SS 321 Stainless Steel Sheet: Jindal 321 / 321H Supplier, Composition & Price (India)

321 stainless steel sheet, also written ss 321 sheet, ss321 sheet, 321 ti or grade 321, is the titanium-stabilised austenitic grade: 18/9-type chromium-nickel stainless with a controlled titanium addition so carbon gets tied up as titanium carbide (TiC) instead of chromium carbide. Put simply, what is 321 stainless steel: it's 304-type chemistry (Cr 17–19%, Ni 9–12%) with titanium at 5×C minimum, and that addition stops chromium-carbide precipitation (sensitisation) after welding and during service in the 425–870 °C range. Its designations are AISI 321 · Type 321 · UNS S32100 · EN 1.4541 · X6CrNiTi18-10, with the high-carbon variant 321H (UNS S32109) sitting alongside it. Relinox is a jindal 321 stainless steel sheet supplier, an authorized MoU-partner channel supplying genuine Jindal 321 sheet, plate, coil and patta with mill test certificates (MTC), pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. Composition and property figures below are per ASTM A240 and IS 6911, with Jindal Stainless (JSL) published data.

Jindal Stainless materials, tested to ASTM A240 and IS 6911, published by the Relinox Technical Team.

Jindal Stainless here refers specifically to Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), which deals only in stainless flat products. Relinox holds authorized MoU partner status with JSL. This is distinct from Jindal SAW, JSPL and JSW Steel, all of which handle carbon steel and pipes, and it's also separate from SAIL Salem.

What is SS 321 stainless steel?

321 stainless (also written as 321 stainless steel, ss 321, type 321, or aisi 321) belongs to the stabilised austenitic family. Take plain 304: when you weld it or hold it hot, carbon and chromium team up at the grain boundaries, and that leaves those zones short on chromium and vulnerable to intergranular attack. 321 handles this differently. Titanium bonds with carbon more readily than chromium does, so it grabs the carbon first and forms titanium carbide. That's stabilisation. Chromium stays dissolved in the matrix, which keeps the passive film intact through welding and through high-temperature service.

Standing at UNS S32100, in the stainless family: austenitic, then the stabilised austenitics (321, 347), then 321 itself, then its forms, sheet, plate, coil, strip/patta, and finally 321H, the high-temperature sub-variant. UNS S32100 is the designation (321 UNS S32100). Europe calls it 1.4541 / X6CrNiTi18-10. In India it lines up with the Ti-stabilised 18/9 austenitic flat product covered by IS 6911.

Buyers in the Hindi market ask for the 321 patta, 321 patti or 321 chadar / sheet. It's all the same grade underneath. On the order sheet it usually shows up as 8×4 321 sheet.

For a 321 stainless steel equivalent grade on a spec sheet, quote UNS S32100 / EN 1.4541 (and UNS S32109 / EN 1.4878 for 321H). The 321 astm reference is ASTM A240 (S32100). The 321 is 6911 reference, by contrast, is the stabilised austenitic flat product. See ASTM A240 and IS 6911 for the standard scope. The nearest sister grade is 347, niobium-stabilised instead of titanium. It's noted here only for comparison; we don't stock it as a separate line.

SS 321 chemical composition

The 321 stainless steel composition below follows ASTM A240 (S32100) and lines up with the titanium-stabilised austenitic requirement in IS 6911. Buyers checking an MTC often call this the ss 321 composition, or the 321 stainless steel chemical composition. The row that actually defines the grade is titanium, held at 5×(C+N) minimum.

The titanium minimum for this grade is set by ASTM A240: 5 × (C + N) for 321 and 4 × (C + N) for 321H, capped at 0.70%. That's what locks up the carbon and gives the material its stabilisation. Check the titanium figure on the MTC first. Stabilised grades like these are the ones most often swapped out for plain 304 in re-rolled bazaar material, so it pays to look closely.

SS 321 mechanical & physical properties

The 321 stainless steel properties listed below are annealed reference minima under ASTM A240; the physical constants come from Jindal Stainless and standard published data for austenitic 321. Quote the 321 stainless steel mechanical properties against indent using these figures. Jindal maintains these as the baseline values buyers should expect.

0.2% yield strength (min)205 (30 ksi)MPa
Elongation (min)40%
Hardness (max)≤95 HRB / ≤217 HB—

For reference, the 321 tensile strength runs ≥515 MPa (75 ksi), and the yield (0.2% proof) is ≥205 MPa (30 ksi) annealed. Elongation sits at ≥40%. Hardness is capped at ≤95 HRB / ≤217 HB.

Physical properties

PropertyValueUnit
321 density~7.90–8.03 (≈8,000)g/cm³ (kg/m³)
321 melting range~1,400–1,425°C
Max service temperature~870 continuous / ~815 intermittent°C
Magnetic responseNon-magnetic (annealed)—

So the 321 density is about 8.0 g/cm³ (≈8,000 kg/m³) and the 321 melting range is roughly 1,400–1,425 °C. The temperature limit of 321 SS is good oxidation resistance to about 870 °C continuous / 815 °C intermittent, with the titanium stabilisation specifically targeting the 425–870 °C sensitisation range. Is 321 stainless steel magnetic? No, it is essentially non-magnetic when annealed, because it is austenitic; heavy cold work can induce slight magnetism, so magnetic response alone is not a reliable grade test, the MTC is. To convert these figures into 321 stainless steel weight per sheet / kg, use our SS sheet weight chart or the stainless steel weight calculator at density 8.0.

Corrosion resistance & high-temperature behaviour

The reason to choose 321 is the titanium stabilisation. Because titanium binds carbon as TiC, chromium carbides do not precipitate at the grain boundaries during welding or during prolonged service in the sensitisation range (~425–870 °C), so the weld zone and heat-affected areas keep their intergranular-corrosion resistance. In general chloride pitting, 321 is similar to 304 and not a substitute for 316; where chlorides drive the design, use SS 316. Where the part is welded and runs hot without chlorides, 321 is the grade.

SS 321 vs 321H: what's the difference?

321H stainless steel (SS 321H sheet) is the same titanium-stabilised austenitic grade, but with a higher, tightly controlled carbon content for better creep resistance and high-temperature strength. The difference between 321 and 321H really comes down to two things: the carbon range, and the service temperature each grade is specified for.

Attribute321321H
UNSS32100S32109
Carbon0.08% max0.04–0.10% (controlled)
Titanium minimum5 × (C + N)4 × (C + N)
Best forWelded parts running hot to ~870 °CSustained high-temperature / creep service above ~540 °C

Choose 321H when service runs sustained above about 540 °C and creep strength is the deciding factor. For the broader run of welded, high-temperature fabrication, standard 321 does the job. Being a specialty high-temperature grade, 321H is supplied against indent / on request rather than held as regular stock, so confirm availability on RFQ.

321 vs 304 vs 347 (nearby grades)

321 vs 304, 321 vs 347 and 321 vs 316 all turn on one question: does the part need stabilisation against carbide precipitation? Plain 304/304L is the unstabilised base; 347 is the niobium-stabilised sister grade that does the same job as 321 by a different route; 316 adds molybdenum for chloride resistance but is not stabilised. Is 321 better than 304? For welded or high-temperature parts, yes, the stabilisation avoids sensitisation; for ambient service, SS 304 is usually adequate and more economical, and for chlorides use SS 316. For higher-temperature duty than 321 handles, step up to SS 304H or SS 310S; for a molybdenum-bearing option see SS 317L. Browse the full grades hub to compare.

Applications of 321 stainless steel

321 stainless steel applications and uses tend to show up wherever equipment is welded and runs hot, or gets cycled through the sensitisation range:

Exhaust systems and expansion joints, automotive, aircraft and bus-body work all call for 321 for exhaust components. See bus body & transport.

Heat exchangers, furnace parts and high-temperature process equipment draw on 321 for heat exchanger, furnace and other high temperature duty across the 425–870 °C band. Details are under chemical process plants.

Welded assemblies and fabrication present a different challenge: vessels, ducting and structures that stay hot for long stretches need stabilisation to keep the weld zone corrosion-resistant. More on this at fabrication & engineering and kitchen equipment.

Standards & conformance

321 and 321H meet ASTM A240 / A240M and IS 6911 for sheet, strip and plate. Jindal Stainless produces the material, and a mill test certificate backs it up: that's the 321 astm a240 / is 6911 conformance buyers ask for. Relinox lists these as the standards the material satisfies, covering mill conformance only; we make no Relinox certification claim beyond the JSL MTC. See ASTM A240, IS 6911 and quality & mill test certificates.

Frequently asked questions

What is SS 321 stainless steel?

SS 321 is a titanium-stabilised austenitic stainless steel, designated UNS S32100. Titanium binds carbon as titanium carbide. That keeps chromium-carbide precipitation in check, which means the material resists intergranular corrosion after welding and during high-temperature service, as set out in ASTM A240.

What is the difference between 321 and 321H?

321H (UNS S32109) carries higher, controlled carbon (0.04–0.10%), which gives it better creep resistance and greater strength at high temperature; both 321H and 321 are titanium-stabilised. Pick 321H for sustained service above roughly 540 °C. Note that it's supplied against indent or on request.

Is 321 stainless steel magnetic?

No, 321 is basically non-magnetic when annealed, since it's austenitic. Heavy cold work can bring out a bit of magnetism, though, so a magnet test alone won't confirm the grade. Check the mill test certificate instead.

What is the maximum temperature for 321 SS?

321 holds up well against oxidation, roughly 870 °C for continuous service and 815 °C intermittently. Its titanium stabilisation is aimed squarely at the 425–870 °C sensitisation range. When the job calls for sustained high-temperature creep, 321H is the grade to reach for.

Is 321 better than 304?

For welded or high-temperature parts, stabilization is worth it: it avoids sensitization, which can affect 304 under those same conditions. In ambient service, 304 is usually good enough and cheaper. For chloride environments, 316 is the right call, per ASTM A240.

Is 321 stainless steel food grade?

321 is a food-contact-capable austenitic like 304, though 304 and 316 remain the usual food-grade picks. Engineers typically call out 321 for its high-temperature strength and welding behavior rather than for corrosion resistance in wet environments. Whichever grade you land on, confirm it against your own compliance requirement.

What sizes and thickness does 321 sheet come in?

Standard sheets come in 8×4 (1250×2500), 4×10 (1250×3050), and 5×10 (1500×3000) mm, and thickness runs from about 0.3 mm up to 12 mm or more (mm plus gauge). The exact stocked 321 range gets confirmed on RFQ.

What is the price of SS 321 sheet per kg?

321 is priced per kg based on nickel/LME movements, the stabilised-grade premium, thickness, finish, quantity and freight. We'll share an indicative table and confirm today's rate on RFQ. For the 304 baseline, check the SS 304 sheet price page.

Do you supply genuine Jindal 321 with MTC?

Yes. Relinox is a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, so we supply genuine JSL-melted 321 with a mill test certificate confirming the titanium stabilisation. Request a sample MTC through the RFQ form.

Which standard does 321 conform to?

Jindal Stainless produces 321 to meet ASTM A240 / A240M and IS 6911 for sheet, strip and plate, backed up by a mill test certificate.

Can you cut 321 sheet to size or supply plate, coil or patta?

Sheet, plate, coil and strip/patta forms are all available, and we can handle cut-to-size job-work too. Send your sizes through the RFQ form, and we'll quote you with MTC included.

Do you deliver 321 outside Delhi?

Yes, we can do pan-India dispatch from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point, and we'll include a GST invoice. Freight and dispatch terms get confirmed on the RFQ.
