SS 201 Stainless Steel: Composition, Properties & Sheet Supply (Jindal Stainless)
201 is an austenitic 200-series chrome manganese (Cr-Mn) stainless steel (UNS S20100, EN 1.4372) that leans on manganese and nitrogen to stand in for part of the nickel. That makes it a cheaper, low-nickel alternative to 304 for indoor, decorative and light-duty jobs. Chromium sits at 16–18%, nickel at just 3.5–5.5%. Grade 201 stainless steel costs less than 304, but its corrosion resistance is somewhat weaker, so it's suited to dry indoor service: utensils, kitchen equipment, furniture, decorative panels. Coastal or wet chloride environments are off the table. Below you'll find the full 201 stainless steel composition, physical and mechanical data, and sources for genuine Jindal 201.
Relinox Stainless is an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. This is JSL stainless, not Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it's not SAIL Salem either. We supply genuine JSL-melted Jindal SS 201 flat product, not re-rolled bazaar "200-series" stock of unknown composition. Mill test certificates come standard, and we ship from Delhi to pan-India.

What is SS 201 stainless steel?
SS 201: what is it, exactly? It's the flagship of the 200 series stainless steel family, an austenitic Cr-Mn stainless where manganese (5.5–7.5%) and nitrogen (up to 0.25%) stand in for part of the nickel you'd normally find in the 300-series. Nickel is the priciest alloying element in the mix, so this 201 low nickel stainless formula cuts cost and smooths out price swings, all while holding onto the austenitic structure that gives it that largely non-magnetic, formable character. You'll see it written as ss 201, 201 ss, type 201, aisi 201, or 1.4372. Either way, it sits at the entry point of the 200 series, one rung below 304.
So what is 201 stainless steel, in practice? It's a chrome manganese (Cr-Mn) stainless that acts like a budget austenitic. Good formability, a bright finish for indoor and decorative work. But the chromium and nickel content sits lower than 304, so the corrosion envelope is tighter. Picture it as a chain: stainless leads to austenitic, austenitic leads to the 200-series (Cr-Mn), and 200-series leads to 201, one step below the 300-series benchmark. Full designations, composition and properties come next.
Designations & equivalents (UNS S20100 / EN 1.4372)
The 200-series Cr-Mn designation from IS 6911 covers the standard numbers below, which also turn up under uns s20100 or 1.4372. As a 201 stainless steel equivalent grade, think of it as sitting among the other Cr-Mn 200-series grades, namely 202, 204Cu and J4; the Cr-Ni benchmark one tier above it is 304.

SS 201 chemical composition
The 201 stainless steel composition below uses the standard published limits per ASTM A240 (mirrored by IS 6911) for UNS S20100, see the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard. The defining features of the 201 stainless steel composition percentage are high manganese and nitrogen with reduced nickel: this is the cr mn ni content balance that lets 201 undercut 304 on cost while holding an austenitic structure.
| Element | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | — | 0.15 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 5.50 | 7.50 |
| Silicon (Si) | — | 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | — | 0.060 |
| Sulphur (S) | — | 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.0 | 18.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 3.50 | 5.50 |
| Nitrogen (N) | — | 0.25 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance | |
Against 304 (8–10.5% Ni, ~18–20% Cr), 201 swaps out nickel for manganese and nitrogen instead. Jindal Stainless confirms the actual heat analysis on the mill test certificate (MTC) that comes with the material.
SS 201 physical & mechanical properties
Physical properties (density)
The 201 stainless steel density sits close to other austenitics. The figures below are standard published values for the 200-series Cr-Mn family.
| Physical property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.8–7.9 g/cm³ (≈ 7,800–7,900 kg/m³) |
| Structure | Austenitic (Cr-Mn, nitrogen-strengthened) |
| Magnetic response (annealed) | Essentially non-magnetic |
| Work-hardening rate | Higher than 304 |
For 201 stainless steel density g/cm3 or kg/m3 used in weight-per-sheet maths, see the SS sheet weight chart and the stainless steel weight calculator.
Mechanical properties (annealed)
The 201 stainless steel yield and tensile strength MPa figures below reflect the annealed minimums set out in ASTM A240. Nitrogen strengthening gives annealed 201 a higher yield than annealed 304, and its steeper work-hardening rate pushes strength up further as it's formed. Also listed: the 201 stainless steel hardness HB / HRB maximum.
| Property (annealed, per ASTM A240) | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 515 MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% proof), min | 260 MPa |
| Elongation, min | 40% |
| Hardness, max | 241 HB / 100 HRB |
Corrosion resistance & magnetic behaviour
On 201 corrosion resistance, the honest answer to "does 201 stainless steel rust" is that it holds up fine in dry, indoor and mildly humid settings. It just carries less chromium and nickel than 304, so its corrosion envelope is narrower. Keep it out of coastal, chloride, marine or wet aggressive service; for those, step up to 304 or 316. Indoors, kept dry, 201 will stay bright and clean for years.
Is SS 201 magnetic? In the annealed condition, 201 is essentially non-magnetic, much like other austenitics. That said, 201 stainless steel magnetic response shows up more readily than in 304 after cold work (bending, deep drawing, roll-forming), since the Cr-Mn austenite is less stable. A slight magnetic pull on a formed 201 part is normal, it's not a sign of "fake" stainless.
On food contact: 201 shows up constantly in utensils and indoor kitchenware, so if you're asking "is ss 201 food grade" or whether it's "safe for utensils," the answer is generally yes for dry, indoor cookware and serving pieces. Wet food processing, dairy work, or anything near the coast is a different story, 304 is the better choice there. For the full picture, see food-grade stainless steel.
SS 201 vs related grades (quick guide)
Short head-to-head blocks below; deeper comparisons live on the sibling pages.
- ss 201 vs 304, the core question of 201 or 304 which is better depends on environment: 201 is cheaper (less nickel) and indoor-friendly; 304 has better corrosion resistance and ductility for wet/outdoor/food-processing use. Full breakdown: SS 201 vs 304 guide.
- ss 201 vs 202, the difference 201 and 202 is that 202 generally carries higher manganese and nickel, giving slightly better formability and corrosion; see SS 202 and the SS 202 vs 304 guide.
- ss 201 vs 204cu, 204Cu adds copper for easier deep-drawing (utensil bodies); see SS 204Cu.
- 201 vs j4, Jindal's J4 is an economy 200-series grade tuned for utensils; see Jindal J4 and the wider Jindal J-series.
| Grade | Key difference vs 201 | Choose when | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304 | Cr-Ni; ~8–10.5% Ni, better corrosion/ductility | Wet, outdoor, food-processing, coastal | SS 304 |
| 202 | Higher Mn/Ni than 201 | Slightly better formability/corrosion, still 200-series | SS 202 |
| 204Cu | Copper-added, deep-draw | Drawn utensil bodies | SS 204Cu |
| J4 | Jindal economy 200-series | Cost-first utensil/kitchenware | Jindal J4 |

Frequently asked questions
What is SS 201 stainless steel?
201 stainless is an austenitic, 200-series Cr-Mn alloy, designated UNS S20100 and EN 1.4372. It swaps in manganese and nitrogen for a portion of the nickel. That's what keeps costs down next to 304, making it a low-nickel option suited to indoor work and decorative trim.
What is the chemical composition of 201?
Per ASTM A240, the standard limits run C at 0.15% max, Mn between 5.5 and 7.5%, Cr from 16 to 18%, Ni from 3.5 to 5.5%, N at 0.25% max, and Si at 1.0% max, with iron making up the rest. The mill test certificate confirms the actual heat analysis.
How is 201 different from 304?
201 carries less nickel than 304 (3.5–5.5% against 8–10.5%) and packs in more manganese and nitrogen. That mix keeps costs down, though it does cost you some corrosion resistance and ductility along the way. For the full breakdown, check the SS 201 vs 304 guide.
What is the density of SS 201?
About 7.8–7.9 g/cm³, or roughly 7,850 kg/m³, which puts it near other austenitic stainless grades. For weight-per-sheet figures, check the weight chart or run the calculator.
What is the yield and tensile strength of 201?
In the annealed condition, per ASTM A240: yield strength of 260 MPa or higher, tensile strength of 515 MPa or higher, and elongation of at least 40%. Nitrogen strengthening pushes annealed 201's yield above that of annealed 304.
Is SS 201 magnetic?
It's essentially non-magnetic when annealed, but cold working, bending or deep drawing, makes it turn magnetic more readily than 304. A slight magnetic pull on a formed 201 part is normal.
Does 201 stainless steel rust?
It resists dry, indoor atmospheres, but it doesn't hold up to corrosion as well as 304 does. Skip it for coastal, chloride or wet aggressive service; go with 304 or 316 instead.
Is 201 food grade or safe for utensils?
It generally works well for utensils and indoor kitchenware, and it's a solid choice for dry, indoor cookware and serving pieces. But for wet food processing, dairy work or anything near the coast, 304 is the food-contact grade you want.
201 vs 202, what is the difference?
Both are Cr-Mn 200-series grades. Grade 202 generally carries higher manganese and nickel than 201, which gives it slightly better formability and corrosion resistance. See the SS 202 page.
