Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Sheet: Jindal Supplier & Distributor (India)

Duplex 2205 stainless steel sheet, the workhorse of the duplex stainless steel sheet family, is a nitrogen-alloyed ferritic-austenitic grade with a roughly 50/50 microstructure. It carries the designation UNS S32205 (dual-certified with the legacy S31803) and EN 1.4462 (X2CrNiMoN22-5-3). In the trade, people call it "22-5-3" duplex, a nod to its 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo makeup. So what is duplex stainless steel, in one line? A two-phase stainless that pairs roughly double the yield strength of austenitic 304/316 with markedly higher resistance to pitting, crevice attack and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Relinox works as a jindal duplex stainless steel sheet supplier, an authorized Jindal Stainless MoU-partner channel that supplies genuine JSL-melted jindal duplex 2205 sheet complete with mill test certificates (MTC). Distribution runs pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. The composition and property figures below are standard published values per ASTM A240 (UNS S32205) and IS 6911, the same figures you'd find referenced on the mill test certificate.

By the Relinox Technical Team · values per ASTM A240 (UNS S32205) / IS 6911 and published Jindal Stainless data for 2205.

Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) is what "Jindal" refers to in this context, covering stainless flat products only. Relinox holds an authorized MoU partnership with JSL. That's a separate company from Jindal SAW, JSPL and JSW Steel, which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it's also distinct from SAIL Salem.

What is duplex 2205 stainless steel?

Duplex 2205, also called 2205 duplex or Jindal duplex sheet, is the standard-grade duplex stainless steel. It's a nitrogen-alloyed material with a microstructure that splits roughly fifty-fifty between ferrite and austenite. That two-phase makeup is the whole point. Ferrite brings high strength and resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Austenite holds onto toughness and general corrosion resistance. Nitrogen, added into the mix, pushes pitting resistance and strength even higher. What you end up with is a grade offering about twice the 0.2% yield strength of 304/316, along with a much higher PREN (pitting resistance equivalent number).

Duplex 2205 sits under the duplex (ferritic-austenitic) family, itself a branch of stainless steel, and it's the standard duplex workhorse offered in sheet, plate and coil forms. Its neighbours in this lineup are the leaner duplex 2304 and the more heavily alloyed super duplex 2507. In the Hindi market, buyers often ask for duplex 2205 patta, duplex patti or the 8x4 duplex sheet. These names all point to the same grade, listed as an 8x4 or 4x8 sheet on the order.

Duplex 2205 chemical composition

The chromium content sits near 22%, molybdenum near 3%, and there's a deliberate nitrogen addition on top of that, together these define the 22-5-3 duplex name and make up the 2205 chemical composition shown below, taken from ASTM A240 for UNS S32205.

ElementMin %Max %
Carbon (C)—0.030
Chromium (Cr)22.023.0
Nickel (Ni)4.56.5
Molybdenum (Mo)3.03.5
Nitrogen (N)0.140.20
Manganese (Mn)—2.00
Silicon (Si)—1.00
Phosphorus (P)—0.030
Sulphur (S)—0.020
Iron (Fe)Balance

What makes this a 2205 certificate rather than an austenitic one is the balance of ~22Cr and ~3Mo with only 4.5–6.5% nickel and a controlled 0.14–0.20% nitrogen. The low nickel keeps roughly half the structure ferritic (hence the strength and the magnetic response), while chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen together drive the pitting resistance.

Duplex 2205 mechanical & physical properties

Duplex 2205 mechanical properties shown below are annealed sheet minima per ASTM A240; the physical constants are the standard published values for duplex. These cover what buyers usually ask for by name: duplex 2205 yield strength and duplex 2205 hardness.

Mechanical properties (annealed sheet)

Duplex 2205 density~7.80–7.82 (≈7,800–7,820)g/cm³ (kg/m³)
PREN (pitting index)~34–35 (against ~24 for 316L)—
Magnetic responseMagnetic (ferrite phase present)—
Service-temp noteAvoid prolonged 300–1000 °C (sigma-phase embrittlement)—

So the duplex 2205 density is about 7.80–7.82 g/cm³ (≈7,800–7,820 kg/m³), slightly lighter than austenitic 304/316. To turn that into duplex 2205 sheet weight / weight per sheet, use our SS sheet weight chart or the stainless steel weight calculator at density ~7.8. Note the yield near 450 MPa is roughly double a 304/316 sheet, the practical benefit is thinner sections at equal load.

Corrosion resistance: why choose duplex 2205

Corrosion resistance is the whole reason 2205 exists. Roughly 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and controlled nitrogen add up to a PREN of about 34–35, well above 316L's ~24. That gap is why duplex 2205 corrosion resistance holds up against pitting and crevice attack in chloride, brackish, marine and chemical service, conditions where 316L starts to struggle. The high-ferrite structure brings the trait duplex grades are really valued for: strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking (SCC). That's a failure mode that can hit austenitic 304 and 316 in hot chloride environments.

Duplex 2205 pays for its corrosion resistance with a narrow temperature window. Hold it between 300 and 1000 °C for too long and sigma-phase forms, along with 475 °C embrittlement, both of which cut toughness. That's why it belongs in ambient-to-warm chloride and acid environments, not inside a furnace. For high-temperature service, reach for SS 310S or SS 304H instead.

Duplex stainless steel family: 2205, lean 2304 & super duplex 2507

Within the duplex stainless steel grades, 2205 is the standard workhorse. The family runs from the leaner, lower-alloy duplex 2304 sheet up to the heavily alloyed super duplex 2507 sheet. Ask about duplex vs super duplex, or what is the difference between duplex and super duplex, and the short answer comes down to alloy content and PREN.

GradeUNSPREN (approx.)Yield (min)Availability

Duplex 2205 (standard)S32205 / S31803~34–35450 MPaSupplied, genuine JSL, MTC
Super duplex 2507S32750~40+~550 MPaAgainst indent / on request
316L (austenitic, for reference)S31603~24~205 MPaStocked grade, see grade page

Read it as a ladder of chloride resistance: lean duplex 2304 for milder chloride duty at lower cost; duplex 2205 as the standard workhorse for aggressive chloride and marine service; super duplex 2507 (PREN ≥40) for seawater and the harshest chlorides. Both 2304 and 2507 are supplied against indent / on request rather than held as floor stock, confirm availability and quantity via the RFQ form. See the full grades hub for all Jindal stainless steel grades.

When to choose duplex 2205 over 316L / 316 / 304

Duplex 2205 versus 316 and duplex 2205 versus 304 really comes down to two things: strength and chloride resistance. Go with duplex 2205 when you need roughly double the yield strength and a higher PREN (about 35 versus about 24) than 316L. That's typically the call for high-chloride, marine, or SCC-prone service, and the extra strength lets you spec thinner, lighter sections too. For general or milder service, 304, 316, or 316L make more sense, since formability and easy welding matter more there than raw strength. Duplex, by contrast, demands duplex-specific weld controls. As for duplex 2205 versus super duplex, only step up to 2507 when seawater or the harshest chlorides are driving the decision.

This page doesn't repeat the head-to-head, for the full breakdown see duplex 2205 vs 316L compared. The nearby austenitic Mo grades sit at SS 316L and SS 317L.

Forms, sizes & finishes of Jindal duplex 2205

Relinox supplies and cuts Jindal duplex 2205 across the standard Indian flat-product range. Sheet is the primary form here, with 2205 duplex plate and duplex 2205 coil filling out the rest. The 8x4 duplex sheet, at 1250×2500 mm, is the workhorse size. We also cut 4x10 and 5×10 sheets to your list, sized in mm plus gauge. And there's duplex 2205 patta / patti, or strip, besides.

For the duplex 2205 sheet thickness / gauge / size chart, thickness tolerance follows ASTM A240 / IS 6911; exact stocked sizes and thickness get confirmed on RFQ. Weight per sheet is covered separately in the SS sheet weight chart.

Applications of duplex 2205 sheet

Duplex 2205 applications and duplex 2205 uses cluster wherever high chloride or SCC risk meets a need for strength. High PREN and SCC resistance make CR 2205 a standard choice across process and marine industries.

  • Chemical & process plants, pressure vessels, reactors, tanks and piping in chloride- and acid-bearing service.

Effluent, desalination and water treatment, desalination equipment, effluent systems and brackish or seawater handling, wherever chloride SCC is the governing concern.

Oil and gas, pulp and paper, structural work, flowlines and process gear, digester and bleaching equipment, and high-strength structural components, where thinner, stronger sections mean less weight to carry.

For the primary process route 2205 feeds into, see chemical process plants. When to choose 2205: specify it when chloride pitting, crevice attack or stress-corrosion cracking threaten a 316L design. Or when the extra strength lets you down-gauge.

Duplex 2205 price in India (indicative)

This page carries a dated, indicative rate instead of a quoted figure. Looking for the duplex 2205 sheet price, duplex stainless steel price per kg, 2205 duplex sheet price, rate today or price list? Request the current indicative rate per kg through an RFQ. We don't state a fixed figure here. 2205 is a higher-alloy duplex grade, so it typically carries a premium over 304/316, in step with the nickel and molybdenum it contains. For reference, the today's indicative duplex 2205 rate hub lays out the indicative rate structure.

Nickel and molybdenum, LME movements, the alloy premium, thickness, finish, quantity and freight all move the rate. So today's 2205 rate gets confirmed only on RFQ. For duplex 2205 sheet HSN code / GST, check the SS HSN codes & GST reference. Send your requirement (grade, size, finish and quantity) through the RFQ form; we'll confirm today's indicative rate and MTC on reply.

Frequently asked questions

What is duplex 2205 stainless steel?

Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen-alloyed ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless grade (UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462), running roughly 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo-N. Its yield strength sits at about double that of 304/316, and it holds up far better against chloride corrosion. The grade pairs high strength with strong resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking, per ASTM A240.

Is duplex 2205 magnetic?

Duplex 2205 is indeed magnetic. Roughly half its structure is ferrite, unlike the non-magnetic austenitic 304/316. A magnet won't confirm the grade, though. For that, rely on the mill test certificate.

What is the chemical composition of 2205 duplex?

Per ASTM A240 (UNS S32205): chromium runs 22.0–23.0%, nickel 4.5–6.5%, molybdenum 3.0–3.5%, nitrogen 0.14–0.20%, carbon capped at 0.030%. Manganese stays under 2.0%, silicon under 1.0%. Phosphorus is limited to 0.030% and sulphur to 0.020%. Iron makes up the balance.

Duplex 2205 vs 316L, which is better?

Duplex 2205 offers much higher strength and a higher PREN (about 35 versus about 24) for chloride, marine, and SCC-prone service; 316L, on the other hand, forms and welds more easily for milder duty. For the full comparison, see the duplex 2205 vs 316L guide.

What is the difference between duplex and super duplex?

Super duplex (e.g. 2507, PREN ≥40) carries heavier alloying for seawater and the harshest chloride conditions. Duplex 2205 is the standard workhorse, sitting at PREN ~34–35. Both super duplex 2507 and lean duplex 2304 can be sourced against indent.

What is the PREN of duplex 2205?

Duplex 2205 has a PREN (pitting resistance equivalent number) of about 34–35. 316L sits at roughly 24. That gap comes down to composition: around 22% chromium, about 3% molybdenum, and carefully controlled nitrogen. It's why 2205 holds up against chloride pitting and crevice attack far better than 316.

Do you supply genuine Jindal duplex 2205?

Yes. Relinox supplies genuine JSL-melted duplex 2205 as a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, and every batch comes with a mill test certificate. Just request an MTC sample through the RFQ form.

What sizes and thicknesses of duplex 2205 sheet are available?

Standard sizes run 1250×2500 (8x4), 1250×3050 (4x10) and 1500×3000 (5×10) mm, with thickness given in mm plus gauge, held to ASTM A240 / IS 6911 tolerance. The exact stocked range gets confirmed on RFQ.

What is the price of duplex 2205 per kg?

Duplex 2205 costs more than 304/316 because it carries more nickel and molybdenum. We don't quote a fixed number for it; instead we share an indicative rate per kg on RFQ. Check the prices hub for that indicative structure, then confirm today's rate on RFQ.

What is the HSN code / GST for duplex 2205 sheet?

Duplex 2205 sheet falls under the stainless steel flat-product HSN classification. Check our SS HSN codes & GST reference for the applicable code and rate, and confirm it on your GST invoice.

Which applications use duplex 2205?

Duplex 2205 shows up in chemical and process plants, effluent treatment and desalination, tanks and pressure vessels, oil and gas, and pulp and paper, anywhere high chloride levels, SCC risk, or a need for extra strength calls the shots.

Do you supply duplex 2205 pan-India?

Yes, pan-India dispatch from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi base. GST invoice included, and freight terms are stated plainly. Share your destination and requirement via the RFQ form and we'll send a delivered quote with MTC.
