Jindal SS 430 Sheet: Ferritic Stainless (16% Cr): Composition, Properties, Price & Supply

UNS S43000 is Jindal-standard ferritic stainless steel, 16–18% chromium, no molybdenum, and essentially nickel-free (type 430, EN 1.4016). Being ferritic, it stays magnetic in every condition. It ranks among the more economical stainless grades and delivers a bright, decorative finish. It handles mild atmospheric exposure, indoor use, fresh water and nitric acid well, but it isn't built for chloride or marine environments. For wet, coastal or aggressive-corrosive duty, 304 is the better choice. Typical applications include appliance and automotive trim, non-corrosive kitchen equipment, utensils and dish covers, LPG shells, decorative interior panels and signage.

This page lays out the full composition, mechanical and physical data for 430 stainless steel sheet, along with honest magnetic and rust guidance, available forms, finishes such as BA, an indicative rate and how to buy genuine Jindal material.

Relinox Stainless is an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. It isn't Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it's not SAIL Salem either. SS 430 sits on the core verified-Jindal grade set. That's why we supply genuine JSL-melted jindal ss 430 sheet, coil, patta and circle, each backed by mill test certificates. No re-rolled bazaar stock here.

What is SS 430 stainless steel?

SS 430 (also written grade 430, AISI 430, type 430, 430 SS or 430 stainless steel) sits at the entry level of ferritic stainless steels and serves as the reference "chromium stainless." It runs around 16-18% chromium, with no molybdenum and next to no nickel. That mix makes it the cheapest of the common stainless grades. It also gives the metal a bright decorative finish, and it stays magnetic no matter what condition it's in. You can't harden it by heat treatment, so it's used in the annealed condition, full stop. Grade 430 fits where appearance, formability and mild-corrosion resistance carry weight and budget is tight: appliance and automotive trim, non-corrosive kitchen equipment, utensils, decorative interior cladding, signage. Chlorides, salt air and wet acids are another matter entirely, and this grade has no business there. Full designations, composition, properties and supply follow.

Designations & equivalents (UNS S43000 / EN 1.4016)

The standard designations for this grade turn up under several names: UNS S43000, EN 1.4016, X6Cr17, or just the 430 equivalent grade. Here's how they line up. In India, grade 430 falls under IS 6911, which governs stainless sheet, strip and plate, though the mill test certificate is what actually confirms the exact grade symbol.

430 stainless steel composition (UNS S43000)

The 430 stainless steel composition below uses the standard published limits per ASTM A240 for type 430 (UNS S43000), see the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard. The defining point of this ss 430 chemical composition, the 430 grade composition % buyers look up, is the 16–18% chromium with no molybdenum and only residual nickel. That high chromium with no nickel is exactly what gives 430 its economy, its magnetism and its decorative appearance.

SS 430 mechanical & physical properties

The ss 430 properties listed below are the annealed-condition minimums set out in ASTM A240 for type 430 sheet, strip and plate. Tensile strength, yield, elongation and hardness in the annealed state make up these 430 mechanical properties, and they're the numbers you specify against your indent. Since 430 is ferritic, heat treatment won't harden it. So these figures are the ones you actually work with.

Property (annealed, per ASTM A240)Value
Tensile strength, min≥ 450 MPa
Yield strength (0.2% proof), min≥ 205 MPa
Elongation, min≥ 22%
Hardness, max (annealed)≤ 183 HBW / ≤ 89 HRB

For ss 430 density, 430 melting point and the 430 hardness figure as physical constants, plus the common is ss 430 magnetic / 430 stainless magnetic or not question, check the physical table. These are the 430 physical properties most often specified. 430 is ferritic. Low thermal expansion, good oxidation resistance to about 815 °C intermittent, that combination comes with the territory.

Density≈ 7.70–7.75 g/cm³
Melting range≈ 1425–1510 °C

Is 430 magnetic? Corrosion & rust resistance

On the is ss 430 magnetic question: yes. Ferritic stainless stays ferromagnetic in every condition, so a magnet sticks firmly to 430. Compare that to the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades such as 304. Now for ss 430 corrosion resistance, be realistic about it. With 16–18% chromium but no molybdenum and no intentional nickel, 430 offers good resistance to mild atmospheric exposure, indoor environments, fresh water, nitric acid and mildly oxidising media. Still, it falls short of 304 in overall corrosion resistance. As for the common does 430 rust / 430 rust resistance question, an uncoated 430 surface can stain or surface-rust in chloride, coastal, marine or aggressive wet service. This isn't a chloride or marine grade. For those duties, step up to 304 or 316.

430 works well when appearance, formability, magnetism and cost matter and the setting is mild or indoor. Reach for an austenitic grade instead once wet corrosion, salt or food-processing chemistry enters the picture.

SS 430 vs 304 & nearby grades: quick guidance

The ss 430 vs 304 question, also asked as 430 vs 304 stainless or the difference 304 and 430, really comes down to one trade-off: 430 is the cheap, magnetic, decorative ferritic grade built for mild indoor use; 304 is the nickel-bearing austenitic grade you reach for when food contact, moisture or corrosion enter the picture. That's the short version. For the full breakdown, check the dedicated SS 304 vs 430, full comparison page, along with the 304 austenitic grade page.

For the nearby-grade questions, ss 430 vs 202, 430 vs 201, 430 vs 439 and 430 vs 410, here's the short version: 202 and 201 are 200-series austenitics, non-magnetic, with manganese swapped in for a cheaper mix. 439 is stabilised, welds better, and resists corrosion more than a plain ferritic would. 410 hardens; it's a martensitic. See the ferritic 439 / 441 / 436 sheets for that family, then the Mo-bearing 444 ferritic, the 410 stainless grade, the 202 economy grade, and SS 201 for the rest of these entities.

Applications of grade 430

Grade 430 makes sense wherever you need a bright, formable, magnetic stainless steel for mild service at low cost. Typical ss 430 applications and 430 uses cover automotive and appliance trim, non-corrosive kitchen equipment (430 for kitchen panelling, splashbacks and dry contact parts), utensils and dish-covers, LPG cylinder shells, decorative interior panels and cladding, and signage backing. Think of it as a decorative and trim grade, not one meant for wet-process work.

Kitchen equipment covers panelling, splashbacks and non-corrosive dry-service parts. See kitchen equipment.

Utensils and kitchenware includes dish-covers, utensil bodies and blanks. See utensils & kitchenware.

For automotive and railway trim, think appliance and vehicle decorative trim. See automotive / railway trim.

Wall cladding and interiors takes in decorative interior panels and cladding. See wall cladding & interiors.

Elevators and lifts. Decorative lift-cabin and cladding panels fall under this one. See elevators & lifts.

Since it's used for dry, decorative and appliance food-contact and utensil parts, 430 is used there. For wet, acidic or heavy-duty food processing, though, 304 is preferred over 430. Pick the grade to the duty.

Frequently asked questions

What is SS 430 stainless steel?

SS 430 is a basic ferritic stainless steel with 16–18% chromium, carrying essentially no nickel and no molybdenum. It's designated UNS S43000 / EN 1.4016. Cheap to produce, magnetic, and decorative, it gets used in the annealed condition for trim, utensils and interior panels.

Is 430 stainless steel magnetic?

Being ferritic, 430 is magnetic in every condition, so a magnet will stick to it. That's different from the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades, 304 among them.

Does 430 stainless steel rust?

430 handles mild atmospheric, indoor, fresh-water and nitric-acid service well enough, but it can surface-rust or stain when conditions turn chloride-heavy, coastal or otherwise aggressive and wet. For those situations, move up to 304 or 316.

What is the chemical composition of grade 430?

Chromium runs 16–18%, carbon tops out at 0.12%, and there's no molybdenum in the mix. Nickel is residual only, capped at 0.75%, all per ASTM A240. That combination of high chromium and no nickel is exactly what makes 430 cheap to produce and magnetic.

Is 430 as good as 304?

304 is more resistant to corrosion, but it costs more than 430 and isn't magnetic. For food-grade, wet or corrosive environments, 304 wins out. If the application is mild, indoor and mostly about looks, 430 does the job just fine. Check the full SS 304 vs 430 comparison for the side-by-side.

What is 430 stainless steel used for?

Automotive and appliance trim, non-corrosive kitchen equipment, utensils and dish-covers, LPG cylinder shells, decorative interior panels and cladding, elevator-cabin panels, and BA signage backing.

Is 430 food grade?

It's used for dry, decorative and appliance food-contact and utensil parts. For wet, acidic or heavy-duty food processing, though, 304 wins out over 430.

What is the price of 430 SS sheet per kg?

The 430 rate tracks chromium and LME pricing, along with finish, thickness, quantity and freight. It's a nickel-free ferritic, so it usually ends up the cheapest common stainless grade. Check the indicative price list, and confirm today's rate on the RFQ form.
