Stainless Steel Sheet for Hospital & Medical Furniture: Grade, Finish & Thickness Guide

Which stainless steel is used for hospital furniture? For most hospital and medical furniture (beds, instrument and dressing trolleys, bedside lockers, clinic cabinets), the standard choice is SS 304 (AISI 304 / UNS S30400), finished to No.4 or hairline. Scrub sinks and anything wiped down regularly with chlorine-based disinfectants call for something tougher: SS 316/316L (UNS S31603). SS 430 (UNS S43000) works fine for certain dry panels and cabinets, while 202 / Jindal J4 should be reserved for dry, painted or covered parts, or non-critical applications only. So when someone asks "hospital furniture ke liye kaunsa steel use hota hai," or specifically "hospital bed ke liye kaunsa steel," the answer doesn't change much: 304 covers the default cases, and 316L takes over wherever chlorides and moisture are part of the picture.

This page is about the stainless steel sheet for hospital and medical furniture, the raw material, not the furniture. Whether you call it stainless steel sheet for medical furniture or ss sheet for hospital and medical furniture, the grade logic is the same. Relinox Stainless is an authorized MoU partner of Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) for stainless flat products, not Jindal SAW / JSW / JSPL, and not SAIL Salem. We supply genuine JSL-melted sheet, coil, patta and perforated sheet to the fabricators and OEMs who build hospital furniture; we do not make hospital furniture or medical devices.

Why stainless steel for hospital furniture?

Is stainless steel hygienic? For the practical concerns hospitals have, yes. A stainless surface stays smooth and non-porous, so it's easy to clean, and it holds up under the repeated wipe-downs and disinfectant cycles that ward and OT furniture goes through every shift. Chromium in the steel forms a thin passive oxide film that re-forms after cleaning. Nickel, present in 304 and 316L, keeps the steel austenitic and tough. Molybdenum, found in 316L, adds resistance to chloride pitting.

We don't claim stainless steel is antibacterial or antimicrobial. In hospitals, its real value is cleanability and durability, not some self-disinfecting trick, so picking the right grade and finish really comes down to how the surface holds up under your cleaning regime.

Which grade for which hospital furniture?

The requirement map below forms the core of the stainless steel sheet for hospital furniture decision: grade, alternative, and finish by furniture type. It follows standard stainless metallurgy guidance, and the composition basis comes from ASTM A240.

The best grade of stainless steel for hospital furniture is 304 for most parts. Wet zones and chloride-exposed spots call for 316L instead. Full grade data lives on the SS 304 sheet properties page.

Beds, lockers & ward furniture

Hospital bed stainless steel grade: go with SS 304 sheet for hospital furniture panels, head/foot boards and bases; a hospital bed ss sheet usually comes in No.4 or hairline so everyday scuffs don't show. For the ss sheet for hospital bed frame, fabricators often start from strip instead, SS patta/strips cut from the same grade (in the trade people just ask for "ss patti for hospital bed frame"). Bed rails made from tube fall outside our scope, since we only supply flat products. A bedside locker ss sheet is typically 304 skin, while an ss 430 sheet for hospital cabinets and dry locker interiors makes a reasonable lower-cost choice. 430 is ferritic and magnetic, though, with less corrosion resistance than 304 (SS 430 grade).

Instrument, dressing & medicine trolleys

Medical trolley ss grade: 304 is the default ss sheet for instrument trolley tops, shelves and drawers, and it's also the standard dressing trolley ss sheet. The crash cart stainless steel body and the medicine trolley stainless steel cabinet are 304 as well, though 430 works fine for dry internal drawers. If trolleys get wiped down daily with chlorine-based disinfectants, move up to 316L instead. For drain-through trays, the ss perforated sheet for hospital trolley shelves is perforated on Jindal sheet as job-work, see perforated stainless steel sheets. As for the ss sheet for IV stand, that covers only the base and tray. The pole itself is tube, so it falls outside our scope.

Scrub sinks & wet/chloride zones

Scrub sinks, sluice rooms and wash areas face water, soap and chloride-bearing disinfectants all day long. That's why SS 316L sheet for scrub sink bowls and splash-backs are worth specifying: under ASTM A240, 316L carries 2.00–3.00% molybdenum, which improves resistance to chloride pitting, and its low carbon content (0.030% max) suits welded sink assemblies. In hospital wet zones, ss 316l sheet for hospital areas are the safer pick. Choose 304 instead for a ss sheet for scrub sink, and strict rinsing and drying after hypochlorite cleaning becomes essential. Looking at 304 vs 316 for hospital furniture more broadly, 304 suits dry and high-touch furniture, while 316/316L belongs in wet, chloride-heavy zones. The deeper comparison sits in SS 304 vs 316, and grade data appears in 316L for scrub sinks & wet zones.

OT wall & door panels

Stainless steel for operation theatre panels usually means 304 in hairline or No.4; 316L becomes an option where the OT cleaning regime is aggressive. The same holds for ss sheet for operation theatre panels in modular systems, ss sheet for modular OT panels, and ss sheet for OT doors. 304 hairline is the common choice there too. Low-carbon grades suit welded door leaves, and mirror finish is best avoided on touch surfaces. General (non-OT) lobby and wall cladding is covered on wall cladding & interiors.

Clinic, pharmacy & lab furniture

SS sheet for clinic furniture (examination couches, cabinets, dressing tables) is 304 by default. Dry cabinet carcasses call for 430, and 2B covers hidden parts. The same rule applies to an ss sheet for pharmacy rack or ss sheet for lab table tops, though benches exposed to chemicals need 316L instead. Pharma process equipment is a different category: vessels, reactors, and clean-room process kit belong on pharma & dairy equipment. Looking for an ss sheet for hospital kitchen or ss sheet for pantry trolley? Check kitchen equipment. General home and office furniture sits on furniture & modular kitchens.

Is 202 or J4 OK for hospital furniture? (304 vs 202 for hospital furniture)

Honest verdict on 304 vs 202 hospital furniture choices: an ss 202 sheet for hospital furniture, or Jindal J4 for hospital furniture, is a cost option only for dry, painted/covered or non-critical parts such as hidden brackets or internal frames. 200-series grades replace much of the nickel with manganese, so they resist chloride and hypochlorite cleaning less well than 304. Does 202 rust in hospitals? On wet, chloride-exposed or frequently disinfected surfaces it is more prone to staining and pitting than 304, which is why "304 ya 202, hospital furniture ke liye kaunsa achha" has a clear answer for visible and high-touch parts: 304.

Which finish for hospital furniture?

On high-touch surfaces, go with No.4 or hairline. The directional brushed texture hides fine scratches and wipe marks well. A hairline finish ss sheet for hospital OT panels and trolley tops is the most common specification you'll see. Mirror finish is a different story: it shows every fingerprint and scratch, which is exactly why it has no place on touch surfaces when weighing No.4 vs mirror hospital surfaces.

FinishLookScratch / fingerprint visibilityHospital use

Finish designations follow ASTM A480. For more, see No.4, hairline & 2B finishes explained and 2B vs BA.

Thickness, gauge & sheet sizes

So what's the right thickness of ss sheet for hospital bed panels, or the thickness of ss sheet for trolley tops? The table below reflects typical trade practice, but your design drawings and load requirements should always win out.

PartTypical thickness (mm)Approx. gauge
Cabinet / locker skins, drawer fronts0.8–1.022–20 g
Trolley tops & shelves1.0–1.220–18 g
Bed panels, OT panels1.0–1.520–16 g
Scrub-sink bowls / tops1.2–1.518–16 g
Load brackets, bases2.0–3.0 and above14 g and up / plate

In trade terms, that's 20 gauge ss sheet for hospital furniture (about 0.9–1.0 mm) for skins and lockers, 18 gauge ss sheet for hospital furniture (about 1.2 mm) for trolley tops, and 16 gauge ss sheet for hospital furniture (about 1.5 mm) for heavier panels and sink tops. Thickness tolerances follow IS 1730, the dimensional standard used alongside IS 6911. You'll find the gauge-to-mm equivalences on SS sheet sizes & thickness.

Standard sizes run 1250×2500 mm (the 8x4 ss sheet for hospital furniture), 1250×3050 mm (4x10) and 1500×3000 mm (5x10). There's also coil for high-volume OEM lines, plus plate for heavy bases. Need the weight? Check the SS sheet weight chart or run it through the stainless steel weight calculator.

FAQ

Which stainless steel is best for hospital furniture?

Go with 304 for most beds, trolleys, lockers and clinic furniture. For scrub sinks and chlorine-heavy wet zones, you'll want 316 or 316L instead.

Is SS 202 or J4 good for hospital furniture? (304 ya 202?)

Only as a cost option for parts that stay dry, get painted or covered, or aren't critical. 202 and J4 don't hold up as well as 304 against chloride and hypochlorite cleaning, so stick with 304 for visible and high-touch parts.

304 or 316L for medical trolleys?

304 is the standard choice. Go with 316L, though, when trolleys get cleaned regularly with chlorine-based disinfectants or sit in wet areas.

Is there a "hospital grade stainless steel sheet" or "medical grade stainless steel sheet"?

Not as a single grade name for furniture; buyers usually mean 304 or 316L. Implant and medical-device grades sit in a different category altogether. Relinox supplies sheet to standard grades (ASTM A240 / IS 6911 as produced by Jindal Stainless) and makes no medical-device claims.

Is stainless steel antibacterial or antimicrobial?

No antimicrobial claim is made, and that's the honest answer to "is stainless steel antimicrobial." We don't claim antimicrobial properties. Stainless steel is smooth, non-porous and easy to clean, and that's exactly why hospitals use it.

Does bleach or hypochlorite damage stainless steel?

Chlorides cause pitting, and 200-series grades along with 430 are especially prone to it; 316L holds up best against this. Rinse the surface and dry it after any chlorine-based cleaning. That's the practical answer to "does bleach damage stainless steel" and "does hypochlorite damage stainless steel".

Hospital bed ke liye ss sheet ya trolley ke liye ss sheet, kaunsa grade aur finish?

Go with SS 304 in No.4 or hairline finish for both. Only step up to 316L where the trolley or bed actually faces heavy chlorine-based cleaning or wet use.

What thickness is used for hospital beds and trolleys?

Usually around 1.0–1.5 mm (roughly 20–16 gauge) for bed panels and trolley tops, and 0.8–1.0 mm for locker skins. Stick to your design drawings; tolerances follow IS 1730 (used alongside IS 6911).

Is 304 magnetic, and how do I check genuine 304 for a hospital tender?

Annealed 304 is essentially non-magnetic, but it can pick up slight magnetism after cold work. So a magnet alone isn't proof, see is stainless steel magnetic. Checking genuine 304 for hospital tender files is a different matter; rely on the mill test certificate and heat number. More on that in how to identify real SS 304.

Do you supply ss sheet with MTC for hospital tender files and hospital furniture orders?

Yes, material comes with the Jindal mill test certificate. So every ss sheet with MTC for hospital furniture orders and tender files traces back to its heat number. Just mention your tender or QA documentation needs on the RFQ.

What is the minimum order, price and delivery to my city?

There is no minimum order; larger quantities get better rates. Prices are ex-Delhi with GST and freight extra, see the indicative price list and confirm today's rate and transit on your RFQ.

Hospital furniture wali ss sheet ka rate kya hai?

Rates move daily with nickel, so we do not print a figure here. Check the indicative SS sheet price list and get today's rate on the RFQ.

Do you make hospital furniture?

No. Relinox is a stainless sheet distributor and a Jindal Stainless MoU partner. We handle material supply, plus cut-to-size and perforation job-work, for the fabricators and OEMs building the furniture.
