ASTM A240: Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet & Strip Standard (Grades, Composition & Tolerances)

ASTM A240 / A240M is the ASTM standard specification for chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip used in pressure vessels and general applications. For each grade, the a240 standard fixes the chemical composition limits, the minimum mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation) and the maximum hardness, plus the required heat-treated condition. Every grade carries its own UNS number. Dimensions, tolerances and other general flat-rolled requirements sit in a companion standard instead: ASTM A480/A480M. What ASTM A240 covers (scope, spec & requirements)

The astm a240 scope is flat-rolled stainless steel, plate, sheet, and strip. That includes chromium grades (both ferritic and martensitic), chromium-nickel austenitic grades, and duplex grades, all meant for pressure vessels and general fabrication work. As a full astm a240 specification, the document lays out requirements for each grade in detail.

• Chemical composition limits (the ladle/heat analysis every heat must meet);
• Mechanical property requirements, a minimum tensile strength, a minimum 0.2% yield strength, a minimum elongation and a maximum hardness;
• The required heat-treatment / annealed condition and testing basis.

Dimensional detail (thickness, width, flatness and permissible variations) doesn't appear in A240 itself. Type and UNS designations follow the standard published values under ASTM A240; supply position mirrors the Jindal catalogue. Grades on the verify list, 444 among them, are available against indent or on request, not guaranteed ex-stock. ASTM A240 chemical composition limits (representative grades)

ASTM A240 sets the chemical composition limits below (weight percent) for the flat-product grades most often specified. The 200-series grades, 201 and 202, swap in manganese and nitrogen to replace part of the nickel content. Duplex 2205 pairs high chromium with tightly controlled nitrogen to build its two-phase structure.

The mill test certificate, or MTC, confirms the actual heat analysis for your material. Jindal Stainless produced it.

ASTM A240 mechanical property requirements

The ASTM A240 mechanical properties are minimums measured in the annealed condition under ASTM A240: minimum tensile strength, minimum yield strength, minimum elongation, and a maximum hardness. Specify your indent against these limits.

Values are the standard published minima/maxima per ASTM A240; the certified test results for your heat appear on the MTC.

ASTM A240 dimensions & tolerances (via A480)

A240 itself does not carry the dimensional detail. Every astm a240 tolerance, thickness tolerance, width and flatness, is defined in ASTM A480/A480M, which applies alongside A240 for all flat-rolled stainless. So when a drawing calls up "A240 material", the thickness and flatness limits are read from A480. Buyers frequently ask about a240 vs sa240, astm a240 vs a480, a240 vs a666, a240 vs is 6911, or the a240 equivalent in another system. Here's how they actually relate. ASTM A240 and IS 6911 sit in different standards systems entirely, so a direct swap isn't always safe.
