Jindal SS 410 & 410S Sheet: Martensitic Stainless (Hardenable, 12% Cr): Composition, Properties, Uses & Supply

410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel, sitting around 11.5–13.5% chromium, with no nickel, and it hardens through heat treatment (type 410, UNS S41000 / EN 1.4006). It stays magnetic in every condition and can be quench-hardened and tempered to roughly 40–45 HRC. That's what makes it the classic base for cutlery and knife blades, fasteners, valve and pump parts. 410S (UNS S41008 / EN 1.4000) is the low-carbon variant, with carbon capped at 0.08%. It won't harden by heat treatment, but it welds and forms better, and it's the go-to for heat- and oxidation-resistant petrochemical parts.

This page lays out the full composition, mechanical, physical and hardness data for 410 stainless steel and 410s stainless steel sheet, side by side. You'll find honest corrosion limits, available forms and finishes, and guidance on how to buy genuine Jindal material, including HR product.

Relinox Stainless holds an MoU partnership with Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. It isn't affiliated with Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which operate in carbon-steel and pipe businesses, and it has no ties to SAIL Salem either. Both 410 and 410S sit on the core verified-Jindal grade set. That's why we supply genuine JSL-melted jindal ss 410 sheet, coil and patta, each backed by mill test certificates.

What is SS 410 stainless steel?

SS 410 (also written grade 410, AISI 410, type 410, 410 SS or 410 stainless steel) sits at the entry level of the martensitic stainless family. It carries roughly 12% chromium, enough to earn the "stainless" label, and the carbon content runs high enough (0.08–0.15%) that the grade responds to quenching and tempering. That's not something you can say about the ferritics and austenitics. There's no intentional nickel in the mix. It's always magnetic. And its hardness as supplied comes from heat treatment, not from any guarantee baked in during rolling. People reach for 410 stainless steel in cutlery, knife blades, fasteners, bolts, valve and pump internals, shafts, springs and wear parts, anywhere mild corrosion resistance paired with hardness matters more than the wet-corrosion performance you'd get from 304.

410S (also written ss 410s, 410 s, 410s ss or 410s stainless steel sheet) shares the same roughly 12% chromium base as its counterpart, but it's the low-carbon, non-hardenable version. Carbon stays capped at 0.08%, so it won't harden and crack during welding or under heat in service. That's why manufacturers pick it for weldable parts that need to resist heat and oxidation. Full designations, composition, properties, hardness figures and a 410-vs-410S decision guide follow below.

410 vs 410S: quick difference

People ask this in a few forms: 410 vs 410S, or simply what separates the two. The answer sits in carbon content and how each responds to heat treatment. Plain 410 carries enough carbon for quench-and-temper hardening, which is why it shows up in blades, fasteners and parts built to resist wear. 410S is different. Its carbon stays below 0.08%, so it won't harden the same way. That trade-off pays off elsewhere: it welds cleanly, resists cracking, and holds up better against oxidation at high temperatures, making it the grade of choice for heat-service welding work. Chromium content lands near 12% in both. Both are magnetic. Neither contains nickel.

410 & 410S chemical composition

The 410 stainless steel composition below follows the standard published limits per ASTM A240 for type 410 (UNS S41000) and 410S (UNS S41008); see the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard. What really defines this ss 410 chemical composition, and the figure buyers actually hunt for in the 410 grade composition %, is roughly 12% chromium paired with tightly controlled carbon. 410 carries enough carbon to deliver hardenability. 410S keeps carbon low instead, which is what gives it weldability. As for 410s composition and 410s chemical composition, that carbon ceiling is the one thing that actually changes.

410 mechanical & physical properties

The below-annealed minimums for ss 410 properties come straight from ASTM A240, covering type 410 and 410S sheet, strip and plate. Tensile, yield, elongation and hardness in the annealed state make up these 410 mechanical properties, and they're what you specify against your indent. HR 410 picks up its working hardness later, through heat treatment, which the next section covers.

Elongation, min≥ 20%≥ 22%
Hardness, max (annealed)≤ 217 HBW / ≤ 96 HRB≤ 183 HBW / ≤ 89 HRB

For ss 410 density, 410 melting point and the 410 hardness value, treat these as physical constants. If you're wondering is ss 410 magnetic or 410 stainless magnetic or not, check the physical table for the answer. These are the 410 physical properties most often specified. 410 and 410S are martensitic grades, so they stay magnetic whether annealed or hardened.

Hardness & heat treatment: is 410 hardenable?

Yes: is 410 hardenable is one of the defining facts of the grade. You harden 410 by heating it to austenitising temperature, quenching it, then tempering, that's the 410 heat treatment route, and it's what produces a 410 hardened structure. Depending on the treatment, 410 hrc hardness reaches roughly 40–45 HRC (up to about 500 HB). That's what makes it usable for blades, wear parts and fasteners. In the annealed condition, though, it's soft (≤ 96 HRB). 410S can't be hardened by heat treatment at all, since its carbon content is too low; it gets used soft instead. Hardened hardness is a treatment outcome specified against your job, not something we print as an as-supplied guarantee. Target hardened-condition values get confirmed against your indent per Jindal Stainless published data.

Is 410 magnetic? Corrosion & rust resistance

410S remains ferromagnetic under every condition, same as its cousin. So yes, a magnet grabs both 410 and 410S without hesitation, martensitic stainless just works that way.

On ss 410 corrosion resistance, it pays to be honest about it. With roughly 12% chromium, no molybdenum, and no nickel added on purpose, 410 gives you only moderate protection. It handles mild atmospheric exposure fine. Fresh water, steam, some mild chemicals, food acids, all within its comfort zone. Hardened, tempered, and polished is where it performs best; skip that finishing and you're asking for trouble.

Rust is the other common worry, the does 410 rust and 410 rust resistance question. Left uncoated, 410 can stain or corrode in chloride-heavy, coastal, marine, or otherwise aggressive wet environments. It gives up ground to 304 here, mostly because its chromium content sits near the floor of what counts as stainless, and there's no nickel to help carry the load. For those kinds of duties, it simply isn't the right choice.

On 410 vs 304 corrosion: 304 wins by a clear margin, thanks to higher chromium and roughly 8% nickel. Need real wet-corrosion resistance, or you're working in food or marine settings? Step up to the austenitic grades, check out 304 austenitic step-up grade and SS 316. Go with 410 or 410S when hardness, wear resistance, or high-temperature oxidation matters most and mild corrosion is tolerable. Pick 304 when wet corrosion is the actual concern.

SS 410 vs 420, 430, 409 & 304: quick guidance

Because RAT Infotech Foundry Steel doesn't have a dedicated comparison guide for these grades, we'll cover the ss 410 vs 420, 410 vs 430, 410 vs 409 and 410 vs 304 questions right here, with links out to each sibling grade page. 410 is the general-purpose hardenable 12Cr martensitic. 420 cutlery / hardenable martensitic grade carries higher carbon, which gives it harder, sharper cutlery edges. 430 basic ferritic grade is non-hardenable and ferritic, with more chromium for appearance and trim work. 409 / 409M exhaust & bus-body grade is a Ti-stabilised ferritic built for exhaust systems and bodywork. And 304? That's the austenitic step-up for corrosion resistance and food-grade use.

Applications of grade 410 & 410S

Grade 410 earns its keep anywhere hardness and wear resistance have to survive mild corrosion. Typical ss 410 applications and 410 uses cover cutlery and kitchen knife blades (410 for knives, cutlery and blades), fasteners and bolts, valves, pump parts, shafts, springs, wear components, and non-critical surgical or dental tooling. The hardness comes from heat treatment.

410S is different: non-hardenable and weldable, it handles the heat side of things. 410s uses include weldable, 410s heat resistant, and 410s weldable parts such as petrochemical and refinery internals, annealing covers, and oxidation-service components. That's exactly where 410 would harden and crack.

Hardened, tempered and polished 410 has been a mainstay for cutlery and knife blades for decades. Wet, acidic or heavy-duty food processing is another matter, though, there, 304 wins out over 410. Match the grade to the job.

SS 410 sheet price per kg (indicative)

Stainless prices move daily, so we don't print a fixed rate here. 410 is a leaner alloy than 304 (no nickel, lower/leaner chromium), which means the ss 410 sheet price normally sits below 304. Even so, the 410 ss sheet price per kg still hinges on chromium and LME movement, finish, thickness, quantity and freight. For an indicative 410 stainless steel price, 410 sheet rate, ss 410 rate today, 410 patta rate or 410s price, check the dated indicative ₹/kg price list, or send your requirement through the RFQ form to confirm the current rate for your grade, size and quantity. Frequently asked questions

What is SS 410 stainless steel?

SS 410 is a workhorse martensitic stainless, roughly 11.5–13.5% chromium, no nickel, and hardenable. It carries the designation UNS S41000 / EN 1.4006. It's magnetic, and heat treatment can push it to high hardness, which is exactly why it's long been the go-to base for cutlery, fasteners and valve parts.

What is the difference between 410 and 410S?

410S is a low-carbon variant (C ≤ 0.08%) that can't be hardened by heat treatment, but it welds more easily and sees service in heat, oxidation and mild-corrosion applications. 410, by contrast, carries higher carbon (0.08–0.15%) and hardens through quenching and tempering.

Is 410 stainless steel magnetic?

Being martensitic, 410 (and 410S) is magnetic in both the annealed and hardened conditions, so a magnet will stick to it. That's not true of the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades such as 304.

Is 410 stainless steel hardenable?

Quenching and tempering can harden 410 to roughly 40–45 HRC, though the exact figure depends on the treatment. 410S, on the other hand, can't be hardened by heat treatment at all, since its carbon content is too low.

What is the chemical composition of grade 410?

Chromium runs 11.5–13.5% and carbon 0.08–0.15%, with no nickel added on purpose, per ASTM A240 (see the composition table). 410S carries the same chromium range, but carbon is capped at ≤ 0.08%.

Does 410 stainless steel rust?

410 holds up well against mild atmospheric exposure, fresh water and mild-acid service, particularly when hardened, tempered and polished. It's a different story near chlorides, though. In coastal or otherwise aggressive wet environments, it can stain or even rust. For that kind of duty, 304 or 316 is the better choice.

What is the hardness of 410 stainless steel?

Around ≤96 HRB when annealed, climbing to roughly 40–45 HRC once hardened and tempered. That hardened number comes from the heat-treatment process, not something HR guarantees as-supplied.

What is 410 stainless steel used for?

Cutlery and knife blades, fasteners, valve and pump parts, shafts, springs, wear and mild-corrosion components, and non-critical surgical or dental tooling all draw on CR grade 410. 410S, by contrast, gets used where welding and heat or oxidation resistance matter most, in things like petrochemical internals and annealing covers.

Is 410 stainless steel food grade?

Cutlery and knife-blade steel of this kind has been hardened and polished for years, a real workhorse in the trade. But for wet, acidic or heavy-duty food processing jobs, go with 304 rather than 410.

What is the price of 410 SS sheet per kg?

Chromium and LME pricing drive the 410 rate, along with finish, thickness, quantity and freight. It's a leaner alloy than 304, so it typically costs less. Check the indicative price list, then confirm today's rate on the RFQ form.

Does Relinox supply genuine Jindal 410 / 410S sheet?

Yes. 410/410S counts as one of Jindal's core flat-product grades, and as an MoU partner we supply genuine JSL-melted material with mill test certificates. This isn't re-rolled bazaar stock.

What sizes, thicknesses and finishes of 410 are available?

Standard sheets come in 8x4 (1250×2500), 4x10 (1250×3050) and 5x10 (1500×3000) mm, offered in No.1, 2B and polished finishes. Plate, coil and patta round out the range. Stocked thickness runs roughly 0.3–12 mm and up, but we confirm the exact figure on enquiry, checked against your indent.

What is the HSN code / GST for 410 sheet?

410 flat products fall under the same HSN classification as other stainless steel sheets. Check the SS HSN codes & GST reference for the current code and rate. We raise GST-compliant invoices.
