Jindal SS 439, 441 & 436 Sheet: Stabilized Ferritic Stainless Grades (Composition, Properties, Price & Supply)
SS 439, 441 and 436 form the stabilized "utility" ferritic stainless grades: titanium- and/or niobium-stabilized 17–18% chromium ferritics that improve on basic 430 in weldability, formability and mild-corrosion resistance. Take SS 439 (UNS S43035, EN 1.4510): a Ti-stabilized 17–18Cr grade built for hot-water tanks, heat exchangers and sinks. SS 441 (UNS S44100, EN 1.4509) is the automotive-exhaust ferritic, dual-stabilized with Ti and Nb at 18Cr, and it resists high-temperature oxidation and thermal fatigue well. SS 436 (UNS S43600) carries about 1% molybdenum, which gives it better corrosion resistance than 430 in automotive trim and appliance panels. All three are essentially nickel-free, and, being ferritic, they're magnetic in every condition. None qualifies as a chloride or marine grade. For wet, coastal or aggressive-corrosive duty, step up to 304 or 316.
This page lays out the full composition, mechanical and physical data for these utility ferritic stainless grades. It also covers honest guidance on magnetism, corrosion and heat performance, plus forms, finishes (including BA), an indicative rate and how to buy genuine Jindal material.
Relinox Stainless holds MoU-partner status with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. It isn't tied to Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it has no connection to SAIL Salem either. SS 439, 441 and 436 sit within the core verified-Jindal grade set. Because of that, what we supply is genuine JSL-melted jindal ss 441 sheet, jindal 439 stainless and jindal 436 sheet, along with coil, patta and circle, all backed by mill test certificates. None of it is re-rolled bazaar stock.

What are SS 439, 441 & 436: the stabilized utility ferritics?
The 17–18% chromium ferritics known as utility ferritic stainless grades have been stabilized. Small, deliberate additions of titanium and/or niobium tie up carbon and nitrogen, so the steel welds and forms better and resists intergranular attack, unlike basic 430. That's what a stabilized ferritic stainless actually is: a titanium stabilized ferritic (439), a niobium stabilized ferritic or a dual Ti+Nb version (441), or a molybdenum-bearing stabilized ferritic (436). All three are essentially nickel-free. All three are magnetic. And all three sit above basic 430 and below the 18Cr-2Mo grade 444 in the ferritic family. SS 439 is the general weldable ferritic. SS 441 is the high-temperature exhaust grade. SS 436 adds molybdenum for a step up in corrosion resistance. Full designations, composition, properties and supply follow.
The three grades at a glance: 4xx ferritic grades chart
This 4xx ferritic grades chart lays out each grade fast, the feature, the typical use, the nearest sibling, before you hit the detailed tables. Values follow the standard published designations per ASTM A240, along with the matching EN grades.
| Grade | UNS / EN | Key feature | Typical use | Nearest sibling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SS 439 | S43035 / EN 1.4510 (X3CrTi17) | Ti-stabilized 17–18Cr, weldable, formable | Hot-water tanks, heat exchangers, sinks, appliances | 430 (below), 444 (above) |
| SS 441 | S44100 / EN 1.4509 (X2CrTiNb18) | Ti+Nb dual-stabilized 18Cr, high-temp strength | Automotive exhaust manifolds & systems | 439 / 409M |
| SS 436 | S43600 (~1% Mo) | Nb/Ti-stabilized, molybdenum-bearing | Automotive trim, decorative & appliance panels | 430 / 444 |
SS 439 (UNS S43035: Ti-stabilized 17–18Cr)
SS 439 (also grade 439, type 439, 439 SS, UNS S43035, or EN 1.4510) is a titanium-stabilized ferritic with 17–18% chromium. The titanium locks up carbon, so the grade welds cleanly and holds its shape well, giving it far better weldability and mild-corrosion resistance than basic 430. It's the go-to 439 hot water tank grade, found in hot-water cylinders and tanks, heat exchangers, kitchen sinks, and appliance parts. As SS 439 sheet, it stands as the general-purpose stabilized ferritic in the family.
SS 441 (UNS S44100: Ti+Nb dual-stabilized 18Cr)
SS 441, also called grade 441, type 441, 441 ss, UNS S44100 or EN 1.4509, is a titanium-and-niobium dual-stabilized 18% chromium ferritic. It's the industry's automotive exhaust stainless. Dual stabilization holds strength and resists creep and thermal fatigue at high temperature. That's why 441 exhaust grade material shows up in exhaust manifolds, downpipes and hot-end systems. Known as ss 441 sheet, it stands as the canonical high-temperature utility ferritic and the primary entity of this page.
SS 436 (UNS S43600: ~1% Mo)
SS 436 goes by several names: grade 436, type 436, 436 SS, or UNS S43600. It's a ferritic stainless steel stabilized with niobium and titanium, running around 17% chromium, and it carries roughly 1% molybdenum. That molybdenum is what pushes its pitting and general corrosion resistance past 430. As a result, SS 436 sheet gets used in automotive trim and on decorative or appliance panels where you need better corrosion resistance than plain 430 offers, but don't want the cost or complexity of switching to an austenitic grade.
Chemical composition (439 / 441 / 436)
The combined 439 chemical composition, 441 chemical composition and 436 chemical composition below use the standard published limits per ASTM A240 and the corresponding EN grade data, see the ASTM A240 standard and the IS 6911 standard. The defining points of this grade composition % are the 17–18% chromium in all three, the titanium (439), titanium-plus-niobium (441) and niobium (436) stabilization that ties up carbon for weldability, and the ~1% molybdenum unique to 436 that raises its corrosion resistance.
| Element (weight %) | 439 (S43035) | 441 (S44100) | 436 (S43600) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.030 | ≤ 0.030 | ≤ 0.12 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 | ≤ 1.00 | ≤ 1.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 | ≤ 1.00 | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 | ≤ 0.040 | ≤ 0.040 |
| Sulphur (S) | ≤ 0.030 | ≤ 0.030 | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 17.0–19.0 | 17.5–18.5 | 16.0–18.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.50 | ≤ 0.50 | — |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | — | — | 0.75–1.25 |
| Stabiliser | Ti-stabilized (Ti 0.20 + 4(C+N), 1.10 max) | Ti + Nb dual-stabilized | Nb/Ti-stabilized (Nb 5×C to 0.70) |
ASTM A240/EN specify the composition values as a percentage by weight. The exact heat analysis for your material gets confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC), which ships with the material and is shared against your indent.
Mechanical & physical properties
The 439 mechanical properties, 441 mechanical properties and 436 mechanical properties below are annealed-condition minimums per ASTM A240 and EN published data: the tensile, yield, elongation and hardness values you specify against your indent. These grades are ferritic, so they can't be hardened by heat treatment. That means the annealed figures are the ones you actually work with.
| Grade (annealed) | UTS min (MPa) | 0.2% YS min (MPa) | Elongation min (%) | Hardness (annealed, max) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 439 (S43035) | ≥ 415 | ≥ 205 | ≥ 22 | ≤ 89 HRB |
| 441 (S44100) | ≥ 415 | ≥ 205 | ≥ 18 | ≤ 96 HRB |
| 436 (S43600) | ≥ 450 | ≥ 275 | ≥ 22 | ≤ 89 HRB |
Ferritic through and through, all three keep thermal expansion low and shrug off oxidation at high temperatures. That's the real reason 439 and 441 end up in hot-water and exhaust applications so often.
As for the numbers themselves, check the physical table: 439 physical properties, 441 density, 436 melting point, and 439 hardness cover the constants, along with the question everyone asks sooner or later, stainless magnetic or not.
| Physical property | 439 / 441 / 436 value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.70 g/cm³ |
| Melting range | ≈ 1425–1510 °C |
| Magnetic response | Yes, magnetic in annealed and all conditions |
| Thermal expansion | Low (ferritic) |
| High-temperature oxidation resistance | Good, 439/441 favoured for exhaust and hot-water service |
| Hardness (annealed) | ≈ ≤ 88–96 HRB per grade |
Are they magnetic? Corrosion, heat & rust resistance
On the is 439 magnetic, is 441 magnetic and is 436 magnetic questions: yes, ferritic stainless is ferromagnetic in every condition, so a magnet sticks firmly to all three grades, unlike the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades such as 304. On 439 corrosion resistance, 441 corrosion resistance and 436 corrosion resistance, be realistic. Stabilization and the higher chromium (plus the ~1% molybdenum in 436) give these grades better weldability, formability and oxidation resistance than basic 430, and they resist mild atmospheric, hot-water and high-temperature service well. But on the common does it rust question: they are not chloride or marine grades, in salt, coastal or aggressive wet service an uncoated ferritic surface can stain or pit, so for those duties step up to 304 or 316.
In short, these stabilized ferritics come in roughly equal to or slightly better than 430 for wet corrosion, though they still fall short of 304. Where they really earn their keep is high-temperature oxidation and thermal-fatigue resistance. That's exactly why 441 ends up as the exhaust-grade choice, and why 439 gets used in hot-water tanks.
439 / 441 / 436 vs 430, 444 & nearby grades: quick guidance
For the nearby-grade questions, 439 vs 430, 436 vs 430, 441 vs 439, 439 vs 304 and 441 vs 409, here is the short steer. Basic 430 is the economical 16Cr ferritic for mild, indoor and decorative service; 439 and 436 are the stabilized step-up (more weldable, 436 more corrosion-resistant); 441 is the dual-stabilized high-temperature exhaust ferritic; 444 is the 18Cr-2Mo top ferritic; and 304 is the nickel-bearing austenitic you pick for food, wet and corrosive duty. For the full entities and side-by-sides, see the basic 16Cr ferritic, SS 430, the Mo-bearing 444 ferritic, the utility ferritic 409 / 409M and the 304 austenitic step-up, those pages own their grade queries.
Applications
These utility ferritics prove their worth wherever stabilization, high-temperature performance or a molybdenum-boosted corrosion step over 430 comes into play, all while keeping ferritic economy.
- SS 439, hot-water tanks and cylinders, heat exchangers, kitchen sinks and appliance parts. See water storage tanks and kitchen equipment.
- SS 441, automotive exhaust stainless: manifolds, downpipes, hot-end exhaust systems and other high-temperature parts. See automotive / railway exhaust use.
- SS 436, automotive trim and decorative or appliance panels needing better corrosion resistance than 430.
On the food-contact and wet-service question: these grades work fine for dry, decorative and high-temperature parts. For wet, acidic or heavy-duty food processing, though, 304 is the better choice. Match the grade to the job.

Frequently asked questions
What are SS 439, 441 and 436 stainless steel?
They're stabilized ("utility") ferritic stainless grades running 17-18% chromium: 439 (UNS S43035) gets stabilized with titanium, 441 (UNS S44100) carries both titanium and niobium, and 436 (UNS S43600) adds roughly 1% molybdenum. All three beat basic 430 on weldability, formability and corrosion resistance.
Are 439, 441 and 436 magnetic?
All three are ferritic, so they stay magnetic no matter how they're treated, a magnet grabs them right away. Austenitic grades like 304, by contrast, are basically non-magnetic.
Do these ferritic grades rust?
They handle mild atmospheric, hot-water and high-temperature service better than 430, but they're not chloride or marine grades. In salt, coastal or aggressive wet exposure they can stain or pit, so step up to 304 or 316 there.
What is the composition of 439 / 441 / 436?
All ferritics here run high in chromium, sitting at 17–18% Cr. 439 and 441 get stabilized with titanium and niobium, while 436 throws in roughly 1% molybdenum. For the exact element-by-element limits, check the composition table against ASTM A240 and the published EN data.
Which grade is used for automotive exhaust?
SS 441 (and 439) are dual-stabilized 18Cr ferritics with strong resistance to high-temperature oxidation and thermal fatigue. That's exactly why 441 has become the standard automotive-exhaust ferritic for manifolds and hot-end systems.
How do 439/441/436 compare with 430 and 444?
They sit above basic 430, which is stabilized and more weldable and more corrosion-resistant, and below 444 (18Cr-2Mo). Check the SS 430 and SS 444 grade pages for the full side-by-side comparison.
What are 439/441/436 used for?
439: hot-water tanks, heat exchangers, sinks and appliances. 441: automotive exhaust systems and high-temperature parts. 436: automotive trim and decorative or appliance panels needing better corrosion resistance than 430.
What is the price of SS 441/439/436 sheet per kg?
The rate moves with chromium, molybdenum and stabilizer content, along with LME, finish, thickness, quantity and freight. As stabilized ferritics, they sit above 430 but below the austenitics. Check the indicative price list, and confirm today's rate on the RFQ form.
