SS 202 Stainless Steel: Chemical Composition, Properties & Sheet Supply (Jindal Stainless)

SS 202 sits in the austenitic 200-series family of chrome manganese (Cr-Mn) stainless steels (UNS S20200, EN 1.4373), where manganese and nitrogen stand in for part of the nickel. That trade-off makes it a cheaper, low-nickel option next to 304 for indoor, decorative and light-duty work. Chromium runs 17-19%, nickel just 4-6%. Grade 202 stainless steel costs less than 304, but its corrosion resistance falls off somewhat, so it's suited to dry indoor settings only: utensils, kitchen equipment, furniture, railings, decorative panels. Coastal or wet chloride environments are a different story, and 202 isn't built for them. Below you'll find the full ss 202 chemical composition, along with physical and mechanical data, corrosion and magnetic behaviour, and sourcing details for genuine Jindal 202.

Relinox Stainless is an MoU partner of Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. That's JSL stainless. Not Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which deal in carbon steel and pipes, and not SAIL Salem either. What we supply is genuine JSL-melted Jindal SS 202 flat product, mill test certificates included, shipped from Delhi across the country. This isn't re-rolled bazaar "200-series" stock of unknown composition.

By the Relinox Technical Team, Jindal Stainless MoU Partner, headquartered at Ajmeri Gate, one of Delhi's leading stainless steel markets.

Price anchor: SS 202 CR 2B sheet trades in an indicative Delhi band of ₹135–180/kg by thickness, dated tables on the SS 202 price page. Indicative Delhi market ranges, reviewed October 2026, rates move daily with nickel; confirm today's exact rate on RFQ.

What is SS 202 stainless steel?

What is SS 202? It's a mainstream 200 series stainless steel, an austenitic chrome manganese (cr-mn) stainless in which manganese (7.5–10%) and nitrogen (up to 0.25%) stand in for part of the nickel used in the 300-series. Nickel is the most expensive alloying element, so this 202 low nickel stainless chemistry cuts cost and price volatility. It still keeps the austenitic structure, meaning largely non-magnetic and formable. You'll see it written as ss 202, 202 ss, type 202, aisi 202, uns s20200 or 1.4373. It's a 200-series grade, sitting just above 201 and below 304 in the stainless family.

So what is 202 stainless steel in practice? It's a value austenitic grade. It offers good formability and a bright finish suited to indoor and decorative work. Chromium and nickel content run lower than in 304, though, so the corrosion envelope is tighter. Its place in the family runs like this: stainless, then austenitic, then 200-series (Cr-Mn), then 202, one step below the 300-series benchmark. Full designations, composition and properties follow.

Designations & equivalents (UNS S20200 / EN 1.4373)

The standard designations, searched as uns s20200, 1.4373 or the IS 6911 200-series Cr-Mn designation, are set out below. Its nearest 202 stainless steel equivalent grade peers are the other Cr-Mn 200-series grades (201, 204Cu, J4) and, as the Cr-Ni benchmark above it, 304.

SS 202 chemical composition

The 202 stainless steel composition below uses the standard published limits per ASTM A240 (mirrored by IS 6911) for UNS S20200, see the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard. The defining features of the ss 202 composition percentage are high manganese and nitrogen with reduced nickel: this is the cr mn ni content balance that lets 202 undercut 304 on cost while holding an austenitic structure.

Against 304 (8–10.5% Ni, ~18–20% Cr), 202 swaps out nickel for manganese and nitrogen. Against 201, it carries more manganese and more nickel. The actual heat analysis gets confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC) that ships with the material, as produced by Jindal Stainless.

SS 202 physical & mechanical properties

Physical properties (density)

The 202 stainless steel density sits close to that of other austenitics. The figures below are standard published values for the 200-series Cr-Mn family, drawn from JSL published data.

Physical propertyValue
Density≈ 7.8–7.9 g/cm³ (≈ 7,800–7,900 kg/m³)
StructureAustenitic (Cr-Mn, nitrogen-strengthened)
Magnetic response (annealed)Essentially non-magnetic
Work-hardening rateHigher than 304

For 202 stainless steel density g/cm3 or kg/m3 figures used in weight-per-sheet maths, check the SS sheet weight chart and the stainless steel weight calculator.

Mechanical properties (annealed)

The 202 stainless steel yield and tensile strength MPa below are the annealed minimums per ASTM A240. Because of nitrogen strengthening, annealed 202 shows a higher yield than annealed 304, and its higher work-hardening rate raises strength further during forming. The 202 stainless steel hardness HB / HRB maximum is also listed.

Property (annealed, per ASTM A240)Value
Tensile strength, min515 MPa
Yield strength (0.2% proof), min275 MPa
Elongation, min40%
Hardness, max241 HB / 100 HRB

Corrosion resistance & magnetic behaviour

On 202 corrosion resistance, the honest answer to "does 202 stainless steel rust" is: it resists dry, indoor and mildly humid atmospheres well, but with lower chromium and nickel than 304 it has a narrower corrosion envelope. Keep 202 out of coastal, chloride, marine or wet aggressive service, there, step up to 304 or 316. Used indoors and kept dry, 202 gives a clean, bright stainless surface for years.

Is SS 202 magnetic? In its annealed state, 202 is basically non-magnetic, same as other austenitics. That said, 202 stainless steel magnetic response shows up more easily than in 304 once the metal's been cold worked, bending, deep drawing, roll-forming, because the Cr-Mn austenite isn't as stable. A slight magnetic pull on a formed 202 part is normal. It doesn't mean the steel is "fake."

On food contact: 202 shows up constantly in utensils and indoor kitchenware, so the "is ss 202 food grade" and "safe for utensils" question generally gets a yes for dry or indoor cookware and serving items. Wet food-processing, dairy work, or coastal duty is another matter; there, 304 remains the preferred food-contact grade. See food-grade stainless steel for the full guidance.

SS 202 vs related grades (quick guide)

Short head-to-head blocks below; deeper comparisons live on the sibling pages.

  • ss 202 vs 304, the question of 202 or 304 which is better really comes down to where the metal will live: 202 is cheaper (it uses less nickel) and suits indoor settings just fine, while 304 handles corrosion and holds up better under bending, so it's the pick for wet conditions, outdoor exposure, or food processing. Full breakdown here: SS 202 vs 304 guide.
  • ss 202 vs 201, as for the difference 201 and 202, 202 usually packs more manganese and nickel than 201. That gives it a slight edge in formability and resistance to corrosion. See SS 201 and the SS 201 vs 304 guide for more.
  • ss 202 vs 204cu, 204Cu throws copper into the mix, which makes deep-drawing easier. Think utensil bodies. Details at SS 204Cu.
  • 202 vs j4, Jindal's J4 is a budget 200-series grade built with utensils in mind. Check out Jindal J4 and the broader Jindal J-series for context.

Frequently asked questions

What is SS 202 stainless steel?

SS 202 belongs to the austenitic 200-series family of chromium-manganese stainless steels, designated UNS S20200 / EN 1.4373. Manganese and nitrogen stand in for part of the nickel content here, which makes it a cheaper, low-nickel option compared with 304 for indoor and decorative applications.

What is the chemical composition of SS 202?

Per ASTM A240, the standard limits run C at 0.15% max, Mn between 7.5 and 10.0%, Cr from 17 to 19%, Ni at 4.0 to 6.0%, N capped at 0.25%, Si no higher than 1.0%, P at 0.060% max, and S at 0.030% max, with iron making up the rest. You'll find the actual heat analysis confirmed on the mill test certificate.

How is 202 different from 304?

202 has less nickel (4–6% vs 8–10.5%) and leans more on manganese and nitrogen instead. That keeps costs down, but corrosion resistance and ductility both take a moderate hit compared to 304. For the full comparison, see the SS 202 vs 304 guide.

What is the difference between 201 and 202?

Both belong to the Cr-Mn 200-series family. 202 generally runs higher in manganese and nickel than 201, which gives it a bit of an edge in formability and corrosion resistance. See the SS 201 page.

What is the density of SS 202?

About 7.8–7.9 g/cm³, or roughly 7,850 kg/m³. That puts it near other austenitic stainless grades. For weight-per-sheet figures, check the weight chart or calculator.

What is the yield and tensile strength of 202?

Under ASTM A240, in the annealed condition, yield strength must reach at least 275 MPa, tensile strength at least 515 MPa, and elongation at least 40%. Nitrogen strengthening pushes annealed 202 to a higher yield than annealed 304.

Is SS 202 magnetic?

Non-magnetic when annealed, essentially. But cold work it, bending or deep drawing, and it picks up magnetism faster than 304 does. So a formed 202 part with a slight magnetic pull? That's normal.

Does 202 stainless steel rust?

It resists dry, indoor atmospheres, but it doesn't hold up against corrosion as well as 304 does. Skip it for coastal, chloride or wet aggressive service; use 304 or 316 there instead.

Is 202 food grade or safe for utensils?

It's widely used for utensils and indoor kitchenware, making it a good fit for dry, indoor cookware and serving items. For wet food-processing, dairy or coastal use, though, 304 is the preferred food-contact grade.

Do you supply genuine Jindal 202 with MTC?

As a Jindal Stainless MoU-partner channel, we supply genuine JSL-melted 202, not the unknown-composition bazaar "200-series" stock you'll find elsewhere. Every batch ships with a mill test certificate confirming conformance to ASTM A240 / IS 6911. Request a copy against your indent.

What is the price of SS 202 per kg?

Stainless rates shift every day, so we post a dated indicative price list instead of quoting a fixed figure here. 202 usually runs below 304 given its lower nickel content. Check the SS 202 indicative price list, or send your requirement through the RFQ form to confirm today's rate.

What forms and sizes is Jindal 202 available in?

Sheet, coil, patta/patti, circle and chequered on genuine Jindal base, available in standard Indian sizes like 1250×2500 (4×8), 1250×3050 (4×10) and 1500×3000 (5×10) mm. The exact stocked thickness range gets confirmed on request against your indent.
