply genuine JSL-melted pharmaceutical grade SS sheet for equipment fabrication, and dispatch pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point.
Where stainless steel sheet is used in pharma & dairy equipment
Stainless steel sheet for pharmaceutical equipment, and for dairy equipment, serves as the flat fabrication material for the hygienic, product-contact side of process equipment. On the pharma side, it covers reaction, storage, and mixing vessels and tanks, hoppers and mixing bowls, product-contact panels and liners, clean-room wall and ceiling cladding, trolleys, tables, racks, and GMP ducting bodies. On the dairy side, dairy equipment stainless steel goes into milk silos, chillers, pasteuriser bodies, cans, and dairy trolleys.
The equipment fabrication material is the focus here, the grade, finish and thickness a machine-maker specifies. Looking for full dairy or food-processing plant scope? See dairy & food-processing applications. Reactor and chemical process plant scope lives at chemical process plants. For general workshop work, check fabrication & engineering.

Grade 316L for product-contact pharma parts
316l stainless steel sheet for pharma is the default for product-contact surfaces. Low-carbon ss 316l pharma material resists weld sensitisation and, with its molybdenum content, holds up to chlorides and CIP/SIP cleaning agents better than 304. This is the grade to specify for vessel interiors, hoppers, contact panels and any surface that touches product. Branded buyers searching for jindal ss 316l sheet for pharma get genuine JSL-melted material with an MTC. See the full SS 316L grade page or SS 316.
Grade 304L for non-aggressive and structural parts
304l stainless steel for pharma, i.e. ss 304l equipment duty, is the workhorse for non-aggressive contact and structural parts: frames, clean-room cladding, trolleys and dry-zone panels where 316's molybdenum isn't required. Low-carbon 304L welds cleanly for hygienic fabrication. See the SS 304L grade page or SS 304.
316 vs 316L, and 304 vs 316: the pharma choice
Deciding 316 vs 316l for pharma equipment usually comes down to weld integrity. 316L's low carbon content avoids sensitisation on the welds that hygienic fabrication depends on. The 304 vs 316 for dairy or pharma question is a different one: it hinges on whether chlorides or aggressive CIP chemicals are in play. If they are, step up to 316 or 316L. For the full head-to-head comparisons, see SS 316 vs 316L and SS 304 vs 316.
Higher-temperature service (316Ti / 321, on request)
For SIP/steam duty and jacketed vessels running hot, stabilised grades 316Ti and 321 resist carbide precipitation at elevated temperature. These are supplied on request / against indent, specify the service condition on your RFQ. Budget 200-series and ferritic 430 are not hygienic-grade and are not recommended for pharma/dairy product contact.
Dairy & milk-contact equipment
Dairy equipment stainless steel, dairy grade ss sheet, is 316L or 304L depending on the contact zone. Use 316L for aggressive-clean or higher-chloride product contact and 304L for general milk-contact and structural parts. Typical uses of stainless steel for dairy, a milk tank, silo or chiller, are milk silos, chiller and pasteuriser bodies, cans and trolleys, all built for easy CIP cleaning. This page owns the dairy equipment-maker intent; for a full dairy/food-processing plant project, see the dedicated dairy & food-processing page.
Finishes & hygienic design (Ra, cleanability)
Cleanability comes down to surface finish. Hygienic stainless steel sheet and sanitary stainless steel sheet for product contact use a smooth mirror / BA / No.8 finish sheet for pharma, so residues wipe and rinse away without a fight. Ra surface roughness stainless steel pharma targets are customer-specifiable. Product-contact surfaces are commonly held to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm. The most demanding surfaces call for an electropolished / EP stainless steel sheet finish. Material ships as mill finish first, then gets polished or electropolished as job-work to match your Ra spec. Pair the right finish with crevice-free, fully-welded-and-ground hygienic detailing, and product traps disappear.
| Finish | Description | Indicative Ra note | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2B | Mill cold-rolled, smooth matte | Ra ~0.1–0.5 µm | Hidden/painted parts, ducting |
| No.4 | Satin / brushed, directional | Ra ~0.2–1.0 µm | General equipment, trolleys, cladding |
| BA (bright-annealed) | Bright, reflective, smooth | Ra ~0.1–0.5 µm | Product-contact, cleanable surfaces |
| No.8 / mirror | Highly polished, reflective | Ra ≤ ~0.1 µm | High-hygiene contact surfaces |
| EP (electropolished) | Electrochemically smoothed (job-work) | Ra ≤ ~0.4–0.8 µm target | Critical hygienic / GMP surfaces |
Ra values and finish descriptions follow published finish standards, so treat them as indicative rather than exact. For the full picture, see the SS finishes explained guide.
GMP context & hygienic-design notes
Relinox's GMP grade stainless steel, sold as a gmp ss sheet, isn't some special alloy on its own. It's austenitic 316L/304L specified to a hygienic finish, backed by MTC, and fabricated crevice-free for GMP areas. Relinox supplies the certified base material along with finishing job-work. We don't claim any GMP, 3-A or ASME-BPE certification ourselves; that certification belongs to whoever validates the finished equipment.
Sizes, thickness & gauge (sheet & plate)
Pharma and dairy fabricators typically work with 8x4 ss sheet for pharma equipment (also written 4x8 sheet) for panels and skins. For heavier jobs, they turn to ss plate for pharma vessel and dairy tank shells. Standard sizes and working thickness or gauge are set out below, with mm to gauge as a standard conversion. Coil widths are available too, for wrapping milk tanks.
| Form | Size name | mm | Common thickness mm | Gauge equiv. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | 8x4 (4x8) | 1250×2500 | 0.8–2.0 | 22–14 |
| Sheet | 4x10 | 1250×3050 | 0.8–2.0 | 22–14 |
| Sheet | 5x10 | 1500×3000 | 1.0–3.0 | 20–11 |
| Plate | Vessel / tank shell (cut-to-size) | Cut to drawing | 3–6+ | 11 & heavier |
| Coil | Tank-wrapping widths | 1250 / 1500 wide | 0.8–3.0 | 22–11 |
For ss sheet thickness for pharma vessel selection and ss sheet weight for pharma 8x4 planning, use the SS sheet weight chart and the weight calculator instead of a restated figure here. Heavy shells call for stainless steel plates. For strip and ss patta / patti for equipment fabrication, go with SS patta / strips. Hygienic screens and trolley shelves need perforated sheets (perforation is job-work). Base sheet: stainless steel sheets.
Food & pharma contact, standards & MTC
316L and 304L are the austenitic, food and pharma grade stainless steel choices for product contact. Buyers comparing food grade vs pharma grade stainless steel should note the difference is one of finish and documentation, not a different alloy, pharma work simply demands tighter Ra and full traceability. Material conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911 as produced by Jindal Stainless, this is mill conformance carried on the MTC, not a Relinox certification. For the definitional background see the food-grade stainless steel guide; for the standards themselves see ASTM A240 and IS 6911.
A mill test certificate pharma stainless buyers rely on, an MTC 316L heat certificate, ships with dispatch, so it can go straight into your QA/GMP dossier.

FAQ
Which stainless steel is used in pharmaceutical equipment?
316L handles product-contact surfaces. It carries molybdenum, welds safely in the low-carbon 316L form, and stands up to CIP chemicals and chlorides. For non-aggressive or structural parts, go with 304L. Full details are on the SS 316L grade page.
What is pharma-grade stainless steel?
It is austenitic 316L or 304L, supplied to ASTM A240 / IS 6911 with a mill test certificate, and finished to a smooth, cleanable surface. Really, this is a material specification, grade, finish, and MTC, not a separate kind of steel.
Is 316L better than 304L for pharma and dairy?
316L works in about 2–3% molybdenum, which sharpens resistance to chlorides and the chemicals used in CIP cleaning. Pick it for product contact and aggressive cleaning cycles. Where those conditions aren't a factor, 304L is the better fit. For a fuller breakdown, see the SS 316 vs 316L comparison.
What surface finish (Ra) is required for pharma equipment?
Product-contact surfaces get a smooth BA/mirror or electropolished finish to a specified Ra, usually Ra ≤ 0.8 µm. Check your Ra target on the RFQ. Material ships as mill finish and gets polished as job-work. See SS finishes explained.
Which stainless steel is used for dairy equipment?
