Stainless Steel Sheet Sizes, Thickness & Gauge Chart (India, 2026)
Stainless steel sheet in India comes in a handful of standard sizes: 8×4 ft (roughly 2438 × 1219 mm), 4×10 ft, and 5×10 ft. Thickness runs from about 0.3 mm up to 12 mm and beyond, and suppliers quote it two ways, in millimetres and in gauge. So 16 gauge works out to roughly 1.588 mm, 18 gauge to 1.270 mm, and 20 gauge to 0.912 mm.
Below you'll find HTML-native reference tables covering standard ss sheet size (feet converted to mm), the ss sheet thickness range in mm, and a correct stainless steel sheet gauge chart (gauge mapped to mm). There's also a feet-to-mm converter. That's everything needed before putting together an RFQ for cut-to-size material.
By the Relinox Technical Team, Jindal Stainless MoU Partner, based at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's main stainless steel markets.
Jindal Stainless (JSL) supplies these flat-product figures. It's India's largest producer of stainless flat products, and the only "Jindal" this page deals with. That excludes Jindal SAW, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), those are carbon-steel and pipe businesses. SAIL Salem is out too. The sizes and gauge values shown are standard published market or reference figures. Confirm the exact stocked size, and the target mm, against your indent on RFQ.

Standard stainless steel sheet sizes in India (8x4, 4x10, 5x10)
The most common ss sheet standard size in India is 8x4, an 8x4 ss sheet (also written 4x8 ss sheet or 8 by 4 sheet size), roughly 2438 x 1219 mm and often traded as 2500 x 1250 mm. Larger stock lengths follow it. There's the ss sheet 4x10 (also 4 by 10, with the 4x10 size in mm running to about 3048 x 1219 mm), and the ss sheet 5x10 (also 5 by 10, or the 10 feet ss sheet, at roughly 3000 x 1500 mm). These cover the everyday stainless steel sheet sizes and standard ss sheet size enquiries we get. In trade terms, people ask for the ss sheet ka size, the ss chadar size, or the chaddar ka naap (SS chadar/chaddar just means sheet). Need the ss sheet full size, the max size available beyond these, or a jindal ss sheet size in particular? We cut to spec, see cut-to-size below.
| Size (ft) | Size (mm, common) | Trade name / notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 4 | 2438 × 1219 (also traded 2500 × 1250) | Most common, "8x4" |
| 10 × 4 | 3048 × 1219 (also 3050 × 1250) | "4x10 / 10 feet" |
| 10 × 5 | 3000 × 1500 | "5x10" |
| — | 2000 × 1000, 2500 × 1250, 3000 × 1500 | Other stocked mm sizes |
Larger or non-standard sizes are cut to size on RFQ. What's actually kept in stock varies with grade, finish and thickness, so check current availability against your indent.
SS sheet size in feet vs mm (and inches)
For ss sheet size in feet and ss sheet size in mm, and for ss sheet size in feet and inches conversions, the base rate stays fixed: 1 ft equals 304.8 mm. An 8×4 sheet, run through that rate, comes out to 1219.2 mm by 2438.4 mm. Ask for the ss sheet size in inches instead, and the same panel reads 96×48 inches.
| Feet | Millimetres (mm) |
|---|---|
| 1 ft | 304.8 |
| 4 ft | 1219.2 |
| 5 ft | 1524.0 |
| 8 ft | 2438.4 |
| 10 ft | 3048.0 |
Stainless steel sheet thickness (mm)
SS sheet thickness (or "ss sheet motai" in trade terms) runs across a ss sheet thickness in mm band of roughly 0.3 mm to 12 mm+ for sheet stock, so the minimum-maximum thickness most buyers ask for gets covered here. Common stocked calls include 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm ss sheet. The ss sheet thickness chart / thickness list below maps thickness bands to their typical use. Treat it as indicative guidance, not a spec.
| Thickness (mm) | Typical use band |
|---|---|
| 0.3–0.8 | Light gauge, utensils, panels, signage |
| 1.0–1.5 | Kitchen equipment, cladding, furniture |
| 2.0–3.0 | Fabrication, tanks, general engineering |
| 4.0–6.0 | Heavy fabrication (boundary to "plate") |
| 8.0–12.0+ | Plate territory → see plate page |
Sheet vs plate: the thickness boundary
Where does a sheet turn into a plate? By convention, thinner flat material is called "sheet," while thicker material, usually 4–5 mm and above, gets traded as plate. There's no single universal cutoff, though. For ss plate size and plate thickness (>5 mm), see SS plate (thicker material). Narrow flat material is a different product entirely. For ss patta / patti size and strip width, check patta/patti strip sizes; for ss coil width and coil size, see coil widths.
Stainless steel sheet gauge chart (gauge → mm)
Buyers still specify thickness in gauge, so here's the stainless steel sheet gauge chart / ss gauge chart for ss sheet gauge to mm conversion, the gauge in mm (in Hinglish, gej to mm). It covers 14 / 16 / 18 / 20 / 22 / 24 gauge ss sheet in mm and the same jindal sheet gauge chart lookups people search for. The headline figures: 16 gauge stainless steel sheet comes out to roughly 1.588 mm, and 18 gauge lands near 1.270 mm. So what is 16 gauge and how thick is 18 gauge ss both come straight off the table, no guesswork needed.
| Gauge | Thickness (mm) |
|---|---|
| 8 | 4.191 |
| 10 | 3.416 |
| 11 | 3.038 |
| 12 | 2.657 |
| 14 | 1.897 |
| 16 | 1.588 |
| 18 | 1.270 |
| 20 | 0.912 |
| 22 | 0.759 |
| 24 | 0.607 |
| 26 | 0.455 |
These are standard published stainless gauge values, the kind you'd find under Manufacturers' or US Standard listings. A quick word on swg to mm: the standard wire gauge ss (SWG) and carbon-steel MSG don't land on the same mm at a given gauge number. They diverge. So when you're working through ss sheet gauge vs mm, or trying to settle the difference gauge and mm question, always cross-check the mm value.
Is gauge or mm used for SS sheet in India?
Mills roll to a mm thickness, but the market often still talks in gauge. So the safest practice is to state the mm you actually need and treat gauge as a label, not a spec. Confirm the exact mm value on your RFQ, that's how you avoid a gauge/mm mismatch.

Weight & price of a sheet by size and thickness
This page is dimensions only, for ss sheet weight per size (e.g. 8x4 sheet weight kg), use the SS sheet weight chart (kg per 8x4) or the ss sheet weight calculator, size & thickness to kg (size to kg). For ss sheet price by thickness (₹ per mm, rate by gauge), or ss 304 / 202 sheet price per kg, see the SS sheet price by thickness page and confirm today's rate on RFQ, no rates are printed here. For tax codes, see HSN & GST codes for SS sheet.
Sizes & tolerances by standard (ASTM A240 / IS 6911)
Dimensional and thickness tolerances for stainless flat products are governed by ASTM A240 / A480 and, in India, IS 6911 (with dimensions via the companion IS 1730), Jindal material is rolled to these. For the standards themselves, see dimensional standards & tolerances, ASTM A240 and IS 6911. Whether you buy hot- or cold-rolled affects finish and available thickness, see HR vs CR sheet.

Frequently asked questions
What are the standard sizes of a stainless steel sheet in India?
8×4 ft (≈2438 × 1219 mm) remains the most common size; 4×10 ft and 5×10 ft rank as the larger standard sheets. Anything bigger or off the standard grid gets produced via cut-to-size on RFQ.
What is 8x4 sheet size in mm?
An 8×4 sheet works out to roughly 2438 × 1219 mm (8 ft equals 2438.4 mm, 4 ft equals 1219.2 mm). Some markets sell it instead as 2500 × 1250 mm. Either way, that's about 96 × 48 inches.
What thickness range do SS sheets come in?
Sheet stock typically runs from 0.3 mm up to 12 mm or more, with 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm being the sizes people actually order. Once you get past roughly 4-5 mm, the material tends to get sold as plate instead.
What is 16 gauge stainless steel in mm?
16 gauge stainless steel comes in at roughly 1.588 mm on the standard stainless (Manufacturers') gauge. Check the exact mm figure on your RFQ, because SWG and carbon-steel gauges don't line up the same way at the same gauge number.
What is 18 gauge / 20 gauge in mm?
20 gauge and 18 gauge sit on the standard stainless gauge chart at roughly 0.912 mm and 1.270 mm. Check the gauge → mm chart above for the full 8 to 26 gauge range.
Is gauge or mm used for SS sheet in India?
Mills roll to a millimeter thickness, but the market often quotes gauge instead. Both terms are in use. Specify the mm you need, treat gauge as just a label, and confirm the exact mm value on your RFQ.
Is SS sheet gauge the same as carbon steel gauge?
No. Stainless (Manufacturers' Standard) and standard wire gauge (SWG) give different mm values at the same gauge number. So don't trust the gauge number alone; always cross-check the millimetre figure.
What is the difference between a sheet and a plate?
Thickness is what settles it: thinner flat stock counts as "sheet," while thicker material, usually starting around 4–5 mm, gets traded as "plate." There's no single universal cutoff between the two.
Can I get a sheet cut to a custom size?
Cutting and shearing job-work is available, so any size within the stocked range can be cut to spec. Send your size, thickness, grade and finish via the RFQ form for a cut-to-size quote.
How much does a sheet of a given size weigh or cost?
For weight, use the SS sheet weight chart or the weight calculator; for pricing, see the SS sheet price by thickness page and confirm today's rate on RFQ. This page carries dimensions only.
Do you supply genuine Jindal material with test certificates?
Relinox holds an MoU partnership with Jindal Stainless, and each shipment leaves with a mill test certificate (MTC) covering heat analysis and mechanical results, sent along at dispatch.
