Stainless Steel for Railings & Architecture: Grades, Finishes & Sheet Supply
Most railings and balustrades call for grade 304 stainless, supplied as sheet, plate or patta, in hairline or mirror finish. Step up to 316 or 316L when the railing sits outdoors, near the coast, or faces the sea. Keep 202, J4 and 201 for dry, budget-driven indoor jobs only.

Relinox handles the flat material: SS sheet for railing and stainless steel sheet for railing, along with plate, patta/strip, circles and perforated sheet, all meant for railing and architectural fabrication. Pipes and tubes fall outside our scope, so source those elsewhere.
Your fitter might ask for "railing ke liye SS sheet" or "railing wali sheet" - either way, this page points you to the right grade, form and finish for stainless steel for railings and architecture.
Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) has an authorized MoU partnership with Relinox for stainless flat products. That's separate from Jindal SAW, JSW, and JSPL, which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it has nothing to do with SAIL Salem either. So when you see "jindal ss sheet for railing" or "jindal railing sheet" here, it refers to genuine JSL-melted material, backed by mill test certificates.
Which stainless steel grade for railings?
Which grade fits your railing, 304, 316 or 202, really depends on where it's going to live. 304 handles most indoor and covered work: it forms easily, welds and polishes well, and shrugs off everyday corrosion without fuss. Take the railing outdoors, near the coast or facing the sea, and 316 / 316L is the better call, the added molybdenum gives it an edge against chloride and pitting in open-air and marine conditions (grade-family, corrosion and molybdenum behaviour per ASTM A240 / IS 6911 published data). Working to a tighter budget on an indoor sheet job? 202, J4 and 201 bring the cost down for dry, decorative interior use, though they trail 304 on corrosion resistance, keep them well away from bathrooms, exteriors and coastal air.
The table below matches common railing and architectural elements to a recommended grade, form and indicative thickness. Gauge callouts follow the usual fabrication bands; the fabricator or specifier sets exact gauge based on the load and span.
| Railing / architectural element | Recommended grade | Why | Typical form & finish | Indicative thickness (mm + gauge) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handrail cap, saddle, wall bracket | 304 | Formable, corrosion-safe indoor/covered, welds & polishes well | Sheet / patta; hairline or mirror | 1.0–2.0 mm (≈20–14 g) |
| Balustrade infill panel / baluster | 304 | Takes laser-cut & bend detailing; durable at hand height | Sheet / perforated; hairline / mirror / PVD | 1.0–1.5 mm (≈20–16 g) |
| Glass-railing base / anchor plate, gusset | 304 (indoor) / 316 (outdoor) | Plate carries structural load; molybdenum for outdoor pitting resistance | Plate; 2B / satin | 6–12 mm plate |
| Glass-railing standoff / spigot / disc blank | 304 / 316 | Machined hardware; circle/plate stock | Circle / plate; mirror / satin | Machined from 6–12 mm |
| Railing post / newel cladding & end caps | 304 | Wrap-form + high-touch durability | Sheet / patta; hairline / mirror / PVD | 0.8–1.2 mm (≈22–18 g) |
| Outdoor / coastal / seafront railing (all parts) | 316 / 316L | Added molybdenum → chloride & pitting resistance outdoors | Sheet / plate; hairline / bead-blast | 1.2–2.0 mm (≈18–14 g) |
| Budget indoor railing (dry, cost-led) | 202 / J4 / 201 | Lower-cost 200-series; indoor only, less corrosion-resistant | Sheet / patta; 2B / mirror / PVD | 0.8–1.2 mm (≈22–18 g) |
| Decorative screen / jaali / canopy feature | 304 (indoor) / 316 (outdoor) | Perforated/cut architectural infill | Perforated sheet (job-work) | 1.0–2.0 mm (≈20–14 g) |

Forms we supply for railing fabrication
We supply flat material only: sheet, plate, patta/strip, circle and perforated sheet, along with cut-to-size and shearing to component dimensions. We don't supply SS pipe or round tube for railing; that's outside our scope, so pipe and tube need to be sourced separately.
| Form | Railing use | Typical thickness | Product page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | Balusters, infill panels, post cladding | 0.8–2.0 mm | Stainless steel sheet (forms, finishes, sizes) |
| Plate | Base / anchor plates, gussets, flanges | 6–12 mm | SS plate for base & anchor plates |
| Patta / strip | Handrail flats, cover trims | 0.8–3.0 mm | SS patta/strip for handrail flats & trims |
| Circle | Standoff / spigot / disc blanks | Machined from plate/circle stock | SS circles for standoff & disc blanks |
| Perforated sheet | Railing infill, decorative screen / jaali | 1.0–2.0 mm | Perforated sheet for railing infill & jaali |
Sheet
Flat-rolled stainless sheet (CR/HR, 2B base) is what we call ss baluster sheet, used for balusters, infill panels, and post cladding. Laser-cut baluster blanks get cut from the sheet as job-work.
Plate
Post-processing plate is your base plate, gusset, and flange plate for railing, the structural glass railing base plate and anchor plate sheet. Plate runs 6–12 mm, and it carries the load at post feet and glass anchors.
Patta / strip
The railing patta / patti / strip covers handrail flats, cover trims and cap profiles, the trade flats fitters slit and bend.
Circles
Circle and disc stock feeds the glass railing standoff / spigot / stud blank and other machined hardware, turned or milled from circle and plate.
Perforated sheet
Perforated sheet is the railing infill, decorative screen, or jaali sheet, architectural infill produced as job-work on Jindal base sheet.
Element-by-element guide
Handrails
Caps, saddles and wall brackets for the handrail ss sheet / handrail saddle & bracket blank all come from 304 in sheet or patta at 1.0–2.0 mm. That gauge carries the forming, welding and polishing without trouble.
Balustrades & balusters
For ss for balustrade / balustrade sheet work, infill panels and balusters, 304 sheet (or perforated sheet) takes laser-cut and bend detailing and holds up at hand height. Both staircase railing ss sheet and balcony railing ss sheet jobs fall into this category: 304 indoors, 316 where the balcony faces open coastal air.
Glass-railing hardware
Glass railings call for plate and circle stock: a glass railing base plate (or anchor plate sheet) at 6–12 mm, and a glass railing standoff, spigot, or stud blank, machined from circle or plate. Use 304 indoors. Outdoors, go with 316.
Posts & newel cladding
For railing post / newel cladding sheet / cover cap, wrap-form cladding and end caps, 304 sheet or patta at 0.8–1.2 mm delivers durability that stands up to constant handling, in a hairline, mirror or PVD finish.
Outdoor / coastal railings
Coastal, seafront and other outdoor railings should be all-316: the molybdenum stands up to the chloride pitting sea air causes, in line with ASTM A240 / IS 6911 behaviour. See 316L for coastal railings.
Architectural stainless beyond railings
Architectural stainless steel, also searched as ss for architecture, extends past railings into canopy / entrance / porch feature ss sheet, and planter / bollard / street-furniture ss sheet. Decorative screens and jaali run on perforated sheet; entrance canopies and porch features go on sheet and plate. Use 304 for covered interiors, and reach for 316 once anything sits exposed outdoors. Façade wall cladding, covering column, lobby and elevation work, is laid out on our wall & façade cladding sheet page. Channel letters and name-board sheet sit on the signage & letters page.
Finishes for railings & architecture
Hairline's the everyday railing finish. Mirror and PVD colour are what drive the decorative jobs.
| Finish | Look | Fingerprint / scratch behaviour | Best-for element | More |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hairline (No.4) | Fine directional brush, matt satin | Hides fingerprints & light scratches well | Handrails, posts, high-touch parts | hairline / No.4 brushed finish |
| Mirror (No.8) | Bright, reflective | Shows fingerprints & scratches | Feature balusters, decorative panels | mirror finish railing sheet |
| PVD colour (gold / rose-gold / black) | Coloured decorative coat | Coating masks marks; anti-fingerprint feel | Decorative feature railings | gold / rose-gold / black PVD railing sheet |
| Bead-blast / satin | Uniform matt | Hides marks; scratch-hiding | Outdoor & architectural features | finishes explained |
The mirror finish railing sheet and the gold, rose-gold, and black PVD railing sheets show up most often on decorative Indian railings, while hairline (No.4 brushed) is the standard choice for handrails. Looking for a finish that hides fingerprints and scratches? Both hairline and PVD do a far better job of masking marks than a bright mirror surface does. Every one of these designer finishes is job-work applied on top of a Jindal base sheet.
Sizes, thickness & cut-to-size for railing components
We stock standard Indian sizes and cut to your component dimensions. The common ask, 8x4 / 4x10 / 5x10 ss sheet for railing, is covered below, along with ss sheet thickness / gauge for railing base plate guidance.
| Size (ft / mm) | Typical use | Thickness band (mm + gauge) |
|---|---|---|
| 8x4 (1250×2500 mm) | General baluster / infill / cladding sheet | 0.8–2.0 mm (≈22–14 g) |
| 4×10 (1250×3050 mm) | Tall balusters, long cladding runs | 0.8–2.0 mm (≈22–14 g) |
| 5×10 (1500×3000 mm) | Wide screens & feature panels | 1.0–2.0 mm (≈20–14 g) |
| Plate (cut-to-size) | Base / anchor plates, gussets | 6–12 mm |
| Cut-to-size / patta | Handrail flats, brackets, trims | 0.8–3.0 mm |
Cut-to-size / shearing and perforation are provided as job-work, and laser-cutting of balusters and screens is arranged. For weight per 8x4 and gauge references, use the sheet/plate weight per 8x4 chart and the stainless steel weight calculator, and the sizes & gauge chart.
Compliance & material assurance
Sheet, strip and plate meet the applicable standard, ASTM A240 / IS 6911, as produced by Jindal Stainless, and every dispatch carries a mill test certificate (MTC) to back it up. This is genuine Jindal railing material and MTC; it isn't re-rolled stock from some bazaar supplier. For the details, check our mill test certificates (MTC) page, the sheet/plate standard & conformance reference, and IS 6911.
Why source railing & architectural SS from Relinox
Relinox is an authorized MoU partner of Jindal Stainless, based at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets, and it dispatches pan-India. If you searched for a railing SS sheet dealer, distributor, stockist, trader (or trader in Delhi), supplier (or supplier India), or an architectural SS sheet dealer near you, you've landed in the right spot. People often search for a railing SS sheet manufacturer too, but that's not quite accurate here: we are an authorized distributor and stockist of genuine Jindal flat products, not a mill.
Jindal Stainless offers the full grade range, with verify-list grades checked against indent or on request. Cut-to-size work, finishing, and perforation are available as job-work, and every piece comes with MTC-backed material.
Fabricators and workshops can request a quote with MTC. Architects and contractors should request finish samples by sending their requirement through the RFQ form. See our Jindal Stainless MoU authorization, check the applications hub grades range, and find city coverage via our locations.

FAQ
Which stainless steel grade is best for railings?
Grade 304 works for most railings, staircases, balconies, handrails and balustrades, whether indoors or in covered outdoor areas. It forms easily, resists corrosion, and welds and polishes well. For open-air, coastal or seafront railings, go with 316 or 316L. Reserve 202, J4 and 201 for dry, indoor railings where cost is the main driver.
304 or 316 for outdoor / coastal railings?
316 adds molybdenum for better chloride and pitting resistance, so it works well for open exteriors and coastal settings, while 304 fits interiors and covered areas. See our 304 vs 316 guide for the full comparison.
Is 202 stainless steel ok for railings?
202 (the 200-series) is a common choice for budget indoor railings, and it works fine with mirror and PVD finishes. It resists corrosion less than 304, though, so keep it away from outdoor settings, bathrooms and coastal air. Check our 202 vs 304 guide for more.
What thickness of SS sheet is used for railing components?
Sheet parts like balusters, cladding and caps typically run 0.8–2.0 mm, while structural glass-railing base and anchor plates come in at 6–12 mm. The fabricator or specifier sets the exact gauge based on load and span.
Do you supply SS pipe or tube for railings?
No, Relinox supplies flat products only: sheet, plate, patta/strip, circles and perforated sheet. We're the source for base plates, caps, brackets, infill panels and cladding. Pipe and tube need to be sourced separately.
What finish is used on stainless steel railings?
Hairline finish, also called No.4, and mirror finish cover most railings you'll see. PVD gold, rose-gold and black turn up often on decorative Indian railings, while bead-blast or satin gives that flat, matt surface. All of it starts as job-work applied to Jindal base sheet.
Which sheet and plate sizes do you supply?
Sheet stock comes in three standard sizes: 8x4 (1250×2500), 4×10 (1250×3050) and 5×10 (1500×3000) mm. Plate runs up to 12 mm and beyond. Every option can be cut to your exact component dimensions.
Can you cut-to-size, laser-cut or perforate railing parts?
Yes, cut-to-size/shearing and perforation are both offered as job-work, and we can arrange laser-cutting of balusters and screens as well. Just send your part drawings along with the RFQ.
Is stainless steel railing material magnetic?
304 and 316, both austenitic, are largely non-magnetic. 202 carries a weak magnetic pull, and 430, a ferritic grade, is fully magnetic. A quick magnet check is often enough to tell a budget panel apart from 304.
Is your railing material genuine Jindal Stainless?
Relinox is an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless (JSL), yes, and it supplies JSL-melted material with mill test certificates rather than re-rolled bazaar stock.
Do you deliver outside Delhi?
Yes, we ship pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point. Please confirm dispatch timelines and freight terms on the RFQ.
What does railing SS sheet cost?
The rate you'll pay depends on grade, form, finish, thickness and quantity. Check the indicative price list, then confirm today's rate on the RFQ. We don't quote a fixed number on this page.
