Stainless Steel Sheet for Water Storage Tanks: Grades, Thickness & Supply

Jindal Stainless SS 304 works fine as the potable-safe sheet for most water storage tanks. Move up to SS 316 when you're dealing with coastal air, saline conditions or high-chloride borewell water. SS 202 or J4 has its place too, but only for economy, non-potable tank bodies. Relinox supplies the stainless steel sheet for water tanks: genuine Jindal flat product, mill test certificate included, cut to your panel sizes. It doesn't sell finished tanks. The takeaway for anyone buying an ss sheet for water tank is simple. Match the grade to the water first, then settle thickness, finish and size against the tank design.

Stainless steel storage tanks at an industrial facility

Relinox works only with genuine Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) flat product, sheet only, nothing else. That excludes Jindal SAW, Jindal (India), JSW, JSPL carbon steel or pipes, and SAIL Salem. The company supplies stainless steel sheet and coil so customers can fabricate water tanks themselves. It doesn't make, sell or install finished water tanks, and it stays out of plastic and RCC tanks entirely.

Honest promise: we'll match the right Jindal Stainless grade to your water, potable, coastal or economy, and supply genuine sheet with mill certificates, cut to your panel sizes.

Which stainless steel grade for a water tank?

Stainless steel water tank sheet grade is the decision that matters most here. Best ss grade for water tank, which ss for water tank, both questions boil down to four water profiles: municipal potable, hard borewell, coastal/saline, and non-potable industrial. Each one has its own grade, its own thickness band, and a route to the full grade page.

A quick read on each: an ss 304 sheet for water tank is the default for drinking-water overhead and underground tanks; an ss 316 / 316L sheet for water tank in coastal or borewell service resists pitting where chloride is high; and an ss 202 sheet for water tank is an economy body option only. For ss 444 / duplex sheet for water tank enquiries, both are available against indent, send your requirement via the RFQ form. Full composition and mechanical data live on each linked grade page.

304 vs 202 vs 316 for water tanks: the trade-off

The tank-specific verdict on 304 vs 202 water tank questions: 202 saves cost but is not the grade for drinking water; 304 is the safe potable default; 316 is the upgrade for chloride. For the head-to-head 304 vs 202 for water tank comparison across price and kitchen use, see the dedicated guide, compare 202 vs 304 for tanks.

Food-grade & potable-water safety

Stainless steel makes an inert, non-leaching food-contact surface, but only when the right grade and finish are used. That's why a food grade ss sheet for water tank is specified as 304 (or 316), with a smooth 2B interior for easy cleaning. A potable water tank sheet requirement is a customer-specifiable spec you name against your indent. The material conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911 as produced by Jindal Stainless, and the mill test certificate backs that up. Relinox doesn't assert its own food-safety certificate. We supply verified-Jindal material to your specified grade. For the definition and how to choose, see food-grade stainless explained.

Tank types & the sheet they need

Different tanks call for different forms of flat product:

  • Overhead tanks, an ss sheet for overhead water tank typically runs 0.8–2.0 mm in 304 for potable roof-top storage.
  • Underground / sump tanks, an ss sheet for underground water tank or sump water tank body draws on the same austenitic grades. Step up to 316 where soil moisture and TDS get aggressive.
  • Sectional / pressed-panel tanks, an ss panel or sectional or pressed panel tank sheet presses best from coil, so every panel comes out identical. Large runs go coil to panel.
  • Liners & cladding, an ss tank liner or ss water tank cladding sheet lines an existing RCC or masonry tank with a hygienic stainless surface.

Thickness, gauge & sheet size

11 gauge steel isn't the whole story here. The thickness of ss sheet for water tank work usually runs 0.8–3.0 mm (≈22–11 gauge) for panel and liner bodies; larger sectional tanks call for heavier gauge or plate. If you're asking which gauge for tank fabrication, pin it down against the tank height and span in your design first, then confirm the stocked band on RFQ. Standard sheet sizes are 1250×2500 (4×8 / "8x4"), 1250×3050 (4×10) and 1500×3000 (5×10) mm, with coil available for pressed-panel runs.

For an ss coil for water tank or ss patta for tank fabrication, and for ss plate for large water tank bodies, use the product pages above to route through. To work out water tank ss sheet weight or the 8x4 sheet weight for tank panels, try the stainless steel weight calculator alongside the SS sheet weight chart. Gauge and size detail lives in SS sheet sizes & gauge. As for finish, 2B mill gives a smooth, easy-clean interior, while No.4 suits a brushed exterior. Both are covered in SS finishes explained.

Corrosion, water chemistry & tank life

Correctly chosen and passivated stainless resists corrosion in stored water. Pitting only starts once chloride exposure exceeds what the grade can tolerate. That's why municipal potable water works fine with 304, while saline, coastal or high-TDS borewell water needs the molybdenum in 316, or 444 for hot-water and stress-corrosion-prone service. Keep the interior smooth (2B) and passivated, match the grade to your water chemistry, and a stainless tank will outlast painted mild-steel and plastic alternatives. Standard corrosion behaviour follows ASTM A240 / IS 6911; see ASTM A240 and IS 6911.

FAQ

Which stainless steel grade is best for a water storage tank?

SS 304 for standard potable water; SS 316 for coastal, high-chloride or borewell water; SS 202 / J4 only for economy, non-potable bodies.

Is SS 202 safe for a drinking-water tank?

SS 202 is an economy 200-series grade, with lower chloride tolerance than the true stainless grades. For potable water, or anything hard or coastal, 304 (or 316) is the recommendation. Save 202 / J4 for non-potable or low-chloride applications.

SS 304 vs 316 for borewell / hard water, which?

316's molybdenum resists pitting better when chloride or TDS is high or the water is saline. For normal municipal water, 304 gets the job done.

What thickness of SS sheet is used for water tanks?

Panel and liner bodies typically run 0.8–3.0 mm, roughly 22–11 gauge; larger sectional tanks call for heavier gauge or plate. Check this against your tank design on RFQ.

Does stainless steel rust inside a water tank?

Correctly chosen and passivated stainless resists corrosion in water. Pitting only shows up when chloride exposure goes past the grade's tolerance, that's why you'd pick 316 or 444 for aggressive water.

Do you sell finished stainless steel water tanks?

Relinox handles the sheet, coil and plate for tank fabrication, using genuine Jindal material backed by an MTC. We don't build or install finished tanks ourselves.

Is the material genuine Jindal Stainless?

Yes, as an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless we supply genuine JSL-melted flat product, with a mill test certificate included. Just ask for an MTC sample when you send the RFQ.

What sheet size and finish should I order?

8x4 (1250×2500), 4×10 and 5×10 sheets, or coil for pressed-panel tanks. That's the standard lineup. For the interior, go with a 2B finish; it stays smooth and cleans up fast. Check our sheet sizes and gauge chart for the full breakdown.

Can you cut sheet to my panel sizes?

Cut-to-size and shearing job-work is available. Send your panel dimensions along with your RFQ.

What is the price of SS sheet for a water tank?

Indicative rates by grade and thickness sit on our price pages. Today's actual rate comes from an RFQ, we won't pin down a fixed figure here.

Do you supply paani ki tanki / tank sheet across India?

Yes, we ship pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi base. Just send your city and quantity through the RFQ form.
