Stainless Steel Grades Chart: Full Jindal Grade Library (India)
Stainless steel grades fall into families by composition: austenitic (300 and 200 series), ferritic and martensitic (400 series), and duplex. Each grade carries an AISI/type number (304, 316, 202…), a UNS designation (S30400, S31600…), an EN/DIN number (1.4301, 1.4401…) and an IS 6911 name. The 200-series economy line also gets Jindal trade names, things like J4, J1 and J2/JT.

This is the complete stainless steel grades chart for the flat-product grades Relinox Stainless supplies as a Jindal Stainless MoU partner. It's one HTML-native grade chart covering composition family, magnetic response, corrosion class, cost tier and best use, and every grade gets its own dedicated page.
Jindal Stainless (JSL) flat products are what this chart covers, and nothing else, not Jindal SAW, not Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), not JSW (carbon steel and pipes), and not SAIL Salem stainless. Relinox is an authorized channel carrying the full Jindal grade range with mill test certificates. So if you're asking who supplies all stainless steel grades in India, that's the answer: genuine JSL-melted material, not re-rolled bazaar stock. For a rate on any grade, send your requirement via the RFQ form, or check today's indicative price list.

The grades on the verify list, namely 317L, 304H, 321H, 301LN and 444, aren't kept as routine stock. They're supplied against indent or on request instead. Check the RFQ form for the current grade, gauge and lead time before placing an order. Grades like 904L and 17-4PH sit outside Jindal's flat-product range, so they aren't offered.
Grade families explained (types of stainless steel)
Stainless steel breaks down into four metallurgical types, and that's where "ss types" and "grades of stainless steel" come into focus. The 200 series, 300 series and 400 series grades are the everyday shorthand; the fuller list of austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and duplex grades is set out below. The family summary table gives the key alloying, magnetic and corrosion signature and typical price tier for each grade, a compact stainless steel grades comparison you can use to compare ss grades at a family level before drilling into a grade page.
| Family | Series / examples | Key alloying | Magnetic | Corrosion | Typical price tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Austenitic (300) | 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 310S | Cr-Ni | No (annealed) | High to very high | Medium-high | Food, marine, chemical, general |
| Austenitic (200 / Cr-Mn) | 201, 202, 204Cu, J4, J1, J2/JT | Cr-Mn (low-nickel) | Slight / variable | Medium | Low | Economy indoor, decorative, utensils |
| Ferritic (400) | 409, 430, 439, 441, 436 | Cr (low/no nickel) | Yes | Medium to medium-high | Low | Auto, appliance, magnetic economy |
| Martensitic (400) | 410, 410S, 420 | Cr (hardenable) | Yes | Medium | Low-medium | Cutlery, wear, hardened parts |
| Duplex | 2205 | Cr-Ni-Mo, dual-phase | Yes | Very high | High | High-strength corrosive / structural |
Austenitic 300-series (304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 310S)
The 300-series covers the Cr-Ni austenitic family: essentially non-magnetic when annealed, and the most corrosion-resistant and weldable of the bunch. SS 304 and SS 304L do the heavy lifting for general and food-grade work. SS 316, SS 316L and SS 316Ti bring molybdenum into the mix for marine and chemical service. SS 321 and SS 310S are built for high heat. And SS 301 / 301LN? That's the higher-strength structural grade.
Austenitic 200-series & Jindal J-series (201, 202, 204Cu, J4)
Jindal makes 201 in the 200-series, the Cr-Mn low-nickel economy austenitic family that represents India's cost play, where manganese, copper and nitrogen stand in for most of the nickel. Look at SS 201, SS 202 and SS 204Cu. Jindal also runs its own proprietary economy line: Jindal J4 and the broader Jindal J-series (J1, J2/JT, JSLU). These are the Jindal J series trade names. They stand apart from the standardized 200-series grades.
Ferritic 400-series (430, 439, 441, 436, 409)
The ferritic 400-series is magnetic, has little or no nickel in it, and gives you good value with decent corrosion resistance. SS 430 is the classic grade for appliances and trim. SS 439, 441 and 436 are the stabilised grades used in automotive and heat-exchanger work. Exhaust and transport applications rely on SS 409 / 409M.
Martensitic (410, 420)
Martensitic grades are magnetic and can be hardened through heat treatment, so they're the ones you reach for when hardness and wear resistance matter most: cutlery, blades, wear parts. Take a look at SS 410 / 410S and SS 420.
Duplex (2205)
Duplex 2205 combines a ferritic-austenitic structure, and that dual makeup gives it roughly double the strength of 304 along with very high resistance to chloride corrosion. Chemical plants rely on it. So do structural and high-pressure applications. See Duplex 2205.
How to choose the right grade (which SS grade for your use)
Patti; patta; 202; 304; kaunsa grade lena chahiye; kitchen; outdoor; marine; grade wise ss sheet, none of these are the whole story, because the right answer depends on where the steel lives and what the buyer wants to spend. Ask a dozen fabricators which is the best stainless steel grade and you'll get a dozen answers, most of them wrong for at least one job. The guide below cuts through that: use-case, recommended grade or grades, the reasoning, and where to find the page.
It's written in plain language on purpose. Buyers keep asking about the 304 202 grade difference and whether 304 grade quality justifies the price, especially when they're weighing patta grade against patti kaunsa grade. Those questions get answered here too.
| Application | Recommended grade(s) | Why | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen equipment & food contact | 304 (316 if wet/salty) | Food-safe, corrosion-resistant, weldable | Kitchen equipment |
| Outdoor / architectural cladding | 304 (316 in polluted/coastal) | Weather resistance with good finish | Wall cladding & interiors |
| Marine / coastal / chloride | 316, 316L, duplex 2205 | Molybdenum resists chloride pitting | SS 316 |
| Chemical / pharma / dairy | 316L, 317L, duplex 2205 | Low carbon + Mo for aggressive media | SS 316L |
| Utensils & cookware | 204Cu, J4, 202 | Deep-draw economy Cr-Mn grades | Jindal J4 |
| Budget interior / decorative | 202, 201, 430 | Lowest cost for dry indoor duty | SS 202 |
| Elevators & lifts (finish panels) | 304 with hairline / mirror finish | Durable, finishes well | Elevators & lifts |
| Bus body / transport panels | 409M, 304 | Formable, corrosion-resistant panels | Bus body & transport |
| Structural / high strength | Duplex 2205, 301/301LN | High strength with corrosion resistance | Duplex 2205 |
On the common cost-and-corrosion trade-off: 304 carries more nickel than 202, so it holds up better against corrosion. 316 adds molybdenum on top of that, giving it the best corrosion resistance among the mainstream grades. As for the food grade stainless steel grade and medical grade ss questions, 304 is the standard food-contact grade, and 316 is the step up when you need more resistance, see food-grade stainless steel. For head-to-head detail, check 304 vs 316, 202 vs 304, 201 vs 304, 304 vs 430, J4 vs 304 and duplex 2205 vs 316L.
On magnetism, ss grade magnetic or not, or which ss grade is magnetic, 300-series austenitic is essentially non-magnetic when annealed, 200-series is slightly/variably magnetic, and 400-series ferritic and martensitic grades (430, 410, 420, 409) are magnetic; a magnet test alone does not prove or disprove a grade, so see how to identify real SS 304. On the extremes, the highest corrosion resistant ss grade and most corrosion resistant ss grade among the mainstream range is 316/duplex 2205, while the strongest ss grade here is duplex 2205.

Frequently asked questions
What are the different grades of stainless steel?
Grades split into four families. Austenitic covers the Cr-Ni 300 series and the Cr-Mn 200 series. Ferritic and martensitic share the 400 series. Duplex stands on its own. Relinox carries the complete Jindal flat-product range: 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 321, 310S, 301/301LN, 201, 202, 204Cu, the Jindal J-series (J4, J1, J2/JT), 409/409M, 410, 420, 430, 439/441/436, and duplex 2205. A handful of grades aren't part of the standard range: 317L, 304H, 321H and 444, available only against indent.
Which stainless steel grade is best?
There's no single best grade, it depends on the use. Pick 304 for general and food work, 316 for marine and chemical settings, 202 or Jindal J4 if you're after budget interior parts and utensils, 430 for magnetic economy panels, and duplex 2205 when you need high-strength corrosive service. Check the selector table to match it to your application.
Which SS grades are magnetic?
Anneal a 300-series austenitic grade and it's essentially non-magnetic. The 200-series behaves differently: slightly magnetic, and the degree varies from batch to batch. Ferritic and martensitic 400-series grades, including 430, 410, 420, and 409, are magnetic outright, and so is duplex 2205. A magnet won't tell you which grade you're holding, though. Check the mill test certificate to be sure.
What is the difference between 304 and 202 or 316?
304 has more nickel than 202, which gives it better corrosion resistance. 316 goes a step further, adding molybdenum, and delivers the best corrosion resistance among the mainstream grades. See the full comparisons for 202 vs 304 and 304 vs 316.
What grades does Jindal make?
Jindal Stainless rolls the full flat-product range, the austenitic 300 and 200 series, the ferritic and martensitic 400 series, its own J-series economy grades, and duplex 2205. Relinox carries this complete range as an authorized MoU partner and provides mill test certificates with every order.
Which grade for kitchen, outdoor, marine or utensils?
Jindal uses 304 for kitchens and general outdoor work, stepping up to 316 when there's coastal, salty or chemical exposure. For cost-sensitive utensils and cookware, go with 204Cu, Jindal J4 or 202. The grade selector table lists each use-case alongside its recommended grade and page.
What is the cheapest stainless steel grade?
Jindal J-series steels (J4, J1, J2/JT) count as economy grades, right alongside the 200-series Cr-Mn types, 201 and 202. The 400-series ferritics, 430 included, also come in cheaper, mostly because they carry little or no nickel. Check the price list for an indicative rate; no rupee figure appears here.
Are 317L, 304H, 321H, 301LN and 444 available?
Yes, these grades are available against indent or on request, checked against the current Jindal catalogue, rather than kept as routine stock. Send us the grade, size and quantity on the RFQ form to confirm availability and lead time.
Is this Jindal Stainless, not Jindal pipes, JSW or JSPL?
Relinox does hold an MoU with Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL), but only for stainless flat products. That's a distinct relationship from Jindal SAW, JSW Steel, or Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL), those companies deal in carbon steel and pipes. It also has nothing to do with SAIL Salem stainless.
Do you deliver grades pan-India and supply mill test certificates?
Yes, we ship pan-India from our Ajmeri Gate, Delhi stock point, and genuine Jindal-melted material comes with a mill test certificate confirming it meets the applicable standard, as produced by Jindal Stainless. Request a sample copy against your indent.
Can I get dealer or stockist pricing on a full grade range?
Yes, resellers and sub-dealers can raise a dealer pricing enquiry that covers a full grade range through the RFQ form. Just send your requirement and delivery location to receive a quote.
