Jindal SS 444 Sheet: Ferritic Stainless (18Cr-2Mo): Composition, Properties & Supply
SS 444 is a molybdenum-bearing, dual-stabilised ferritic stainless steel (UNS S44400, EN 1.4521 / X2CrMoTi18-2). Think of it as an 18% chromium, 2% molybdenum "18-2" ferritic grade, with titanium and niobium thrown in to tie up carbon and nitrogen. That roughly 2% molybdenum content pushes pitting resistance up near 316/316L levels, and the ferritic structure gives it strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Nickel content stays very low as a result. That's why it's a common choice for heat exchangers, hot-water and solar water tanks, and other equipment exposed to chlorides.
This page lays out the full composition, mechanical and physical data for 444 stainless steel, and covers where it outperforms 316L.
Relinox Stainless is an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of flat stainless products. It has no connection to Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL); those are carbon-steel and pipe businesses. SS 444 is a specialty ferritic grade. We supply genuine JSL-melted jindal ss 444 sheet, available on request or against indent, with mill test certificates included. We don't sell it as guaranteed bazaar ex-stock.

What is SS 444 stainless steel?
SS 444 (also written grade 444, aisi 444 or 444 ss) is the molybdenum-bearing ferritic counterpart to austenitic 316L. A plain 430 ferritic has only chromium. 444 goes further, adding roughly 2% molybdenum for pitting resistance plus a titanium-plus-niobium stabilisation package, which lets it weld and form far better than 430 ever could. It's ferritic and low in nickel, so its price holds steadier than nickel-heavy austenitics. It also stands up well against chloride stress-corrosion cracking (SCC), the failure mode that goes after 304/316 in hot chloride service like hot-water tanks and heat-exchanger tubing.
It's the right grade when you're after near-316L corrosion performance without the nickel content, provided you can live with ferritic formability and weld toughness limits. Full designations, composition, properties, corrosion behaviour and a 444-vs-316L decision table follow below.
Designations & equivalents (UNS S44400 / 1.4521)
The standard designations for this grade turn up under a few names: search terms like uns s44400, 1.4521, or x2crmoti18-2. Below are the details. For the austenitic molybdenum peer, see the 316L Mo-bearing austenitic grade. The plain ferritic siblings are covered separately too, check the ferritic 439/441/436 sheets and the basic 430 ferritic grade.

SS 444 chemical composition (UNS S44400)
The ss 444 chemical composition below follows the published limits set out in ASTM A240 (mirrored by IS 6911) for UNS S44400. See the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard for the full detail. What sets this 444 composition % apart is the roughly 2% molybdenum, paired with titanium-and-niobium stabilisation. Ti and Nb bond with carbon and nitrogen to form stable carbides and nitrides. That reaction stops chromium-carbide precipitation and holds on to both corrosion resistance and weld toughness.

SS 444 mechanical & physical properties
The ss 444 properties listed below reflect the minimum values in the annealed condition per ASTM A240, covering sheet, plate and strip. Tensile strength, yield, elongation and hardness make up these mechanical properties 444 figures, and they're what you specify against your indent.
| Property (annealed, per ASTM A240) | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 415 MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% proof), min | 275 MPa |
| Elongation, min | 20% |
| Hardness, max | 217 HBW / 96 HRB |
For ss 444 density, melting point and hardness, check the physical table, those are the constants you want. Same goes for the common is ss 444 magnetic question. It's ferritic, so yes, 444 is magnetic. Thermal expansion runs low too, which works in its favor for heat-exchanger duty and anything cycling through repeated temperature swings.
| Physical property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.75 g/cm³ |
| Melting range | ≈ 1470–1525 °C |
| Magnetic response | Yes, ferritic, magnetic |
| Thermal expansion | Low (ferritic), ≈ 10.4 µm/m·°C |
SS 444 corrosion resistance: why it rivals 316L
On ss 444 corrosion resistance, the roughly 2% molybdenum content is what does the work: it pushes pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance close to austenitic 316/316L, well above a plain 430 ferritic grade. The bigger differentiator is chloride SCC 444 behavior. Because 444 is ferritic, it resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking extremely well, the very mechanism that cracks austenitic 304/316 under tensile stress in hot chloride environments such as hot-water tanks, brine, and coastal or process water. Near-316L pitting resistance paired with ferritic immunity to chloride SCC is exactly why designers reach for 444 in hot chloride-bearing service.
With nickel capped at ≤1%, 444 has a second commercial advantage: its price barely moves with nickel volatility, unlike 316L's. That makes it the steadier route to Mo-grade corrosion performance on cost alone. For process-side use see chemical / process-plant equipment.
SS 444 vs 316L: when to choose which
Structure drives the ss 444 vs 316l decision, and it's the same question people ask as 444 vs 316 stainless: 444 is ferritic with low nickel content, while 316L is austenitic. Check the table below to make the call.
| Attribute | SS 444 (ferritic) | SS 316L (austenitic) |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel content | ≤ 1% (low) | ~10–14% |
| Cost stability | More stable, little nickel exposure | Tracks nickel + molybdenum markets |
| Chloride stress-corrosion cracking | Highly resistant (ferritic) | Susceptible under stress in hot chlorides |
| Pitting resistance | Approaches 316/316L (Mo-bearing) | Excellent (Mo-bearing) |
| Formability / weldability | Good for a ferritic (stabilised); limited vs austenitic | Excellent, deep-draw & complex welds |
| Magnetic | Yes | Essentially non-magnetic (annealed) |
| Typical use | Heat exchangers, hot-water/solar tanks, exhaust | Welded pharma/dairy, chemical, marine fabrication |
Verdict: choose 444 where chloride-SCC resistance and nickel-price stability matter and the part is not a deep-drawn or heavily welded complex fabrication; choose 316L for formability and weldability of complex welded assemblies. Against the plain ferritics, note the ss 444 vs 430 and 444 vs 439 ferritic gap: 444 adds ~2% Mo and Ti+Nb stabilisation for far better corrosion and weld toughness than 430 or the 439/441/436 family. As an ss 444 equivalent grade, its closest austenitic peer is 316L and its ferritic cousins are 430/439/441/436, a comparison sometimes phrased loosely as 444 vs 444 ferritic when buyers are really asking which ferritic to pick.
Applications of grade 444
Grade 444 earns its place wherever hot chloride water meets stressed metal. As a 444 ferritic grade heat exchanger material, it resists both pitting and chloride SCC, and its low thermal expansion suits thermal cycling. Common uses for 444 stainless heat exchanger, hot water tank and solar water heater service include:
- Heat-exchanger plates and tubing for hot / brackish water
- Domestic and industrial hot water tanks and solar water heater tanks
- Exhaust systems and hot-gas ducting (low expansion, oxidation resistance)
- Textile, chemical and food-processing equipment exposed to chlorides
For storing water, check out water storage tanks. If you're dealing with chlorides or acids, the chemical & process-plant equipment page covers that.

Frequently asked questions
What is SS 444 stainless steel?
SS 444 is a molybdenum-bearing ferritic stainless steel with dual stabilisation from titanium and niobium, designated UNS S44400 or EN 1.4521. It carries roughly 18% chromium and 2% molybdenum. That molybdenum content puts its pitting resistance close to 316L, and the ferritic structure holds up well against chloride stress-corrosion cracking, unlike 316.
Is SS 444 magnetic?
Yes. SS 444 is a ferritic stainless steel, so it's magnetic, unlike the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades such as 304 and 316L.
Is SS 444 as corrosion-resistant as 316?
Its ~2% molybdenum content gives it pitting resistance close to 316/316L. Being ferritic, it also holds up better than austenitic 316 against chloride stress-corrosion cracking. That combination is why it gets picked for hot, chloride-bearing water service.
SS 444 vs 316L, which should I choose?
Choose 444 where chloride-SCC resistance and nickel-price stability matter, and where the part isn't a complex deep-drawn or heavily welded fabrication. Choose 316L when you need the formability and weldability that complex welded assemblies demand. See the comparison table above.
What is the chemical composition of grade 444?
Standard limits per ASTM A240 for UNS S44400 run roughly Cr 17.5–19.5%, Mo 1.75–2.50%, C ≤0.025%, N ≤0.035%, Ni ≤1.0%. There's also a Ti+Nb stabilisation addition, capped at 0.80%. For the full element list, check the composition table.
What is SS 444 used for?
Heat exchangers, hot-water and solar water heater tanks, exhaust systems and hot-gas ducting, and equipment used in textile, chemical, and food processing that gets exposed to chlorides.
Does SS 444 resist chloride corrosion?
Yes. Its molybdenum content pushes pitting resistance up toward 316L levels, and because it's a ferritic grade, it holds up well against chloride stress-corrosion cracking, the failure mode that tends to attack austenitic grades like 316 in hot chloride environments.
Is Jindal SS 444 sheet available in India?
