Stainless Steel Sheet for Chemical Process Plants: Grade Selection & Supply (India)

For most chemical process plant equipment, specify 316L. Its molybdenum content gives the pitting and crevice resistance that chloride- and acid-bearing media demand, and the low-carbon "L" chemistry protects the weld zone. Step up to 317L for chemicals (higher molybdenum) or to duplex 2205 where the medium is more aggressive or the design calls for higher strength. Relinox supplies 316L and duplex 2205 as genuine Jindal Stainless flat products with mill test certificates. 317L is available against indent / on request. That's the short answer to which ss sheet for chemical plant duty you should be buying. The tables below map grade, form, thickness and standard to each equipment class.

Vertical process pipework in golden industrial lighting

Relinox holds authorized MoU partner status with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) for stainless flat products. That partnership doesn't extend to Jindal SAW, JSW Steel, or Jindal Steel & Power, and it has nothing to do with SAIL Salem either.

Why stainless steel in chemical process plants

Chemical service comes down to a corrosion-economy calculation. A corrosion resistant ss grade for chemicals justifies its cost premium over carbon steel or lined vessels by stretching service life, reducing unplanned shutdowns, and keeping product streams free of contamination. Stainless does this because a self-healing chromium-oxide film re-forms whenever the surface gets scratched or the process re-oxidises it. That passivity is what makes it an acid resistant stainless steel sheet across a wide range of media. The real question is never "is stainless steel resistant to acids" in some abstract sense. It's which grade holds its passive film against your specific acid, chloride level, concentration, and temperature. That's why a chemical resistant stainless steel sheet for reactors gets chosen by grade rather than bought off the shelf, and why the progression from 316L to 317L to duplex 2205 exists in the first place.

Grade selection for chemical service

The chemical resistant stainless grade ladder hangs on two things: molybdenum (Mo) for pitting and crevice resistance, and microstructure for strength and stress-corrosion resistance. Start with the recommendation table, then check it against a CR corrosion chart for your medium.

Grade Key alloying Relative pitting / crevice resistance Relative strength Typical chemical-service use Grade data
316L (UNS S31603) ~2–3% Mo, 16–18% Cr, 10–14% Ni, low carbon (per ASTM A240 / IS 6911) Good, the chemical-service workhorse Standard austenitic Reactors, tanks, piping skids, general process vessels 316L (UNS S31603) grade data
317L (UNS S31703) ~3–4% Mo (higher than 316L), low carbon Higher, stronger acid/chloride media Standard austenitic More aggressive acid streams, higher-chloride duty; supplied against indent / on request 317L for higher-molybdenum service
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205 / S31803) ~22% Cr, ~3% Mo, two-phase austenitic–ferritic (per ASTM A240) High, with strong chloride SCC resistance Roughly double 316L yield → thinner walls High-strength/high-chloride tanks, columns, exchangers duplex 2205 for strength & chloride SCC resistance
316Ti (UNS S31635) 316 + titanium stabilisation Similar to 316/316L Standard austenitic Elevated-temperature service where sensitisation is a risk 316Ti

316L in chemical service

316L is the default choice. Its molybdenum content pushes pitting and crevice resistance well past 304 in chloride and dilute-acid environments, and the low-carbon makeup keeps chromium-carbide precipitation from building up at weld zones. That's the practical reason 316L chemical resistance holds up in fabricated equipment where 316 might sensitize. For most 316L chemical plant work, process tanks, reactor internals, skids, 316L is the specification that balances corrosion life against cost. That's the everyday case for 316L for chemical plant duty. Compare the two carbon variants in our 316 vs 316L guide before you finalize anything.

When to step up to 317L

Relinox supplies 317L against indent or on request rather than routine stock, since it sits on the Jindal verify list.

When a medium's chloride or acid load goes beyond what 316L can handle comfortably, 317L is the step up. Extra molybdenum puts it in the high molybdenum stainless category, better suited to tougher sulphuric or organic-acid service and heavier chloride exposure. That's the case for 317L for chemicals, distinct from ordinary 316.

When to choose duplex 2205

Choose duplex 2205 when you need higher strength (to design thinner, lighter walls) together with superior chloride stress-corrosion-cracking resistance, the classic case for duplex for chemical plant storage and columns. Its two-phase structure roughly doubles the yield strength of 316L, so duplex 2205 chemical industry users and duplex chemical industry fabricators specify it for large tanks and heat-exchanger bodies exposed to warm chloride environments. See the duplex 2205 vs 316L guide for the decision logic.

316Ti note

For elevated-temperature service where carbide sensitisation is a concern, a titanium-stabilised 316ti chemical plant sheet holds intergranular corrosion resistance after exposure to the sensitising range. For higher continuous temperatures, the elevated-temperature neighbour grade 310S may be considered instead.

Equipment → grade & form map

This map turns the grade ladder into a specification per equipment class, including stainless steel for reactors, mixing tanks and storage tanks (chemical), and points each one to the right product form. Treat grades and thicknesses as buyer-specifiable guidance. Confirm them against your process design before you commit.

Equipment Suggested grade(s) Suggested form Notes
Reactor / column 316L; 317L or duplex 2205 for aggressive duty Plate for vessel walls; sheet for internals An ss plate for chemical reactor / pressure vessel, an acid resistant stainless steel plate, is a heavier-wall form: plate, not sheet
Storage & mixing tank 316L; duplex 2205 for large / high-chloride tanks Sheet and plate Duplex lets you thin the wall at the same strength
Heat-exchanger plate 316L; 317L / duplex for chloride duty Sheet (thin gauge) Stainless steel for heat exchanger plate (chemical) uses thin, flat, tightly-toleranced sheet
Piping skid 316L; 317L for acid lines Sheet + strip / patta-patti SS patta / patti for chemical skid covers brackets, gussets and supports on a chemical piping skid
Scrubber 316L; duplex 2205 for chloride-laden gas Sheet Stainless steel for scrubber shells and ducting; confirm condensate chemistry
ETP / effluent equipment 316L; 317L / duplex for high-chloride effluent Sheet and plate Stainless steel for ETP / effluent treatment plant sheet, grade tracks effluent aggressiveness

Thickness, size & finish guidance

Relinox supplies the standard Jindal/market range of 0.3–12 mm+ in the common stainless finishes, but wall thickness in chemical equipment isn't something a sheet supplier decides. It comes down to design: pressure, vessel size and the governing code call the shots. The table below is buyer-specifiable guidance for planning, not a Relinox spec claim. For everyday work, a 8x4 ss sheet for chemical plant (1250×2500 mm) does the job, while 4×10 and 5×10 cover larger blanks.

Equipment class Typical thickness (mm + gauge) Standard sheet size
Heat-exchanger / thin panels 0.5–1.5 mm (~26–16 gauge) 1250×2500 mm (8×4 ft)
Tank / ducting / scrubber shell 1.5–4 mm (~16–8 gauge) 1250×3050 mm (4×10 ft)
Reactor / pressure-vessel wall 3–12 mm+ (plate range) 1500×3000 mm (5×10 ft)

Typical finishes for process equipment are 2B or No.1 (mill); No.4 is chosen where cleanability is specified. See the SS finishes explained guide and the HR vs CR sheet guide to match form to duty, and check per-sheet weight on the SS sheet weight chart or the stainless steel weight calculator.

FAQ

Which stainless steel grade is best for chemical process plants?

For chemical plant work, 316L covers most service duty and stands as the best stainless steel grade for chemical plant duty. Push toward 317L or duplex 2205 when chlorides and acids get harsher, or when the application simply needs more strength. Always check the choice against a corrosion chart for your specific medium before finalizing it.

Why 316L instead of 304 in chemical service?

The molybdenum in 316L pushes pitting and crevice resistance in chloride and acid media well past 304, and the low-carbon "L" chemistry keeps weld zones from sensitising. For the full comparison, see the 304 vs 316 guide.

When do I need 317L?

When the medium's chloride or acid load pushes past what 316L can comfortably handle, 317L steps in with higher molybdenum content for that duty. It ships against indent or on request. See 317L grade data.

When should I choose duplex 2205 over 316L?

Duplex 2205 gives you higher strength, so you can design thinner, lighter walls. It also stands up better against chloride stress-corrosion cracking than 316L. For a closer look, see the duplex 2205 vs 316L guide.

Is stainless steel resistant to acids?

Its passive chromium-oxide film holds up against many acids, but how well it holds up depends on the acid type, concentration, temperature and grade. Check your specific medium against a corrosion table before specifying a grade, and confirm the choice with HR or whoever owns material approvals if the application is critical.

What thickness of SS sheet for chemical tanks and vessels?

Wall thickness isn't arbitrary. It's set by pressure, vessel size and whatever code governs the job. Relinox supplies the standard 0.3–12 mm+ range in 8×4, 4×10 and 5×10 sheet. To estimate weight, use the stainless steel weight calculator.

Do you supply genuine Jindal material with MTC for chemical plants?

Relinox is indeed a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, and MTC for chemical plant stainless comes with the material, which conforms to ASTM A240 / IS 6911. You can find details at quality & mill test certificates.

Is this Jindal Stainless (JSL) or a different "Jindal"?

Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) makes stainless flat products. It isn't Jindal SAW, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel & Power, or SAIL Salem.

What is the price of 316L sheet for a chemical plant?

Rates move with nickel/LME, grade, thickness and quantity, so nothing here is fixed. Check the dated indicative price list and confirm today's rate for 316 on RFQ.
