SS 316Ti Stainless Steel Sheet: Composition, Properties & Price (Jindal, India)

Jindal Stainless makes a titanium-stabilised, molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade that goes by several names in the market: 316Ti stainless steel sheet, ss 316ti sheet, ss316ti sheet, 316 Ti, or grade 316ti. What is 316ti stainless steel, in short? Start with 316 chemistry (Cr 16–18%, Ni 10–14%, Mo 2–3%), then add a controlled amount of titanium. That titanium binds carbon as titanium carbide (TiC) rather than chromium carbide. The result: no sensitisation after welding, and none during service in the 425–815 °C range either.

Its designations run as follows: 316Ti, UNS S31635, EN 1.4571, X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2, AISI 316Ti. Relinox supplies genuine Jindal 316Ti sheet, plate, patta, coil and circle, each with mill test certificates (MTC), and ships pan-India from our base at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets. Composition and property figures below come from ASTM A240 and IS 6911, drawing on published data from Jindal Stainless (JSL).

Relinox Technical Team, using values sourced from ASTM A240, IS 6911 and Jindal Stainless published data, Jindal being the reference point throughout.

Jindal here refers specifically to Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), and only its stainless flat products. Relinox holds authorized MoU partner status with JSL. This isn't Jindal SAW, JSPL or JSW, which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and it isn't SAIL Salem either.

What is SS 316Ti stainless steel?

SS 316Ti (also 316ti, ss 316ti, 316 ti, grade 316ti) starts as 316 with titanium added on purpose. In plain 316, carbon can latch onto chromium at the grain boundaries whenever the steel gets welded or sits hot for a while, and that leaves those spots short on chromium and vulnerable to intergranular attack. Titanium binds carbon more readily than chromium does, so in 316Ti it grabs the carbon first and forms stable titanium carbide instead, that process is called stabilisation. Chromium stays put in solution, and the passive film holds up through welding and through prolonged HR at high temperature.

Where it sits in the family: stainless steel to austenitic to molybdenum-bearing (316 family) to titanium-stabilised 316Ti. It's the molybdenum-bearing cousin of 321, which stabilises 304 with titanium but skips the molybdenum. No dedicated Indian standard grade number has caught on in wide trade use, so buyers quote the 316ti uns s31635 and 316ti 1.4571 designations on orders. The 316ti din en designation is EN 1.4571 / X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2. Hindi-market buyers ask for the 316Ti patta, 316Ti patti and 316Ti chadar. All three names point to the same grade.

For a 316ti equivalent grade on a spec sheet, quote UNS S31635 / EN 1.4571. The 316ti astm reference is ASTM A240 (S31635); the 316ti en reference is EN 1.4571. A close 316ti bs equivalent maps to that same EN designation. Check ASTM A240 and IS 6911 for the standard scope.

SS 316Ti chemical composition

316Ti's chemical composition, shown below, follows ASTM A240 (S31635) and lines up with the Ti-stabilised, Mo-bearing austenitic requirement in IS 6911. Buyers cite this SS 316Ti composition when checking an MTC. Two rows carry the grade: molybdenum and titanium.

ElementMin %Max %
Carbon (C)—0.08
Manganese (Mn)—2.00
Silicon (Si)—0.75
Phosphorus (P)—0.045
Sulphur (S)—0.030
Chromium (Cr)16.018.0
Nickel (Ni)10.014.0
Molybdenum (Mo)2.003.00
Nitrogen (N)—0.10
Titanium (Ti)5 × (C + N)0.70
Iron (Fe)BalanceBalance

The titanium minimum sits at 5 × (C + N), enough to tie up all the carbon and nitrogen, with a 0.70% ceiling, per ASTM A240. The 2–3% molybdenum content carries over from 316 and is what gives 316Ti its resistance to chloride pitting. Check both figures on the MTC. Specialty grades like this one are exactly what re-rolled bazaar material tends to swap out for plain 316, often without a BA finish to match.

SS 316Ti mechanical & physical properties

Jindal Stainless / standard austenitic 316Ti published data supplies the physical constants below; the 316Ti mechanical properties themselves are annealed reference minima per ASTM A240, in line with 316-family conventions.

Mechanical properties (annealed)

PropertyRequirementUnit
Tensile strength (min)515MPa
0.2% yield strength (min)205MPa
Elongation (min)40%
Hardness (max)≤95 HRB / ≤217 HB—

The 316Ti tensile strength comes in at ≥515 MPa, and the yield (0.2% proof) sits at ≥205 MPa in the annealed state, with elongation running ≥40%. As for 316Ti hardness, it tops out at ≤95 HRB / ≤217 HB when annealed.

Physical properties

PropertyValueUnit
316Ti density~8.0 (≈8,000)g/cm³ (kg/m³)
316Ti melting point (range)~1,370–1,400°C
Magnetic responseNon-magnetic (annealed)—

The 316Ti density comes in around 8.0 g/cm³, or roughly 8,000 kg/m³. Its melting point runs somewhere between 1,370 and 1,400 °C. Alloy 316 shares much of that same profile.

Is 316Ti magnetic? No. In the annealed condition it's essentially non-magnetic, since the grade is austenitic. As with 304/316, heavy cold work can bring on a touch of magnetism, so is 316Ti magnetic or 316Ti magnetic response isn't, by itself, a reliable way to confirm the grade. The MTC is. To convert these figures into weight per sheet, use our SS sheet weight chart (the 316Ti weight per sheet / weight chart reference), or try the stainless steel weight calculator at a density of 8.0.

Corrosion resistance & high-temperature behaviour

316Ti's corrosion resistance comes down to two things. First, the 2–3% molybdenum content gives it the same chloride pitting and crevice resistance as 316, well above 304, so it holds up in coastal, marine and chemical environments. Second, and this is really why you'd pick it, the titanium stabilisation gives it much better resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. Titanium binds the carbon as TiC, so chromium carbides don't precipitate at grain boundaries during welding or during extended service in the sensitization range (~425–815 °C).

316Ti earns its keep in welded fabrications that also run hot. That's the case where 316L's low carbon content isn't enough on its own, since the part spends long stretches at high temperature. Put simply: pick 316Ti over 316/316L when a part is welded and runs hot. For welded service at ambient temperatures, 316L will usually do the job.

316Ti vs 316 vs 316L vs 321

316Ti vs 316, 316Ti vs 316L and 316Ti vs 321 all come down to two questions. Does the grade contain molybdenum? And is it stabilised against carbide precipitation? The difference is summarised below.

GradeMolybdenum?Stabilised?Best for
316TiYes (2–3%)Yes (titanium)Welded parts running hot (425–815 °C) needing chloride resistance
316Yes (2–3%)NoGeneral chloride/marine service, higher strength, non-welded
316LYes (2–3%)No (low carbon instead)Welded ambient parts (low carbon prevents weld sensitisation)
321NoYes (titanium)High-temperature welded parts where chlorides are absent

Is 316Ti better than 316? For welded, high-temperature service, yes, stabilisation keeps the weld zone corrosion-resistant. For plain ambient use, standard 316 or low-carbon 316L usually works out cheaper. See SS 316, SS 316L, SS 321 and the 316 vs 316L guide for the neighbouring grades.

Typical applications of 316Ti

316Ti earns its spot whenever a piece of equipment gets both welded and hot, or when chloride resistance and high-temperature strength have to hold up at the same time. That combination rules out plain 316.

  • Chemical & process plant, reactors, ducting and hardware in hot, acidic or chloride media → chemical process plants.
  • Pharma, dairy & food equipment, welded vessels and contact surfaces. 316Ti works well as a 316ti food grade / 316ti for pharma / dairy option when the weld needs to hold up at high temperature → pharma & dairy equipment, kitchen equipment.
  • High-temperature & welded fabrications, exhaust and thermal components, expansion joints, heat exchangers and other assemblies that operate within the sensitisation range.

Frequently asked questions

What is SS 316Ti stainless steel?

SS 316Ti is the titanium-stabilised, molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade (UNS S31635 / EN 1.4571). It starts life as 316, but titanium gets added to bind carbon as TiC, which keeps carbide sensitisation at bay. That matters most after welding and when the material sits at high temperature. ASTM A240 governs the specification.

What is the difference between 316 and 316Ti?

Both carry 2–3% molybdenum, but 316Ti throws titanium into the mix to stop intergranular corrosion in welds and high-heat service. Standard 316 skips any stabilizing element. 316L, meanwhile, leans on nothing but low carbon content to resist weld corrosion.

Is 316Ti better than 316L?

For welded parts running hot, roughly 425 to 815 °C, 316Ti's titanium stabilisation beats 316L. Low carbon alone doesn't hold up over extended time at high temperature. At ambient welded service, though, 316L usually does the job just fine.

Is 316Ti magnetic?

No, 316Ti is essentially non-magnetic when annealed, since it's austenitic. Heavy cold work can bring on a bit of magnetism, though, so a magnet test alone won't confirm the grade. Check the mill test certificate instead.

What is the chemical composition of 316Ti?

Per ASTM A240: C ≤0.08, Mn ≤2.00, Si ≤0.75, P ≤0.045, S ≤0.030, Cr 16.0–18.0, Ni 10.0–14.0, Mo 2.00–3.00, N ≤0.10, Ti from 5×(C+N) to 0.70, balance iron (all wt%).

What are the mechanical properties of 316Ti?

Annealed 316Ti carries a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa and a minimum 0.2% yield strength of 205 MPa, per ASTM A240. Minimum elongation sits at 40%. Hardness runs up to ≤95 HRB, or ≤217 HB for reference against the 316 family.

What is the price of 316Ti sheet in India?

316Ti is priced per kg. As a titanium-stabilised specialty grade, it typically sits above 316/316L. We can share an indicative rate and will confirm today's rate on RFQ. For the 316 baseline, check the SS 316 sheet price page and the BA finish notes there.

Do you supply genuine Jindal 316Ti with a test certificate?

Jindal Stainless MoU partner, so yes, we supply genuine JSL-melted 316Ti, and a mill test certificate confirms the molybdenum and titanium content in the material. Want a sample MTC? Request one through the RFQ form.

What sizes and thicknesses of 316Ti are available?

Standard sheet sizes are 8×4 (1250×2500), 4×10 (1250×3050) and 5×10 (1500×3000) mm, running from roughly 0.3 mm up to 12 mm and beyond. The exact 316Ti stock range gets confirmed on RFQ. Note this differs from standard 316 in that regard.

Can you cut 316Ti to size or supply patta and circles?

Yes, cut-to-size and shearing are available, and 316Ti patta / patti strip and circles too, some done as job-work on Jindal base material. Just send sizes through the RFQ form.

What standard does 316Ti conform to?

Jindal Stainless produces 316Ti to ASTM A240 / A240M and IS 6911 for sheet, strip and plate, with a mill test certificate included.
