Ss 317L sheet, also written 317L stainless steel sheet, is the low-carbon, high-molybdenum austenitic stainless grade sitting one corrosion step above 316L. What is 317L stainless steel, in short? It's 317L stainless steel with molybdenum deliberately held at 3.0-4.0% (against 2.0-3.0% for 316L) and carbon capped at ≤0.03%. What is 317L stainless steel?
317L, also written as 317l stainless steel or aisi 317l, is the high-molybdenum, low-carbon member of the molybdenum-bearing 316/317 austenitic family. It's defined by UNS S31703. This grade exists to do one thing: beat 316L on corrosion resistance. The base is an 18Cr austenitic structure with extra nickel worked in, but the real change is the molybdenum content, pushed up to 3.0–4.0%. That shift sharply improves resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice attack, and reducing acids. Low carbon (≤0.03%) carries the same function it does in 316L. It fights off sensitisation at weld heat-affected zones, so the corrosion resistance holds up even after fabrication.
Where does 317L fit in the family tree? Stainless steel splits into austenitic 300-series, which includes the molybdenum-bearing 316/317 family, and within that sits 317L, the low-carbon, high-molybdenum grade. Its relatives are 316L (2–3% Mo), 316 (general moly) and duplex 2205, a higher-strength chloride alternative. Buyers in the Hindi market often ask for the 317l patta, 317l patti or 317L chadar / sheet. These names all point to the same grade. On the order, it typically gets quoted as an 8x4 or 4x8 sheet.

What makes this a 317L rather than a 316L certificate comes down to molybdenum: 3.0–4.0% Mo, against 316L's 2.0–3.0%. Higher nickel backs that up, keeping the structure fully austenitic at that alloy loading. That's the whole design. Extra molybdenum for corrosion resistance, low carbon for weldability.

Corrosion behaviour & magnetic response
Corrosion resistance is the whole point behind 317L. Extra molybdenum pushes up the PREN (pitting resistance equivalent number, PREN ≈ Cr + 3.3·Mo + 16·N). Because of that, 317L stands up to 317l pitting corrosion and crevice attack in higher-chloride resistance service than 316L manages, and it fares better in reducing acids like sulphuric and phosphoric acid. Put simply, that's what the 3–4% Mo band buys you: a real, measurable gain in pitting and acid resistance for tough process media, without jumping all the way to duplex or super-austenitic grades.
On the common 317l magnetic / is 317l magnetic question, the short answer is no. In the annealed condition, 317L behaves like the rest of the austenitic family and stays non-magnetic. Push it through heavy cold work, though, and you can coax out a slight magnetic response. Don't trust a magnet to confirm the grade. Pull the mill test certificate instead.
