IS 6911: Indian Standard for Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet & Strip (Grades, Designations & Scope)

IS 6911 is the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification for stainless steel plate, sheet and strip. It's the Indian Standard that sets, for each grade, the chemical composition limits, the mechanical property requirements and the delivery/heat-treatment condition for these flat products. Every grade carries an Indian (BIS) grade designation that maps to the familiar 300/400-series and UNS numbers.

So if you work with is 6911 stainless steel, this is the document your material gets checked against. Its nearest US equivalent for flat products is ASTM A240. What IS 6911 covers (scope, specification & requirements)

The IS 6911 scope covers flat-rolled stainless steel, plate, sheet and strip, both cold-rolled and hot-rolled. As a full IS 6911 specification, the IS 6911 standard sets, per grade:

• Chemical composition limits, the ladle/heat analysis every heat must meet;
• Mechanical property requirements, a minimum tensile strength, a minimum yield strength and a minimum elongation, plus a maximum hardness;
• The required delivery / heat-treatment (annealed) condition and the testing basis.

Grades under IS 6911 (BIS designation ↔ ASTM/UNS)

IS 6911 grade list below maps the grades covered by the standard to their ASTM/UNS number, family and Jindal-supplied position. IS 6911 assigns each grade an Indian (BIS) grade designation, an X-prefixed Cr-Ni string (for example the IS 6911 designation for 304 is a chromium-nickel 18-10 form), cross-referenced to the internationally-known grades below. IS 6911 / Jindal grade coverage: these grades are supplied against indent, on request, not guaranteed ex-stock. Grades on the verify list, 317L, 304H, 301/301LN, 444, duplex 2304 and super duplex 2507, fall into that same category. ASTM/UNS and type designations themselves are standard published values.

IS 6911 chemical composition & mechanical basis

IS 6911 sets, for each grade, a chemical composition band and a matching set of mechanical properties. This is the composition table for the flat-product grades most often specified. In the 200-series grades (201/202), manganese and nitrogen take the place of part of the nickel. IS 6911 mechanical properties are minimums in the annealed condition: minimum tensile strength, minimum yield strength, minimum elongation, and a maximum hardness. Values are the standard published minima/maxima; the heat-specific analysis for your material is confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC) produced by Jindal Stainless.

IS 6911 dimensions & tolerances (via IS 1730)

IS 6911 lays out the grades and their properties, but it stops short of dimensional detail.
