Jindal J-Series Stainless Steel (J1, J2/JT & JSLU Economy Grades): Supplier & Specs
Jindal Stainless developed the J-series as its own low-nickel 200-series line, built on a chrome-manganese (Cr-Mn) austenitic base. The lineup covers J1, J2 (also known as JT), and the JSLU deep-draw utility grades, JSLU DD and JSLU SD. What makes them work commercially is simple: swap out most of the nickel for manganese, copper and nitrogen, and you get a steel that costs less and holds its price steadier, even if it gives up a bit of corrosion resistance along the way.
None of these names are AISI, UNS or IS-numbered grades. They're Jindal's own trade names, so if you want a standardised point of comparison, look to the 200-series grades 201, 202 and 204Cu. This page lays out the jindal j series stainless steel family, sometimes called the jindal j1 j2 jt stainless steel economy line. You'll find each grade covered individually (J1, J2/JT, JSLU), the family's composition and properties, how it behaves magnetically and under corrosive conditions, a J1/J2/J4 comparison, the forms and sizes available from us, and where genuine J-series material can be purchased.
Relinox Stainless holds an MoU with Jindal Stainless (JSL), the mill that actually makes these proprietary grades. That makes us the authorized-channel answer to who supplies the J-series: genuine JSL-melted material, backed by mill test certificates. To be clear, Jindal Stainless (JSL) is the stainless flat-product mill in Hisar and Jajpur. It isn't Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it's not SAIL Salem either. The Jindal economy grades are their own category, separate from standardised grades like 304 or 202.

What is the Jindal J-series? (Jindal economy grades)
Jindal's J-series economy grades are a set of j series stainless steel grades built on one idea: nickel costs a fortune, so Jindal's Cr-Mn austenitic chemistry swaps in manganese, copper and nitrogen for most of it. What you get is a jindal low nickel stainless steel, a chrome manganese stainless steel grade, that holds onto the formable, largely non-magnetic austenitic structure while cutting cost and dodging price swings. Some buyers call it Jindal's utility grade stainless. Others just say jindal economy stainless steel grade.
JSLU DD sits in the family under stainless → austenitic → 200-series (Cr-Mn, low-nickel) → Jindal J-series / JSLU utility line → {J1 · J2/JT · JSLU DD · JSLU SD} → forms (sheet, coil, patta, circle). These are proprietary JSL grades, so they carry no separate AISI/UNS/IS designation. Where a standardised near-equivalent is needed, the closest family is the 200-series Cr-Mn grades: 201, 202 and 204Cu. The flagship of the line, J4, gets its own page. See Jindal J4 grade. The wider J-series around it is set out below.
Grades in the Jindal J-series (at a glance)
The table below lays out each grade in the line: headline trait, typical use, and supply status. J1 and J2/JT sit at the core as stocked economy grades, while the JSLU DD stainless steel and JSLU SD deep draw grade utility variants come only against indent.
| Grade | Type | Headline trait | Typical use | Supply status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J1 | 200-series Cr-Mn austenitic (low-nickel) | Economy base grade | Cost-sensitive dry/indoor fabrication, formed parts | Genuine JSL material, supplied |
| J2 (a.k.a. JT) | 200-series Cr-Mn austenitic (low-nickel) | Economy grade with improved formability | Pressed/formed cost-sensitive components | Genuine JSL material, supplied |
| JSLU DD (deep draw) | Jindal Stainless Utility, deep-draw variant | Tuned for deep-drawing / pressing | Deep-drawn utensil bodies, pressed parts | Available against indent / on request |
| JSLU SD | Jindal Stainless Utility, draw variant | Draw-grade utility sheet | Drawn / formed components | Available against indent / on request |
For the flagship copper-bearing utensil grade of the same line, see Jindal J4; for the wider grade library, check all stainless steel grades.
J1 stainless steel
J1 stainless steel, jindal j1 stainless steel, is the economy base grade of the line: a low-nickel Cr-Mn austenitic positioned below 304 on cost, for dry, indoor, cost-first work where 304-grade corrosion resistance is not required. We supply it as j1 ss sheet, coil, patta and circle on genuine JSL base. Because J1 is a proprietary JSL grade, its jindal j1 chemical composition and mechanical figures are per Jindal Stainless published data and confirmed on the mill test certificate supplied with the material rather than to a public ASTM/IS grade number, request a copy against your indent. For an indicative rate, see the J-series price list; to buy, send your requirement via the RFQ form.
J2 / JT stainless steel
J2 stainless steel, or jindal j2 stainless steel, belongs to the same low-nickel Cr-Mn family, but its chemistry is tuned for better formability. It's meant for pressed and formed components where cost matters. People often mix up jindal jt grade with J2, but they're the same economy grade sold under two names. So j2 / jt stainless steel and jt grade stainless steel point to one and the same material. Just like J1, the exact composition and properties of j2 / jt stainless steel come from JSL's published data and get confirmed on the MTC, not tied to any AISI/UNS number. Grade specifics get confirmed against your indent. Send the grade, size and quantity through the RFQ form, and you'll get a quote with MTC.
JSLU deep-draw grades (JSLU DD & JSLU SD)
JSLU stands for Jindal Stainless Utility, the deep-draw / drawing utility grades of the line. The jindal jslu grade family covers JSLU DD (deep draw) and JSLU SD, tuned for pressing and drawing operations such as utensil bodies and drawn components; this is Jindal's jindal deep draw stainless grade offering. Searches such as jslu dd stainless steel sheet and jslu sd stainless steel map here. These utility variants are available against indent / on request rather than held as routine stock, jindal j series available on request, so confirm the current grade, gauge and lead time on the RFQ form. For the deep-draw application itself, see utensils & kitchenware.
Composition & properties
Jindal Stainless is a proprietary JSL chemistry, not an ASTM A240 grade, so every element range and guaranteed mechanical property tied to jindal j series composition and jindal j series properties comes from Jindal Stainless's published data and gets confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC) that ships with the material. The table below lays out what each element contributes to the low-nickel Cr-Mn balance running through the whole family.
| Element | Role in the J-series (low-nickel Cr-Mn) balance |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | Kept low for formability and weldability |
| Manganese (Mn) | High, the Cr-Mn austenite former that partly replaces nickel |
| Silicon (Si) | Residual deoxidiser |
| Chromium (Cr) | Primary corrosion-resisting element (passive film); lower than 304 |
| Nickel (Ni) | Low, the defining economy feature vs the 300-series |
| Copper (Cu) | Added in the deep-draw variants to aid drawing/formability |
| Nitrogen (N) | Austenite stabiliser and strengthener |
| Phosphorus (P) / Sulphur (S) | Residual, held low |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Jindal Stainless publishes the mechanical figures below as standard reference values for the low-nickel 200-series austenitic family. The actual guaranteed figures for a given J1/J2/JT/JSLU heat come from Jindal Stainless published data and get confirmed on the MTC. As with other Cr-Mn austenitics, nitrogen strengthening tends to push the annealed yield higher than 304, and the work-hardening rate during forming runs higher too.
| Property (annealed, 200-series Cr-Mn reference) | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | ≈ 515 MPa (family reference; grade per MTC) |
| Yield strength (0.2% proof), min | ≈ 275 MPa (higher than annealed 304) |
| Elongation, min | ≈ 40% (good ductility for forming) |
| Hardness | Moderate (rises with cold work); confirmed on MTC |
| Physical / behaviour property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.9–8.0 g/cm³ (≈ 7,900–8,000 kg/m³, typical austenitic) |
| Structure | Austenitic (Cr-Mn, nitrogen-bearing; deep-draw variants copper-bearing) |
| Magnetic response (annealed) | Essentially non-magnetic |
| Corrosion class | Moderate, dry/indoor/low-aggression service |
| Finishes | 2B, No.4; BA/mirror via designer job-work |
Is j series magnetic? In the annealed condition the J-series is essentially non-magnetic like other austenitics, but a slight magnetic pull can develop after heavy cold work (bending, deep-drawing, roll-forming) because Cr-Mn austenite is less stable than 304, this is normal 200-series behaviour, not a sign of fake stainless. On corrosion, the family has a moderate, narrower envelope than 304: good for dry, indoor and mildly humid service, but it is not a substitute for SS 304 or 316 in wet, coastal, chloride-heavy or food-acid duty, see food-grade stainless steel.
How the J-series compares (J1 vs J2 vs J4, and vs 304)
This is just a short decision snippet. The deeper head-to-head comparison lives on the sibling pages. Readers keep circling back to the same handful of questions: the J1, J2, J4 difference, J1 vs J4 stainless, JSLU DD vs 304, and Jindal J-series vs 202. All of it comes down to three things: nickel level, corrosion envelope and cost.
| Grade | Nickel level | Corrosion resistance | Relative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| J1 | Low (Cr-Mn) | Moderate, indoor/dry | Lowest | Cost-first dry fabrication, formed parts |
| J2 / JT | Low (Cr-Mn) | Moderate | Lowest | Pressed/formed cost-sensitive parts |
| Jindal J4 | Low (Cr-Mn-Cu) | Moderate, indoor/dry | Low | Utensils, cookware, furniture, Jindal J4 |
| 202 | Low (4–6%) | Moderate, above 201 | Low | Indoor, decorative, railings, SS 202 |
| 304 | 8–10.5% (Cr-Ni) | High | Highest of these | Wet, outdoor, food-processing, coastal, SS 304 |
For the flagship of the line, see Jindal J4 and the dedicated J4 vs 304 comparison. For the low-nickel peers, check SS 202, SS 201 and SS 204Cu.

Typical applications
Jindal makes its J-series count wherever low-nickel steel does the job in dry, indoor settings. Take the jindal utensil grade steel sheet line: with JSLU deep-draw variants and J4 on the roster, it's a workhorse for cookware and pressed circles. That's exactly why buyers go looking for jindal j series for utensils. Common uses:
- Utensils, cookware and pressed/deep-drawn circles: see utensils & kitchenware
- Low-corrosion, cost-sensitive fabrication and engineering parts: see fabrication & engineering
- Interior, decorative and appliance panels in dry service
Where not to use the J-series: coastal, marine, chloride-heavy, wet food-processing or aggressive chemical service. Specify SS 304 or 316 there.

Why buy Jindal J-series from Relinox
Relinox Stainless holds authorized Jindal Stainless MoU channel status. As a jindal j series supplier, we stock genuine JSL-melted J-series material, not re-rolled bazaar "200-series" stock of unknown composition. Buyers come to us searching for a jindal j series dealer in india, a jindal j2 stainless steel distributor, a jslu dd sheet stockist, a jindal j1 sheet dealer, or a jindal j1 j2 trader. Plenty also search locally, and terms like jindal j series stockist delhi or jindal j series sheet supplier near me bring them to our door. We're a distributor and stockist of genuine Jindal flat product, not a steel mill. Our base sits at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets, and we dispatch pan-India.
Jindal produces these grades directly, so the trust question, is this real?, comes down to two things: sourcing through the MoU partner and the certificate itself. Every J-series dispatch ships as genuine JSL material, backed by a j series stainless steel MTC (mill test certificate) that confirms conformance to the relevant dimensional standard (ASTM A240 / IS 6911 sheet tolerances), as produced by Jindal Stainless. For more detail, see Jindal Stainless MoU partnership and quality & mill test certificates. Looking to buy locally? Check our Delhi stainless steel sheet dealer page.

Frequently asked questions
What is Jindal J-series stainless steel?
Jindal Stainless makes the J-series in-house: a low-nickel 200-series (chrome-manganese, Cr-Mn) austenitic line built for economy, covering J1, J2/JT, and the deep-draw JSLU grades. Nickel gets swapped out for manganese, copper and nitrogen in most of the mix, so cost comes down while corrosion resistance takes a hit. These are JSL trade names, not AISI/UNS-numbered grades. The closest equivalents on the standard charts are 201, 202 and 204Cu.
What is the difference between J1, J2/JT and J4?
Jindal makes all of these as economy 200-series Cr-Mn grades, and what sets them apart is composition balance and formability, not corrosion class. J1 is the economy base grade. J2, also known as JT, is tuned for forming. J4 is the copper-bearing utensil grade, and it gets its own page. Check the Jindal J4 page for the full rundown on that grade.
What is JT grade stainless steel?
JT is a Jindal designation for the J2 economy grade. The two names point to the same thing: a low-nickel Cr-Mn material used for cost-sensitive formed parts. Its exact composition follows Jindal Stainless published data, and the mill test certificate confirms it.
What are JSLU DD and JSLU SD?
JSLU stands for Jindal Stainless Utility. DD (deep draw) and SD are the drawing and pressing variants used for deep-drawn utensil bodies and pressed components. These aren't held as routine stock; Jindal supplies them against indent or on request. Confirm the current grade and lead time on the RFQ form before ordering from JSL.
Is J-series stainless steel magnetic?
The J-series is austenitic, so it's essentially non-magnetic when annealed. Heavy cold work, bending or deep-drawing for instance, can bring on a slight magnetic pull. That's normal 200-series behaviour, not a sign of fake stainless.
Is the J-series good for utensils?
For cost-sensitive, low-corrosion cookware and utensil pressing, yes. The JSLU deep-draw variants and J4 are built for exactly that job. Need food-acid resistance, or a wet or premium application? Step up to 304.
Does the J-series match 304's corrosion resistance?
No, it's an economy grade, lower in chromium and nickel than 304, meant for dry, indoor, low-aggression service. For wet, aggressive, food-contact or coastal environments, go with 304 or 316.
What is the price of Jindal J-series per kg?
Rates shift with grade, thickness, finish, quantity and nickel/LME movement. That's why we publish a dated indicative price list instead of quoting one fixed figure. Check the price list, then confirm today's rate on the RFQ form.
Do you provide a mill test certificate (MTC)?
Yes. Genuine Jindal-melted J-series material comes with a mill test certificate confirming conformance to the applicable standard, as produced by Jindal Stainless. Ask for a sample copy against your indent.
Are you an authorized Jindal J-series supplier?
Relinox partners with Jindal Stainless under an MoU. That makes us an authorized channel, not a re-roller. We supply genuine JSL-melted J-series material, and every shipment comes with mill test certificates.
What forms and sizes are available?
Sheet, coil, patta/patti and circle come on genuine Jindal base, available in standard Indian sizes such as 1250×2500 (8×4), 1250×3050 (4×10) and 1500×3000 (5×10) mm, and in various gauges. Cut-to-size shearing is available on request.
Can you deliver outside Delhi?
Yes, we ship pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point. Just send your delivery location along with your requirement on the RFQ form so we can confirm logistics.
