SS 409 & 409M Stainless Steel Sheet: Composition, Properties & Supply (India)
409 stainless steel is a ferritic, titanium-stabilised grade with about 11% chromium and very low carbon (type 409, UNS S40900). It's a cost-effective "utility" stainless with good high-temperature oxidation resistance, used mainly for automotive and railway exhaust systems, silencers and catalytic converters. 409M is the manganese-modified Indian variant of 409: roughly 11% chromium, but with higher manganese and titanium/niobium stabilisation, developed for the extra formability that bus bodies, rail coaches and containers demand. This page lays out the full composition, mechanical and physical data for 409 stainless steel and 409M side by side, along with corrosion limits, forms such as HR coil, finishes and how to buy genuine Jindal material.
Relinox Stainless holds an MoU with Jindal Stainless (JSL), India's largest producer of stainless flat products. It isn't Jindal SAW, JSW Steel or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), which work in carbon steel and pipes, and it's not SAIL Salem either. Both 409 and 409M sit in the core verified-Jindal grade set. We supply genuine JSL-melted jindal 409 stainless steel sheet and coil, mill test certificates included.

What is 409 stainless steel?
409 stainless steel, sometimes written as type 409, 409 SS, or 409 stainless steel, sits at the entry level of the ferritic family. It carries around 11% chromium, just enough to earn the "stainless" label, and keeps carbon low. A titanium stabilisation addition ties up carbon and nitrogen, which lets the grade weld well and resist sensitisation. That combination makes it far cheaper than nickel-bearing 304, yet it still shrugs off high-temperature oxidation and mild atmospheric corrosion in exhaust and hot-gas service. Silencers, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter shells and heat exchangers are typical 409 stainless steel uses. Anywhere 304 would be overkill, 409 tends to show up instead.
409M (also written "ss 409m", "ss 409m sheet", "409 modified", "409 M" or "409 M sheet") takes 409 and modifies it with manganese, stabilised with titanium and/or niobium. The tuning targets deep-draw and roll-forming work, the kind vehicle bodywork demands. In the Indian market, it's the standard bus body grade stainless and rail-coach sheet. Full designations, composition, properties and a 409-vs-409M decision table follow below.
Designations & equivalents (409 UNS S40900 / AISI 409)
Below you'll find the standard designations, searched as 409 uns, 409 s40900 or 409 aisi. 409M is a proprietary manganese-modified variant. Its exact UNS and heat analysis get confirmed on the mill test certificate, and Jindal Stainless publishes the same data on request.

409 vs 409M: quick difference
409 vs 409m, sometimes written as the difference between 409 and 409m, comes down to formability. Plain 409 is the exhaust and high-temperature grade. 409M adds manganese and extra stabilisation to gain the drawability and roll-forming behaviour that structural bodywork sheet needs, which is why it dominates bus-body and rail-coach fabrication in India. Both grades are ferritic, magnetic and around 11% chromium.
| Attribute | SS 409 | SS 409M |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | Titanium-stabilised 11% Cr ferritic | Manganese-modified 409, Ti/Nb-stabilised |
| Optimised for | High-temperature oxidation, weldability | Formability, deep-draw & roll-forming |
| Typical use | Exhaust, silencer, catalytic converter, heat exchanger | Bus bodies, rail coaches, containers, exhaust |

409 & 409M chemical composition
UNS S40900 sits at the heart of the 409 stainless steel composition shown below, which follows the standard published limits per ASTM A240 for type 409, check the ASTM A240 standard and IS 6911 standard for the full detail. What sets this 409 chemical composition apart is roughly 11% chromium paired with titanium stabilisation (Ti ≥ 6×C). That combination locks up carbon, so the grade stays weldable and holds up against intergranular attack.
| Element | 409, Min % | 409, Max % |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | — | 0.08 |
| Manganese (Mn) | — | 1.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | — | 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | — | 0.045 |
| Sulphur (S) | — | 0.045 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 10.50 | 11.75 |
| Nickel (Ni) | — | 0.50 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 6×(C), stabilised | 0.75 |
On 409M composition and 409M chemical composition: 409M is Jindal Stainless's proprietary manganese-modified version of 409, sitting at roughly 11% chromium with higher manganese than plain 409 and a titanium/niobium stabilisation package, according to Jindal's published data. We don't print a made-up heat analysis for 409M. No guesswork. The real 409M chemical composition is confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC) that ships with the material, and we're happy to share it against your indent. Newer dual-stabilised 409 grades, S40920 and S40930, bring niobium in alongside titanium for even better weld and forming behaviour.
409 mechanical & physical properties
The 409 stainless steel properties listed below reflect the annealed-condition minimums that ASTM A240 sets for type 409 sheet, strip and plate. Tensile, yield, elongation, hardness: these mechanical properties 409 figures are what you write into your indent. 409M measures up well against them, though you should confirm the exact values on its own MTC.
| Property (annealed 409, per ASTM A240) | Value | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | ≥ 380 | MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% proof), min | ≥ 205 | MPa |
| Elongation, min | ≥ 20 | % |
| Hardness, max | ≤ 88 | HRB |
For 409 density, 409 melting point and 409 hardness as physical constants, and the common 409 magnetic / is 409 stainless magnetic question, check the physical table. 409 is ferritic, so it's magnetic, and its low thermal expansion helps in thermal-cycling exhaust and heat-exchanger work. That holds for 409M too.
| Physical property | 409 / 409M value |
|---|---|
| Density | ≈ 7.75 g/cm³ |
| Melting range | ≈ 1450–1510 °C |
| Magnetic response | Yes, ferritic, ferromagnetic |
| Thermal expansion | Low (ferritic), suits thermal cycling |
409 corrosion & heat resistance: and where NOT to use it
On 409 corrosion resistance, let's be realistic: with only about 11% chromium and no molybdenum or nickel, 409 is built for mild atmospheric corrosion and, above all, high-temperature oxidation resistance, not for aggressive service. It performs superbly in hot exhaust gas and dry heat. That's why it owns the silencer and catalytic-converter market. On the common 409 rust question: an uncoated 409 surface can develop light surface staining, or "tea-staining," in humid or wet conditions, more than 304 does, since its chromium content sits at the bottom of the stainless range. It isn't for marine, coastal, chloride or aggressive-chemical exposure.
Because both grades are ferritic, they also resist chloride stress-corrosion cracking better than austenitics, but that's not a license to use them in wet chloride.
If you need genuine wet-corrosion or food/marine performance, step up to austenitic grades: see SS 304 and SS 316. Pick 409 / 409M when the duty is high-temperature oxidation, dry structural bodywork, or cost-driven mild-corrosion work, and 304 would be overkill.
Forms, finishes, thickness & sizes
We supply 409 stainless steel sheet (also 409 ss sheet, or 409 chadar as it's called in the trade), along with 409 coil, 409M coil, and 409 patta / 409 patti / 409 strip, all on genuine Jindal base. For more, see the stainless steel sheets pillar, stainless steel coils, and SS patta / strips pages. Standard Indian market sizes apply here, including the 8x4 409 sheet (1250×2500 409, sometimes written 4x8 409). As for 409 finish options, ferritic 409 is normally stocked as 409 No.1 (hot-rolled, annealed and pickled, in other words 409 HR) and 409 2B (cold-rolled). Both suit exhaust and bodywork duty.
| Form | Finish | Standard size (mm / ft) | Thickness (mm + gauge) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | No.1 (HR), 2B (CR), 2D | 1250×2500 (8×4) | Confirmed on request / against indent |
| Sheet | No.1 (HR), 2B (CR) | 1250×3050 (4×10) | Confirmed on request / against indent |
| Sheet / coil | No.1 (HR), 2B (CR) | 1500×3000 (5×10) | Confirmed on request / against indent |
| Coil / patta / strip | No.1 / 2B | Slit to width | Confirmed on request / against indent |
On 409 thickness, 409 gauge and 409 mm ranges: standard market stock runs roughly 0.3–12 mm+, with the exact stocked range confirmed against your indent. For 409 weight and 409 sheet weight kg per size and thickness, use the SS sheet weight chart and the stainless steel weight calculator; for the full size/gauge reference see the sheet sizes & thickness chart. Cutting and shearing job-work can be arranged to cut-to-size.
Applications of 409 & 409M
Grade 409 exhaust systems and 409M earn their place wherever heat, cost and formability meet. As the 409 exhaust grade / 409 silencer sheet, plain 409 handles the oxidising heat of vehicle exhaust. 409M, marketed as the 409m bus body sheet, brings the drawability that structural bodywork needs.
- Automotive & railway exhaust, silencers, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter shells, heat exchangers → automotive & railway
- Bus bodies & transport, bus body panels, rail-coach sheet, ISO containers → bus body & transport
- General fabrication, brackets, hot-gas ducting and structural sheet where mild corrosion is acceptable → fabrication & engineering
Nearby & alternative grades
Because no dedicated comparison guide exists for these ferritics, the questions of 409 vs 410 and 409 vs 430 get answered right here. 409 is Ti-stabilised for weldability and high-temperature exhaust duty. 410, by contrast, is a martensitic grade that can be hardened by heat treatment, which suits cutlery, valves, and fasteners. 430 is a general-purpose ferritic with higher chromium (~16–18%), giving it better appearance and mild corrosion resistance for trim and appliances.
| Grade | Type | Cr % | Key use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 409 / 409M | Ferritic (stabilised) | ~11 | Exhaust, silencer, bus body, rail coach |
| 410 | Martensitic (hardenable) | ~11.5–13.5 | Cutlery, valves, fasteners, wear parts |
| 430 | Ferritic (general) | ~16–18 | Appliance trim, utensils, decorative |

409 & 409M price & today's rate
We don't quote a fixed number here, since stainless prices shift daily. 409 and 409M carry almost no nickel and very little chromium next to the austenitic grades, so their 409 sheet price usually sits well below 304. Still, the final figure depends on thickness, finish, quantity and freight. For an indicative 409 rate today, 409 price per kg, 409m price, 409m stainless steel price or 409m rate, check the dated indicative price list, or send your requirement through the RFQ form to confirm the current ss 409 sheet price for your grade, size and quantity. There's no fixed 409 price list here, by design. Rates are confirmed on RFQ, so you always work with a live figure.
| Price factor | Effect on 409 / 409M rate |
|---|---|
| Alloy content | Low Cr, near-zero Ni, cheaper than 304/316 |
| Thickness & gauge | Thinner cold-rolled sheet costs more per kg to process |
| Finish | 2B (CR) typically above No.1 (HR) |
| Quantity | Full-coil / bulk indents priced keener than part-sheets |
| Freight | Delivered rate varies by destination from Delhi |

Frequently asked questions
What is 409 stainless steel?
409 is a ferritic stainless steel with roughly 11% chromium and low carbon content, stabilised with titanium so it welds well (type 409, UNS S40900). It costs less than many alternatives and holds up well against oxidation at high temperatures. That combination is exactly why manufacturers reach for it in exhaust systems, silencers and catalytic converters.
What is 409M and how is it different from 409?
409M is a manganese-modified version of 409, stabilised with titanium and/or niobium for extra formability. It's the standard grade for bus bodies and rail coaches in India, where deep-draw and roll-forming performance matters. Plain 409, by contrast, is the exhaust and high-temperature grade.
Is 409 / 409M stainless steel magnetic?
Both are ferritic stainless steels, so they're magnetic (ferromagnetic). That sets them apart from the essentially non-magnetic austenitic grades like 304 and 316.
Does 409 stainless steel rust?
409 resists high-temperature oxidation and mild atmospheric corrosion well. With only ~11% chromium, though, it can show light surface staining in wet or humid conditions, and it just isn't suited to marine, coastal or aggressive-chemical exposure. For those, go with 304 or 316.
What is 409 stainless steel used for?
Automotive and railway exhaust systems, silencers, catalytic converter shells and heat exchangers all rely on this material. 409M, meanwhile, goes into bus bodies, rail coaches and ISO containers.
What standard does Jindal 409 / 409M conform to?
Jindal Stainless supplies it to meet ASTM A240 / A240M and IS 6911, and a mill test certificate confirms the heat analysis and mechanical results.
What is the price of 409 / 409M sheet per kg?
Stainless prices shift daily, so instead of quoting a fixed number here we publish an indicative dated price list. 409 and 409M generally run cheaper than 304, since they carry almost no nickel. Check the indicative price list, or send your requirement through the RFQ form to confirm today's rate for your size and quantity.
What thicknesses and sizes of 409 are available?
Patta and coil sizes typically run about 0.3-12 mm+ across 8x4 (1250×2500), 4x10 (1250×3050) and 5x10 (1500×3000) mm sheets. Ask us to confirm the exact stocked range against your indent.
Do you supply genuine Jindal 409 / 409M?
Relinox partners with Jindal Stainless under an MoU, which means the 409 and 409M material you get is genuinely JSL-melted, backed by mill test certificates. It's not re-rolled bazaar stock. Jindal quality, documented and traceable.
Can I get 409 / 409M cut to size, or as coil or patta?
Yes. We can supply cut-to-size, coil, and patta / strip forms, all on genuine Jindal base. Just send your sizes through the RFQ form.
What is the HSN code / GST for 409 sheet?
409 flat products fall under the same stainless steel sheet classification as the other HSN codes. Check the SS HSN codes & GST reference for the current code and rate. We raise GST-compliant invoices for these transactions.
How is 409 different from 410 or 430?
409 is a titanium-stabilised ferritic grade, optimised for weldability and suited to exhaust duty. 410, by contrast, is martensitic; heat treatment can harden it. As for 430, that's a general-purpose ferritic carrying higher chromium, which gives it a better appearance and mild corrosion resistance. Check the nearby-grade table above for more.
