SS 316 Stainless Steel: Composition, Properties & Sheet Supply (Jindal Stainless)
SS 316 (also written 316 SS, Type 316, AISI 316) is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel, designated UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, and IS 6911 grade 316. Chromium sits at 16-18% and nickel at 10-14%, but it's the added 2-3% molybdenum that earns 316 its reputation as the marine grade stainless steel. That molybdenum sharply improves resistance to pitting and chloride attack.

Relinox supplies genuine Jindal SS 316 in sheet, plate, coil, patta and circle, each backed by a mill test certificate (MTC) confirming the molybdenum content. We ship pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. All composition and property figures quoted here come from ASTM A240, IS 6911 and published data from Jindal Stainless (JSL).
The Relinox Technical Team put this together. Figures trace back to ASTM A240, IS 6911 and published data from Jindal Stainless, drawn straight from Jindal's own records.
Under an MoU with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), we supply 316 as a partner, and that covers stainless flat products only. We're not Jindal SAW, JSPL or JSW, which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and we're not SAIL Salem either.
Price anchor: SS 316/316L CR 2B sheet trades in an indicative Delhi band of ₹280–360/kg by thickness, dated tables on the SS 316 price page. Indicative Delhi market ranges, reviewed October 2026, rates move daily with nickel; confirm today's exact rate on RFQ.
What is SS 316 stainless steel?
What is SS 316? It's the molybdenum-bearing member of the austenitic 300-series. What is 316 stainless steel in one line: take the familiar 18/8 chemistry, drop the carbon a touch, raise the nickel and add 2–3% molybdenum. Chromium forms the self-repairing passive film. Nickel holds the austenitic, non-magnetic structure. Molybdenum is the differentiator, plugging the gaps in that film so chlorides can't get a foothold and start pitting. That's why grade 316 stainless steel earns the name marine grade stainless steel across the board.
Among the grades, 316 stands as the standard corrosion upgrade over 304. For welded corrosion service, buyers pick lower-carbon 316L; when high-temperature strength with weld stability matters, titanium-stabilised 316Ti fits the bill; and for chlorides that hit even harder, higher-molybdenum 317L is the answer. In the Hindi market, customers often ask for 316 patta / patti (strip), 316 wali sheet, and the 316 ka rate, these all refer to the same grade. Designations worth quoting on any order include Type 316, AISI 316, UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, and IS 6911 grade 316.

SS 316 chemical composition
The SS 316 chemical composition below follows ASTM A240 (Type 316 / UNS S31600) and matches IS 6911 grade 316. Buyers use this 316 stainless steel composition percentage to check Cr Ni Mo content and verify against the MTC. The highlighted molybdenum row is what sets 316 apart from 304.
| Element | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | — | 0.08 |
| Manganese (Mn) | — | 2.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | — | 0.75 |
| Phosphorus (P) | — | 0.045 |
| Sulphur (S) | — | 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.0 | 18.0 |

| Nitrogen (N) | — | 0.10 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance | Balance |
Molybdenum is the whole point of 316 stainless. It sits at 2–3%, and that range is what separates the grade from something lesser. Why does molybdenum matter in 316? It stabilizes the passive layer against chloride attack. That's precisely why the Mo figure on the MTC deserves real scrutiny. Re-rolled bazaar material routinely comes in under-specced on molybdenum, even when it carries a 316 stamp.
SS 316 physical & mechanical properties
Jindal Stainless supplies the physical constants below for standard austenitic 316, and the mechanical minima come from ASTM A240. The SS 316 properties are annealed, meaning softened, reference values.
Physical properties
| Property | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| SS 316 density | 8.0 (≈7,980–8,000) | g/cm³ (kg/m³) |
| SS 316 melting point (range) | 1,370–1,400 | °C |
| Modulus of elasticity | 193–200 | GPa |
| Specific heat (0–100 °C) | ~500 | J/kg·K |
| Thermal conductivity (100 °C) | ~16.3 | W/m·K |
| Electrical resistivity | ~0.74 | µΩ·m |
316 stainless steel density comes in around 8.0 g/cm3, or roughly 8,000 kg/m3. Its melting point sits somewhere between 1,370 and 1,400 °C.
Mechanical properties (annealed)
| Property | Minimum | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 515 | MPa |
| SS 316 yield strength (0.2% proof) | 205 | MPa |
| Elongation | 40 | % |
| SS 316 hardness | ≤217 HB / ≤95 HRB | — |
For reference, the 316 stainless steel yield and tensile strength in MPa run ≥205 / ≥515 MPa in the annealed condition, and 316 hardness tops out at 217 HB / 95 HRB annealed as well.
To convert these into weight per sheet, check our SS sheet weight chart or run the numbers through the stainless steel weight calculator.
Corrosion resistance & magnetic behaviour
SS 316's corrosion resistance is the whole reason the grade exists. That 2–3% molybdenum content pushes the pitting and crevice-corrosion threshold well above 304, which is why 316 holds up in chloride environments, coastal and seawater spray, and most chemical and pharma media that would eat through 304. That's what "marine grade" actually means in practice. Where it runs out of road is hot, concentrated chloride service. Step up to 317L (more Mo) or duplex 2205 for that.
Is SS 316 magnetic? In the annealed condition it is essentially non-magnetic. As with 304, heavy cold work (deep drawing, hard bending) can induce slight magnetism, so is SS 316 magnetic is not, on its own, a reliable grade or purity test, an MTC is. To check genuine / original jindal 316 kaise pehchane, the surest route is the MTC's molybdenum figure; see also how to identify real SS 304 for the general method.
316 vs related grades (quick guide)
| Grade | Key difference | Choose when | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| 316L | Lower carbon (≤0.03%) | Welded parts needing best weld corrosion resistance | SS 316L · 316 vs 316L |
| 316Ti | Titanium-stabilised | High-temperature strength with weld stability | SS 316Ti |
| 317L | Higher molybdenum (~3–4%) | Harsher hot-chloride / chemical service | SS 317L |
| 304 | No molybdenum | Dry / mild service where chlorides are absent | 304 vs 316 |
| 304L | No Mo, low carbon | Welded mild-service parts (cost over chloride resistance) | SS 304L |
| Duplex 2205 | Two-phase, high strength + Mo | Very aggressive chlorides, high strength needed | Duplex 2205 vs 316L |
316L keeps carbon at 0.03% or below, which gives it better weld corrosion resistance than 316; 316 in turn carries slightly higher strength. Between SS 316 and 304, the key difference comes down to molybdenum: 316 has it, 304 doesn't, and that's what makes 316 the choice for chloride exposure and marine service. Comparing 316 to 316Ti and 317L tells a similar story of trade-offs. 316Ti brings titanium into the mix for better hot strength, while 317L leans on extra molybdenum to handle harsher chloride conditions. 304L, meanwhile, is simply a low-carbon version of 304. It has no molybdenum at all, so think of it as a weld-friendly grade suited to mild service rather than anything chloride-related. Whenever salt exposure or marine air enters the picture, 316 is the grade to specify. Looking for a 316 stainless steel equivalent grade? Quote UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, or IS 6911 grade 316.

Typical applications of SS 316
SS 316 comes into play wherever chlorides, salt or harsh chemistry take 304 off the table. Typical uses include:
- Pharma & dairy equipment, process vessels, contact surfaces, CIP lines → pharma & dairy equipment.
- Chemical process plants, tanks, ducting and hardware exposed to acidic and chloride media → chemical process plants.
- Marine & coastal fittings, the classic marine grade stainless steel sheet use, in salt-laden air and spray.
Food processing brings its own headaches, wash-down chemicals and brines that need more than 304 to hold up. See dairy & food processing and kitchen equipment.
- Architecture in aggressive environments, coastal façades and fittings that must not tea-stain.

Frequently asked questions
What is SS 316 stainless steel?
SS 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel, designated UNS S31600, EN 1.4401 and IS 6911 grade 316. It carries 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum. That molybdenum content is what earns it the nickname "marine grade."
What is the chemical composition of 316?
Per ASTM A240: C is 0.08% max, Mn 2.00% max, Si 0.75% max, P 0.045% max, S 0.030% max. Cr runs 16.0-18.0, Ni 10.0-14.0, Mo 2.00-3.00, N caps at 0.10%, and iron makes up the balance. All figures given in wt%.
What is the density of SS 316?
About 8.0 g/cm³ (≈8,000 kg/m³), per standard published austenitic 316 data.
What is the melting point of 316?
The melting range is approximately 1,370–1,400 °C.
What is the yield strength and tensile strength of 316?
Annealed 316 carries a minimum 0.2% yield strength of 205 MPa. Tensile strength bottoms out at 515 MPa, and elongation must hit at least 40%. These figures come straight from ASTM A240.
Is SS 316 magnetic?
Annealed 316 is essentially non-magnetic. Heavy cold work can induce slight magnetism, though, so a magnet test alone won't tell you the grade for certain. Check the mill test certificate instead.
Why is 316 better than 304 for marine or chemical use?
The 2–3% molybdenum in 316 sharply improves pitting and crevice resistance in chlorides and coastal/marine air, where plain 304 can pit. See SS 304 vs 316.
Does 316 stainless steel rust?
316 is highly resistant to corrosion in chlorides and most chemicals, and it won't rust under normal marine or process conditions. For hot, concentrated chloride environments, though, skip it and step up to 317L or a duplex grade.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
316L runs lower carbon (0.03% or under), which is why it handles corrosion better in welded parts. 316, on the other hand, brings a bit more strength to the table. For a closer comparison, see SS 316 vs 316L and SS 316L.
Is 316 food grade or medical grade?
316 stainless is what you'd call food grade. It sees heavy use across pharma, dairy, food-processing, and surgical or medical hardware. For more detail, check our food-grade stainless steel guide.
What is the difference between SS 316 and 304L?
304L is a low-carbon 304 with no molybdenum, a weld-friendly grade for mild service. 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum for chloride and marine resistance, so choose 316 whenever salt or marine air is present.
Do you supply genuine Jindal 316 with MTC?
Yes, as a Jindal Stainless MoU partner we supply genuine JSL-melted 316, and a mill test certificate confirming the molybdenum content is shared with the material. Request a sample MTC through the RFQ form.
What is the price of 316 per kg?
We publish an indicative, dated ₹/kg rate by thickness on the SS 316 sheet price page. The exact rate gets confirmed on RFQ.
