SS Sheet Weight Chart (kg): Stainless Steel Sheet Weight by Size & Thickness

A standard 8×4 ft (≈2438 × 1219 mm) stainless steel sheet in grade 304 weighs about 23.8 kg at 1 mm thick, and weight scales linearly with thickness. Bump it to 2 mm and you're at 47.6 kg; go to 3 mm and it's 71.4 kg. This is the full ss sheet weight chart in kg. It covers weight per sheet by size, thickness, and grade, includes the weight formula, a per-sq-ft chart, and a chequered plate chart. Everything's HTML-native, free to download, and free to cite. Use it to cost, order, and freight your material before you raise an RFQ.

By the Relinox Technical Team, Jindal Stainless MoU Partner, headquartered at Ajmeri Gate, among the busiest stainless steel markets in Delhi.

These figures cover Jindal Stainless (JSL) flat products, India's largest stainless flat-product producer. It's also the only "Jindal" this page concerns. Jindal SAW, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) are carbon-steel and pipe businesses, and they don't belong here, nor does SAIL Salem. All weights are nominal (theoretical) values, computed from standard published densities. Actual weight varies with rolling thickness tolerance per ASTM A240 / IS 6911, so confirm against the mill test certificate (MTC) or weighbridge before relying on them.

Stainless steel sheet weight chart in kg (master chart)

Jindal's stainless steel sheet weight chart below lists kg per sheet for the three standard Indian sizes, 8x4 ft, 4x10 ft and 5x10 ft, across the full thickness band, for austenitic grades at a density of 8.00 g/cm³. Call it the ss sheet weight chart 304 if you like; the same figures work as the ss 316 sheet weight chart too, because 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321 and 310S all share that 8.00 g/cm³ austenitic density. It doubles as the jindal ss sheet weight chart for those grades. Working with 200-series material instead (the ss 202 sheet weight chart), or a ferritic or duplex grade? Apply the density factor from the reference table in the next section, or just jump to the dedicated 8x4 chart further down.

The 8x4 and 4x10 columns use true ft-to-mm dimensions: 2438 x 1219 mm and 3048 x 1219 mm. The 5x10 column, on the other hand, uses the standard 1500 x 3000 mm plate. There's also a nominal 2500 x 1250 mm cut traded under the 8x4 label.

The same chart doubles as an ss plate weight chart for the heavier rows (thicker flat material is traded as plate, see the plate note below). Reading off a single value, the ss sheet 1mm weight, 1.5mm or 2mm weight for an 8×4 sheet, is a matter of finding the thickness row. For 4x10 ss sheet weight and 5x10 ss sheet weight, use the respective columns. Prefer an interactive lookup? Use the stainless steel weight calculator. A downloadable ss sheet weight chart pdf is not needed, the HTML tables here are copy-, print- and CSV-ready (see the download note below).

SS sheet weight formula and density

The ss sheet weight formula, the answer to how to calculate ss sheet weight, is:

Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)

Area in m² times thickness in mm times density in g/cm³ gives kilograms directly, so there's no unit conversion needed. Worked example, take an 8×4 ft sheet (2.4384 m × 1.2192 m), 2 mm thick, grade 304 (density 8.00 g/cm³):

InputValue
Length2.4384 m
Width1.2192 m
Thickness2 mm
Density (304)8.00 g/cm³
Weight2.4384 × 1.2192 × 2 × 8.00 = 47.57 kg

The density values used are standard published figures (per ASTM A240 / IS 6911 and JSL published data). Nothing here is invented. Still, confirm the exact per-grade density against your indent where it matters.

Grade bandGradesDensity (g/cm³)
Austenitic304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 310S8.00
200-series201, 202, 204Cu, J47.80
Ferritic430, 409, 439, 4417.70
Duplex22057.80

Because 202/201 come in at roughly 7.80 g/cm³ versus about 8.00 for 304, a 200-series sheet ends up a bit lighter, around 2–3% less per sheet, same size, same thickness.

8x4 SS sheet weight (quick reference)

The 8x4 ss sheet weight is the figure people ask about most, so here's the 8x4 ss sheet weight in kg, broken down by thickness and grade (the 4x8 ss sheet weight comes out the same, since it's the same sheet either way round). The columns cover 304 and 316, both austenitic at 8.00 g/cm³, plus 202, a 200-series grade at 7.80 g/cm³.

SS sheet weight by gauge (SWG/BG → mm → kg)

For ss sheet weight by gauge, the gauge to kg lookup, start by converting the gauge number to a millimetre thickness. Then read the weight off the master chart. Here are the headline conversions:

GaugeThickness (mm)8×4 304, kg (approx)
161.58837.77
181.27030.20
200.91221.69
220.75918.05

For SS sheets, sizes run from 8 gauge to 26 gauge under SWG/BG standards, and the full mm conversion table lives on the SS sheet sizes, thickness & gauge chart page. This page handles weight calculations; that one handles gauge lookups.

SS sheet weight per square foot and per m²

For SS sheet weight per sq ft (also written per square foot), the chart below gives kg per sq ft by thickness and grade band, including the 304 SS sheet weight per square foot most buyers ask for (1 mm 304 ≈ 0.74 kg/sq ft). Multiply by the sheet's area in sq ft to get kg per sheet. An 8×4 sheet, for reference, is 32 sq ft.

4.02.972.902.86
5.03.723.623.58
6.04.464.354.29

On the metric side, the ss sheet weight per meter, really the ss sheet weight per sq meter, comes down to a simple rule: for a 304 sheet, 1 mm weighs 8.00 kg/m² (density in g/cm³ equals kg/m² per mm of thickness). Double the thickness to 2 mm and you get 16.0 kg/m². Drop to 1.5 mm and the figure lands at 12.0 kg/m².

SS chequered plate weight chart

An SS chequered plate weight chart begins with the flat-sheet base weight, then adds an allowance for the raised pattern. The embossed diamonds and teardrops carry extra metal, so a chequered plate always comes out heavier than a plain sheet of the same base thickness. Here are the base weights (8×4 ft, austenitic, 8.00 g/cm³):

Base thickness (mm)8×4 base, kg/sheetBase, kg/sq ft
2.047.571.49
2.559.461.86
3.071.352.23
4.095.132.97
5.0118.923.72
6.0142.704.46

The chequered sheet weight per sq ft, then, is the base figure above plus the pattern allowance. That allowance depends on pattern depth and pitch, and it varies by mill, so we don't quote a single uplift number here. Confirm the pattern-weight allowance for your specific plate on RFQ or against its MTC. For commercial chequered plate, see SS chequered sheets.

Patta/patti strips & plate

Narrow flat material and thick plate weigh by the exact same formula. For an ss patta / patti weight chart, apply Weight = L × W × t × density to your strip's width and length, or see patta/patti strips for stocked widths. For heavier flat material beyond the sheet band, the heavier rows of the master chart act as your plate weights; for products and thicknesses above the sheet range, see stainless steel plates.

Nominal 2500 × 1250 mm weights (the common Indian "8x4" cut)

Much of the Delhi market cuts "8x4" as a nominal 2500 × 1250 mm sheet rather than true-foot 2438 × 1219 mm. Both are correct, ask which cut you are being quoted. At 1.0 mm in SS 304 the true-foot sheet weighs 23.8 kg and the nominal sheet 24.8–25.0 kg; the ~5% difference is exactly the area difference.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an 8x4 SS sheet weigh?

An 8×4 ft (≈2438 × 1219 mm) grade-304 sheet comes in at roughly 23.8 kg when it's 1 mm thick. Weight tracks thickness in a straight line, so a 1.5 mm sheet runs about 35.7 kg, and at 2 mm you're looking at around 47.6 kg. Check the 8x4 quick chart above for other thicknesses and grades.

How do you calculate SS sheet weight?

Weight (kg) equals Length (m) times Width (m), times Thickness (mm), times Density (g/cm³). Simple enough. Take an 8×4 ft, 2 mm, 304 sheet as an example: multiply 2.4384 by 1.2192, by 2, by 8.00. The result comes to 47.57 kg.

What is the density of stainless steel?

About 8.00 g/cm³ for 304/316 and other austenitic grades, about 7.80 g/cm³ for 200-series (201/202/204Cu/J4) and duplex 2205, and about 7.70 g/cm³ for 430 and other ferritic grades. These figures come from standard published values, namely ASTM A240, IS 6911, and JSL published data.

What is the weight of a 304 sheet per sq ft?

A 1 mm 304 sheet runs about 0.74 kg/sq ft. Multiply by thickness to get other gauges; a 2 mm sheet, for instance, comes to roughly 1.49 kg/sq ft. An 8×4 sheet covers 32 sq ft. That means a 1 mm 8×4 sheet lands at around 23.8 kg. Check the per-sq-ft chart above for the rest.

Is 202/201 lighter than 304?

Marginally, yes. 200-series grades run a bit less dense (roughly 7.80 vs 8.00 g/cm³), so a 202 or 201 sheet ends up about 2–3% lighter than a 304 sheet of the same size and thickness.

Are these actual or theoretical weights?

They're nominal, or theoretical, weights worked out from standard densities. Actual weight will differ depending on rolling thickness tolerance under ASTM A240 / IS 6911, so check the exact figure against the mill test certificate or a weighbridge.

How do I get weight from gauge?

Convert the gauge number to a millimetre thickness first (16 gauge, for instance, comes out to roughly 1.588 mm), then check the master chart for the weight. The full gauge-to-mm table sits in the SS sheet sizes & gauge chart.

How is chequered plate weight different?

Chequered plate carries its flat-sheet base weight plus a raised-pattern allowance. That means it's always heavier than a plain sheet of the same base thickness. The exact uplift varies by pattern and mill, so confirm it on the RFQ or against the MTC.

Can I download the chart?

Yes. The chart's published under CC BY 4.0, and you can request a CSV of all the tables through the RFQ form. The HTML tables are copy- and print-ready, so there's no need for a PDF download. Please cite Relinox Stainless.

Where do I get the price once I know the kg?

See the indicative ₹/kg guide on the SS sheet price list, then send an RFQ for today's confirmed rate. This page doesn't print prices.

Do you supply cut-to-size or custom sheets?

Cutting and shearing job-work is available, yes. Any size within the stocked range can be cut to spec, just send your size, thickness, grade and finish via the RFQ form for a cut-to-size quote.

Do you provide a mill test certificate?

As a Jindal Stainless MoU partner, Relinox supplies genuine JSL material, and every shipment comes with a mill test certificate (MTC) documenting the heat analysis and mechanical results. That certificate goes out with the dispatch.
